Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 9/16/2012

DMX released his first album in over six years. The onetime Yonkers, New York superstar’s Undisputed  marks X’s first album away from Ruff Ryders Entertainment, although Swizz Beatz remains greatly involved in the rapper’s seventh solo album. The Top 20 debut is the lowest of DMX’s career, which has included all but five #1 debuts (2006’s Year Of The Dog…Again scored a #2).

In an otherwise quiet week on the charts, Reggaeton/Latin Hip Hop star Daddy Yankee also debuted, with his sixth album, Prestige. Previously, Yankee worked with N.O.R.E., Pitbull and Paul Wall throughout his decade-plus career.

    DMX Claims To Be Undisputed

In his first release since 2006, DMX is back with a new label despite some familiar album personnel. Dame Grease, Swizz Beatz and Elite all supplied Dark Man X with production, as vocal guests of note are limited to Machine Gun Kelly (a/k/a MGK). Undisputed sold over 17,000 first-week copies, scoring X a Top 20 placement in a career once dominated by #1’s.

The rapper was in headlines extensively during his release week, most notably for threatening remarks about Drake, an artist DMX claims he’s never met, but would have “beat up” at the height of his career.

2 Chainz’ Based On A T.R.U. Story Is The #1 Rap/Hip-Hop Album Again

With the downward shift of releases, 2 Chainz’ Based On A T.R.U. Story is the #1 Rap/Hip-Hop album (#13 overall). The Def Jam Records solo debut from the Playaz Circle member has sold over 270,000 units to date, and features Drake, Kanye West and Scarface. Production is handled by Southside, Kanye and Bangladesh, among others.

    1. ja Rule straight sells records, the hottest nigga in the universe… DMX made a mistake for not puttin’ him on there

    2. Laughterhouse are building slow momentum, I see…

6,600 third week copies… On Interscope! And Em spent two years ‘mixing’ to get it just right… Cee-Lo made more $$$ on this piece of shit than the band did…

But they’ll make it all up live, right, drawing 100 nerds to bumfuck rock clubs and getting handjobs from Japanese male groupies.

      GO LAUGHTERHOUSE!!!

      GO LAUGHTERHOUSE!!!

      1. it not okay for dmx who was a multi platinum selling artist if this was some upcoming artist from the block yea it would be okay but we talking about dmx a multiplatium selling artist

    3. Reading these comments, you’d think selling for 100k was the easiest shit in the world. If thats the case we’d all be rich. Studio equipment has become so accessible that everyone is making “music”. So 17k seems right, even for Dark Man X.

    4. Laughterhouse ‘throw a dick’– right to the bottom of the charts

Who’s the next douchebag to start crying on video, obsese Joell or 55-year-old Crooked I?

      1. eminem can only save himself now, nobody cares about lablemates or crew albums they just don’t sell anymore…..and I’m not gonna just talk shit about someone but just know That crooked I is 33 years old thats alot further away from 55 nice try dude.

    5. Im glad to see the greats doing well. I personally did not think “life is good” was one of Nas better albums, but it miles better than alot of the crap coming out these days.
What makes me most glad is the fact that “our house” is nowhere near an album like “life is good”. Real hip hop is still alive, and Slaughterhouse still has a chance to be a part of it if they stop f’ing around with commersial appeal.

      1. Life is Good is a great album. And one of Nas’ great concept albums. It’s a hiphop version of Marvin Gaye’s “Here My Dear” and one of the best releases of the year.

    6. You people are stupid. DMX said from the beginning dont care about the album says… Like relax is X dont give a fuck

      1. Selling gold and shipping gold are 2 different things… so NO, Ross has not gone GOLD yet. and None of Ross’s previous albums have gone Platinum either.

      2. Selling and shipping gold are the same you nimwit. Pple come on here and speak with such conviction as if they know what they’re talking about. What do you think the label shipped the albums for free? No, the retailers purchased them and are selling them you. So really you’re not directly supporting the artist/label the retailers are. Indirectly yes because if the retailers can’t sell them then they’ll order less which is the current situation bcuz pple are pirating

      3. So all of Ross Album’s like moat big name artists have gone at least platinum bcuz the label ships of that many off the top. But RIAA won’t acknowledge it until RETAIL sales hit close to the number. I’m sure Def Jam has a platinum plaque of all his albums but the artists do get the ones from retail sales

    7. no one buying records anymore. everyone is addicted to drugs. drugs that’s where money at. you can’t download drugs for free from internet, you must buy them straight for cash.

