Black Entertainment Television will be adding another awards show to their fall season when they broadcast “The 2003 Source Hip-Hop Music Awards” later this year. Switching from the UPN network to BET, the Source awards show helped produce some of the highest ratings for the network during the 2000-2001 season. One of the things that have made the show so popular is unrehearsed mayhem that has been known to plague the show.
Dating back to the first Source awards show when Tupac made an unscheduled performance during a Tribe Called Quest’s acceptance speech, to 1995 when Suge Knight and his artists taking verbal jabs at P.Diddy and the entire east coast. As well as the recent 2000 awards show being stopped due to excessive fights amongst guests and artists. During that awards show only three awards were presented on television and the entire show had to be re-taped which resulted in a huge monetary loss. Throughout all the past drama, BET is taking the initiative to broadcast the show and happily accept The Source to their network.
BET president Debra Lee said, “BET is very pleased to televise the 2003 Source Awards.” Founder of the Source, Dave Mays said, “This year’s Awards will feature the artists and music that make Hip-Hop the most vital force for today’s youth. We’re proud to partner with BET, a network with a strong commitment to hip-hop, for what will be Hip-Hop’s biggest event ever.” The 2003 Awards show will be in Miami on October 13th during a planned weekend of events including a concert, dinner and gala. The show will air on November 4th at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available a Ticketmaster for the event.
