After celebrating bringing up-to-date hip-hop news and events to the public for 15 years, CNN.com sat down with David Mays to figure out the secret behind his success. In the article “Deconstructing Hip-Hop from It’s Source”, CNN.com gives its internet readers a chance to truly understand the deep impact The Source Magazine has made on hip-hop’s history.
>From its start as a Xeroxed piece of paper for local radio listeners to
>its
current 9 million-reader base, The Source has brought more than its fair share of artists to the top of the charts. ” On the idea of being and entrepreneur in hip-hop, David Mays told CNN.com, ” That’s one of the essences of hip-hop culture—entreprenurialism. It’s one of hip-hop’s greatest accomplishments? That’s one of many things I like to hold up to people who tend to look down on hip-hop as being the negative music and movement. You have an entire generation of young kids who are starting their own businesses. There’s really no limit to it”.
Being a part of the media, Mays said what bothers him most about the media coverage of hip-hop is the false stereotypes. ” They consistently promote all kinds of negative and false stereotypes about it. It’s kind of like a vicious cycle. The media continues to fuel these inaccurate, negative perceptions”. Looking towards the future of hip-hop, he said, ‘The music is
constantly evolving and going through different cycles, trends and
directions. I think its heading back to more socially conscious
perspectives and points in the music”.
