This year’s Urban X-Posure Awards nominations were announced by the Urban Music Association of Canada (UMAC) on Monday. The 4th annual Urban X-Posure – Canada’s Urban Music Awards takes place on Wednesday, July 31 at Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre. There was one very surprising nomination for the awards, that being Nelly Furtado being nominated for Best Hip Hop Recording. She received the nomination for the Timbaland remix of “Turn Out The Lights.”

This nomination was enough to piss some people off, specifically an A&R at BMG Canada, who said, “God Bless Nelly Furtado with her nomination in Best Rap recording.

I guess this took the spot that Ghetto Concept or Swollen Members would have received in its place. This is a bit of a shocker for Vikrecordings. The Urban scene has long complained of a lack of support from the major labels in this country for the scene here, and then this. We also were the first Major in Canada, to sign a current rap group, RASCALZ, and the first to sign a second rap group, GHETTO CONCEPT. Turn Off the Lights indeed.

Now, I can see his point and I would normally bitch about such a thing in a similar fashion. But in the case of Nelly Furtado I don’t really mind because despite her r&b flavor she used to be a straight up b-girl. No joke, rapping, graf, breaking, the whole nine. Other notable nominations are Swollen Members, Kardinal, Choclair, and K-os. The latter actually is up for 5 awards, including best new artist. That’s funny, he isn’t new.
