Speaking on the current state of wellness in hip-hop, Heal Thyself Productions is introducing the first documentary on health in hip-hop. “Wholistic Wellness for the Hip-Hop Generation” is a 110- minute documentary produced by Queen Afua featuring Erykah Badu, Common, Stic of the group Dead Prez and many others who are hoping to pass on their everyday methods of eating as well as healthy living.
With Wholistic wellness, the focus is on cleansing the mind, body and spirit to maintain a “healthier and active” life. In the documentary Common says, “I think and speak clearer since I cut the dairy out. I can breathe better and perform at a better rate, and my voice is clearer. I can explore different things with my voice that I couldn’t do because of my meat and dairy ingestion. I am proud and blessed to be a vegetarian, everything became clear.” The film’s purpose in reaching the youth and hip-hop community is to also inform our culture about another natural way to combat the diseases that are attacking our bodies. “Discipline is important, we need to be more focused on what we put into our bodies”, Erykah Badu says in the film. The film uses interviews, testimonials and inspirational words to get its powerful message across.
