Back in 1995, Death Row duo Tha Dogg Pound struck it big on the charts when their independently released debut Dogg Food debuted at number one with 278,000 copies sold. Now, it looks like Mac Miller will be the first indie artist to top the charts since Daz and Kurupt dropped, with Blue Slide Park projected to sell 100,000 copies.
MTV reports that the Pittsburgh-born rapper’s debut album Blue Slide Park, which dropped this past Tuesday via Rostrum Records, is expected to crack the top of the Billboard charts at the number one spot. Rostrum head honcho Benjy Grinberg explained that the label learned a lot of different means to promote music through work ing with Wiz Khalifa, and that Mac reaped the benefits of that experience.
“We’ve learned a lot about the ins and outs of the majors and how different things operate [through working with Wiz Khalifa],” Grinberg says. “We try to apply those lessons to everything we do…I’m not on some sort of revolutionary [anti-major] kick. I just know there are better ways of doing things.”
