Common was spotted two weeks ago shopping for wedding rings in New York City’s Greenwich Village-Soho District, only three months after proposing to Erykah Badu in Chicago.
Sources say the Grammy-nominated Chicago rapper—who relocated two years ago from his Midwestern hometown’s semi-jaded South Shore area on the South Side to Brooklyn’s boho-fabulous Ft. Greene enclave—stopped during the wee kend in a Zales jewelry store on Houston Street in Manhattan’s west end and looked over some engagement and wedding rings for approximately 5 minutes.
“We asked him if he needed anything, and we showed him around,” said a source with the discount jewelry store’s sales staff, who asked not to be identified. “But he didn’t cop [purchase] anything. He didn’t say much. He kept it real quiet, he wanted to be incognito.”
Common proposed to Badu in February during her concert tour stop with Musiq Soulchild and Talib Kweli at Chicago’s Auditorium downtown in the South Loop. New York City and Chicago sources close to Common’s camp say Badu is pregnant with her child and that the rapper wants to live the rhetoric in his extra-conscious last album, the Like Water For Chocolate LP (MCA), and settle down with the Houston, Texas-based nouveau soul chanteuse as a family man.

The same sources in both towns have reported that Common is getting cold feet about marrying Badu and prefers parenting a child with her out of wedlock. Others sources doubts that Badu is actually with child.
Badu has made several concert appearances with Common, and she appears in the “The Light” video for the single from Like Water. Badu forged a closer association with Common, who parents a girl toddler from another relationship, shortly after breaking up with longtime boyfriend Dre of OutKast.