    8. This is simply incredible.. you’re telling me almost 300,000 people thought 2 Chainz music was worth buying?

      Fuck outta here

    9. so many fags on this site proclaim DMX as a legend; mostly after he commented about Drake. They were dickriding him incredibly hard but then they forgot to buy his album.

    10. LOL AT DMX NUMBERS, THESE NEW YORK SUCKERS ARE THE MASTERS OF FLOP, ANYWAY, DMX FELL OFF YEARS AGO, HE AIN’T RELEVANT NO MORE, YOUR STUPID BITCH ASS LIES ABOUT DRAKE IS THE REASON WHY YOU’RE NOT SELLING ANYMORE, FUCK YOU AND EVERYBODY TRYING TO PARASITE ON DRAKE’S FAME.

EVEN 2 CHAINZ WITH HIS CLASSIC ALBUM AND CHRISTIAN LECRAE OUTSOLD HIM IN THEIR NON-DEBUT WEEKS.

HIP HOP IS DEAD, I HOPE THERE WILL BE MORE ALBUMS LIKE LIFE IS GOOD, GOD FORGIVES, I DON’T, BASED ON A T.R.U., IT JUST SHOWS THAT PEOPLE STILL SUPPORT QUALITY CLASSIC ALBUMS, KEEP IT UP.

      1. Quality over quantity. Life is Good, Undisputed, and welcome to: OUR HOUSE have all been top quality releases. I don’t know who 2Chainz is and Rick Ross’ sales are carried by 14yr old girls

      1. Thats what I’m talking bout. Being indepedent he must of made more of these sales than Drake & Wayne make. I’m from the UK so had to import it in, not arrived yet but I’m looking forward to it

    11. “In this closing statement, I would like to describe my firsthand experience of running afoul of this system. Our schooling, which is where the personality begins to form in a social context, effectively ignores any particularities of the individual. There is no individual approach, no study of culture, of philosophy, of basic knowledge about civic society. Officially, these subjects do exist, but they are still taught according to the Soviet model. And as a result, we see the marginalization of contemporary art in the public consciousness, a lack of motivation for philosophical thought, and gender stereotyping. The concept of the human being as a citizen gets swept away into a distant corner.

Todays educational institutions teach people, from childhood, to live as automatons. Not to pose the crucial questions consistent with their age. They inculcate cruelty and intolerance of nonconformity. Beginning in childhood, we forget our freedom.”

    12. fuck you cracker he dont need your faith

in response: go fuck yourself you black smelly cheesy cunt

the nerve of some monkeys on this site

    13. Jay Z sells so many records because he doesn’t hate on artists and music from other regions. Nas is a typical hater from New York City and once he made that statement about Hip Hop being dead, us fans outside of New York lost respect as well as love for him. He a lame.

      1. but Nas didn’t say any specific region killed it you dumbass. he didn’t put the onus on any specific region/group/individual so i don’t know why people all of a sudden took offense at his statement (especially people from The South, which i’m willing to bet is where you’re from).

      2. That ain’t the reason. Nas is and has always been a lame ass attention whore and people are finally starting to realize it.

      3. We lost all respect for Nas even before he started hating the south. He a coward and a lame. We salute Jay Z down south!

      4. People hate on Nas because he has survived all the bullshit hurled in his direction for 20 years. That’s called a career kids. Yung Joc, D4L, and Dem Franchize Boyz are somewhere serving fries.

      5. yo @Northats2378@gmail.com you a bitch nigga just for saying that shit. Pac made more money then you would in your whole entire fucking life time!

      6. What the fuck does that have to do with anything you fucking basehead? We ain’t comparing my bank account to Pac’s. Take your clown ass to bed before you fuck around and miss the bus in the morning. Faggott.

    14. “Cats dont know what to say when they talkin’
So I just let a nxgga say what he feel
Fxckin’ with the kid, they gon’ end up in a coffin
Cause I’ma say what I gotta say with the steel
Nxggas hatin cause I got a job
I know its their job to be hatin’
Im a dog so I dont fxck with cats

    15. Rap/Hip Hop Sales are in a STEADY DECLINE…
I DECLARE 300K THE NEW PLATINUM
I DECLARE 150K THE NEW GOLD

      ALL IN FAVOR REPLY “I”…

    16. DMX flopped hard. lmao he dissed a real gangsta like Drake and his album flopped. deze has beens cant fuck wit YMCMB. Drake and Lil Wayne are real gangsta niggas. fuck DMX. he is just an old fake gangsta. swag

      1. How about the fact Slaughterhouse make terrible fucking music and all four bums have the charm of dogshit on a fresh pair of kicks?

