Last year, Black Sheep assembled Q-Tip, De La Soul’s Dave and Mike Gee for the cut “Birds of a Feather,” serving as an official Native Tongues reunion. But as far as more music coming from the collective, Dres explains that it’s not as easy as fans would expect to get the crew back together.

“At the end of the day, it’s the fact that we’re all now adults with families and much more responsibilities and even living in different states. A Native Tongue reunion, so to speak, is a little more involved,” he told HipHopSite.com. “But it’s still no excuse. I agree. I think that sometimes, you just gotta bend over backwards to do something that’s worth it. I hope this is the year that finds us doing a lot more work. We’ve all kind of said independently that it’s our intention to, all of us. At this point, I think it’s just a matter of us doing it.”

He also spoke on fellow Tongues members A Tribe Called Quest and the documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest. Having seen the film, Dres thinks it was an honesty portrayal of the group’s dysfunction.

“I liked it. I really did. I’m close to the fellas, so I probably know more than the average cat would ever know,” he said. “But I think it was a fair assessment of what happens sometimes, and what has happened even to myself. Groups kind of grow apart, especially when you’ve grown up with someone. […] Things happen. Relationships sour, dampen, what have you. In my opinion, the thing that makes you family is that you work through that. That’s really where my head is at with the movie is that I love those dudes, and I know they love each other, and regardless of whatever we’ve had to walk through, let’s walk through it.”
