New York City-based JCOR Records has cuffed the catalog of trailblazing underground hip-hop label Wild Pitch Records, with plans to reissue some of that material by mid-March.
The buyout was completed in October after negotiators for JCOR and Wild Pitch founder Stu Fine settled on an undisclosed price for the label.
Founded in 1985, Wild Pitch is credited with discovering and developing such hip-hop talent as Main Source, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Gang Starr, The Coup, and Chill Rob G. Wild Pitch signed and recorded those acts at a time when urban music radio and television was resisting it was a fleeting fad. Much of the production on early Wild Pitch recordings sampled rarified jazz and classic rock and boasts early work by Q-Tip and DJ Premier. JCOR also has offices in Los Angeles.
Initial JCOR issues of the Wild Pitch catalog, scheduled for re-release in their original packaging March 20, will include a the Wild Pitch Classics compilation LP, Chill Rob G’s Ride the Rhythm LP produced by Flavor Unit patriarch Mark the 45 King, and The Coup’s Genocide and Juice. JCOR also plans later in the year to release select digitally re-mastered Wild Pitch material in new packaging that would include DVD clips of Wild Pitch music video footage, and a limited edition 12-inch vinyl box set that would include unreleased tune singles and instrumentals of Wild Pitch classics.