      2. They would simply be better (1000x better to be precise) as solo artists. Not saying they should never rap together, but that being stuck together as group all because “they’re trying to save hip-hop” is horribly backfiring in their faces. You’d think Royce would’ve gotten the solo deal and not Joell. Oh well, here’s hoping for another Bad Meets Evil album; now THAT was a collabo.

    17. 2 Chainz at number 1 tells you what you need to know about this orchestrated bullshit called hip-hop. I cannot think of a worse rapper than this guy, yet he is featured by everyone one in the industry in the space of six months and now has the number 1 rap/hip-hop album. SMDH

      1. It’s called paper champions. A artist should build a buzz off their own music and merit. I could rap my ass off and people would be like thats cool. But if the sheep see kanye or jay z back me up then it’s worth a listen. The people the fans need to make a peoples champ and more of them or low rate rappers will get co signs and the blind will eat it up. I agree dude skills is limited and horrible at times. His dumpoffs are atrocious like Mercy when he ended with money tall as Jordan. I’m not buying the album so i’m not hating but Nas, Ross all these guys are not skating to easy gold.

    18. Actually, I’m surprised DMX is this high in the charts, he had no buzz at all, his only buzz was his name. I’m proud of DMX, you guys should be too.

      1. I agree with this exactly, X had absolutely no buzz what so ever so I’d say cracking the top 20 is an accomplishment. Not great album sales no doubt, but all things considered the album is already selling more then I thought it would be.

    19. DMX had zero promotion, horrible distribution etc etc + he became a self-parody with all his drug charges and jail stints… that’s a bad #, yes, but…

Slaughterhouse– a horrible group who make horrible music– are a MUCH bigger FLOP when you consider the time, $$$, promotion put into it…

Call ’em a TAX WRITE OFF if you want but that wasn’t the PLAN, was it?

Somebody better start Joell Fucking Ortiz Kickstarter because that’s the only way that woeful fatso is making another record.

    20. All these numbers are horrible. At this rate NaS is gonna have his first solo album that doesn’t even go gold. DMX 17,000 are you serious? Slaugterhouse not gonna hit 100k for awhile… Only thing that is selling better then I expected is Lecrae’s album.

    21. I just had to come on here to hear all the nerds and lame wrist niggas diss DMX and slaughterhouse. U fags got no respect and dont kno shit about the biz or about rap music in general. Especially todays biz…

    22. yo … this shit is crazy, the game is fucked up man lol. 2 chains topping the charts each week but DMX flopped hard.

    23. heres another bias hiphopdx remarks on X’s career dude still richer than your 2chainz gold album or drakes both albums put together You Are WACK!!! Allen Jacobs

    24. slaughterhouse is real hip hop. anonymous is down there hatin hard on them, they are bums right?you must like waka flocka,or is gucci whos nutz u on? those 4,tech n9ne,and yeah, the white boy, only people tryin to keep lyricism alive dickwad

    25. What the fuck does that have to do with anything you fucking basehead? We ain’t comparing my bank account to Pac’s. Take your clown ass to bed before you fuck around and miss the bus in the morning. Faggott.

    26. I think Joe Budden killed the group with his shitty attitude and fans won’t break their neck to buy they album. Ross will have to have a mean single to help him get up to half a milli. 2 Chainz I can’t hate never thought he would be that high up but do your thing. Overall it looks bad in the rap game. Big names struggle to go gold and it’s not piracy. Remember when you could hear that first single and just know you was buying the album win lose or draw. Some of these albums don’t have the proper 4 or 5 songs that are certified heat that at least ensures you will like a good bit of the album. I go to the record store but I don’t buy much new stuff and even when I hear it from my buddies buying it out the store some of it is stale and after two or three days ur done with it.

      1. More effort is put into a single than an actual, cohesive album. Or, they flood the album with features and rely on other artists to make the money for them. Damn shame.

    27. wow, laughterhouse is killin’ the game!!!

think Jimmy I signs ’em up for laughterhouse III now or later???

gonna be a bidding war for sure!!!

    28. Damn X. You had 5 number 1 albums straight at one point. Now look at THIS!!! I was expecting 110,000 but he came out selling like Baby or somebody like that. Damn X Dahhahaamn.

      1. Did you buy the album? Probably not. So don’t talk that shit. As if he would sell 110,000… hhaha what is wrong with you?

X has had his day, just like a lot of legends in the rap game.

