Having only released statements via Twitter and press release, Guru’s musical partner Solar has come forward for a live interview this morning. The Brooklyn-based producer who has worked on over three albums with Guru spoke to HOT 97’s morning show with DJ Cipher Sounds and Peter Rosenberg.

Firstly, updating the public on the legendary emcee’s recovery, Solar began in saying. “Basically, Guru’s recovered, from what I released earlier, which is accurate. He had a cardiac arrest, due to complications from, like I said to CNN, due to lung problems that he’d been having for a while now.”

Solar then clarified reports on Guru’s condition from mid-week last week. “He’s not in a medically induced coma,” said the producer. “What he’s doing, he’s deal dealing with is, he’s dealing with the very serious complications of coming out of cardiac arrest.” As Peter Rosenberg inquired further, several times, if Guru was presently in a coma of any kind, Solar deferred to, “I don’t want to go any further [into that, besides] what I’ve reported.”

Rosenberg then began asking Solar about the context of the duo’s relationship. “My relationship with Guru is…we refer to each other as ‘brothers from different mothers.’ We go back, going on now, close to 10 years of friendship,” said Solar. Per previous interviews, the duo began their friendship at the same time that Guru was leaving Gang Starr. Solar continued, comparing his relationship to that of Notorious B.I.G. and Bad Boy Records founder Sean “Diddy” Combs. “Our relationship has gone into to an artist/producer relationship [and] to a label, not unlike what we saw with Biggie and Puff and so on. That’s what it’s been.”

Lastly, Solar addressed the allegations made late last week from Guru’s nephew Justin Elam-Ruff that some of Guru’s blood relatives were denied visitation rights. “That’s completely untrue. It’s been unfortunate that this has been so out of perspective and untrue,” began Solar. “Guru’s in very serious condition, and the doctors and medical personnel around…there’s been a number of people who have tried to visit Guru, who have no business at all seeing him at all at this time. Guru’s not in a position to monitor, oversee who is allowed to see him and who isn’t.” Solar further this statement by saying that Guru did not want certain people or the media to know of his condition. Solar also maintained that he has a good relationship with Guru’s father and brother, two of the people that Guru was also communicating with at this time. Justin had attempted to visit Guru with people that included said individuals. “I just met him for the first time when he came to see Guru. I spoke to him for a while. He came to the hospital with people from Guru’s past, who Guru had cut, cut himself off from, completely, for, again, going on close to nine years, who Guru may’ve been havin’ problems with prior, or more than likely having problems before I even met Guru.” Asked by Peter Rosenberg if that included DJ Premier, Solar refused to answer. “I think it’s clear on who Guru’s spoken to and who he hasn’t.”

Lastly, Solar was asked about last week’s Twitter update, from Guru’s account, that made Solar the lone spokesman for Guru, stating all others were false. “Well, there’s a million Twitters [sic] out there,” said Solar with a chuckle. He did take responsibility for the update. He did add, “We look forward to the time Guru can speak directly to the fans.”