    29. lets be honest the Beats and content on Undisputed belongs on a mixtape the songs sounds like throwaways and dated ..he needs to sit down and craft a proper album with better producers ..real talk

    30. omfg 2 chainz is number one when dmx drops his first album in years……. dark times for hip hop 2012 is gunna happen this is a sign.

    31. DMX is done. He had his run but the days of him selling all those records (which still shock me) are way past over. I hope he finds something else in life to do or just tours off of his old music. Becuz if he gets to bored, he may go back to drugs & end up in jail or something worse. No bs either Im being serious, I just think his times up in da game but he cud still do some features.

    32. I expected DMX to do very poor in regards to units pushed. Most fans of todays generation do not know about DMX like the old fans did. All the new generation sees in a washed up, drugged up and a jailbird. That’s not good because at one point he was top three in the game. I don’t think he will ever get back to that top spot in the industry.

Lastly, I think that this album was sold and distributed through indie labels and was not expected to push an insane amount of units. I will say I use to be a huge DMX fan but this album was nothing too great. I think he should clean up his act and get back with Def Jam and make a proper album like he use to.

    34. x is not on a major label 17k is good on a indie he just made more money in a week than you would make in a year working full time

    35. Times have changed “X”…album is probably good but doubt it’ll be on the next “Sales blog”. Not to mention when “Cruel Summer” hits the charts…it’s a wrap for everybody…

      1. i can’t believe you put jay in a top 5, he a biter. shame. even lil wayne ahead of him @ least he knows he a stealer.

    36. Hate on Ja and X all you want, but I honestly think those two could look back and say they had a good run. 30 mil and 20 mil, pretty impressive. Loyal fans will buy the album(s), sadly this isn’t ’98-’03 when people still bought albums. Shame.

    37. Say what you want about DMX Now, but one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever is “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot”
and that was his first album, imo that album is in the same room as Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt and Ready to Die when it comes to hip hop debuts.

      1. Biggie got fake props because he tried to act like he had Pac shot and DMX got fake props for being a bald headed, muscular, tattooed, thug conscious rapper/actor. So, don’t hype up some average albums as classic.

    38. I think the real statement is how 17,000 still earned him a top 20 placement, haha R.I.P the record business. X better get his Tech N9ne on and get ready for them 200 shows a year

    39. shout out to all the people who say fuck everyones opinion, and sales charts. too those rap fans who buy music because they like it, not because they are a stan or a fan of mainstream.

    40. “he needs to sit down and craft a proper album with better producers”

I agree, but that takes money. Something X no longer has. It also takes major label interest, timing, working with the right artists, etc. X had a good run, but now it’s over. No shame in just walking away.

    41. DMX, DRAKE BODIED YOUR CAREER AND HE HAVEN’T EVEN RESPONDED TO YOUR BITCH MOVE TRASH TALK.

I HOPE THIS CLOWN WILL NEVER EVER RELEASE ANY ALBUM, FOR MY EAR’S SAKE. HE USED TO BE THE SHIT, NOW HE JUST SUCKS. HE WASN’T ABLE TO RELEASNE A SINGLE ALBUM WITHIN YEARS, NOW HE RETURNED WITH FLOP ALBUM, YEAH, THE BIGGEST FLOP OF THE YEAR. EVEN SUCKERHOUSE AND CHRISTIAN RAPPERS MANAGED TO OUTSELL HIM. SOONER OR LATER, HE WILL BE BEHIND THE BARS AGAIN, SMH.

    42. After all the hype that went into his album and after he took a shot at jeezy, jeezy still moved more units with pretty much no hype behind his album. Ross weak

    43. (read)

you think dmx is making money without record sells not in his case.

dude really has a problem with tours he can’t sell any more.

when i was living in san diego he was doing a bullshit dive and couldnt even sell that out. haha

he has lost it a its mixture of drugs and probably telling people he was bi polar.

once you hit the crack pipe and starting looking really used up and bad like he does people dont want to fuck with you no more.

i dont have problem with it i can understand smoking crack at some point in your life it hard to get any excitement.

to white males that buy this shit they see him as a crack head and dont want any parts of him.

    44. it looks like daugtherblouse flopped haha they got to share that bullshit four ways hahahahaha

i’m surprised you underground heads didnt fall for this shit.

groups like them build a strong underground base for street cred.

then continue to sellout and make mainstream radio friendly music the rest of their career.

they give you underground niggas only a track or two on a whole album and its enough to keep you as fans for as long as they decide to do music.

      haha dumb fucks.
