Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 7/15/2012

Although he was over 100,000 units shy of Zac Brown Band, Frank Ocean delivered a powerful shot to the charts with Channel Orange. The Def Jam release garnered a #2 debut, selling over 130,000 digital copies in its first week available. As Frank debuted at retail, Aesop Rock made a gallant return. The former Weathermen/Def Jukie’s first solo album with Rhymesayers Entertainment scored a Top 20 appearance. The lyrical emcee sold an impressive 14,000 copies independently, met with some critical praise. Meanwhile, after a strong surge in last week’s numbers, B.o.B.’s sophomore Strange Clouds fell 61 places the following week, now at #87.

Channel Orange Takes Over The Week

Frank Ocean has dominated the Pop/Hip Hop news cycle for nearly all of July. The Odd Future affiliate released a letter on July 4 explaining his sexuality and confirming past experiences with men. Less than a week following, Ocean’s retail debut Channel Orange was released to free stream, and then made purchasable digitally. Now with a #2 debut, the Def Jam album led all releases, save for Zac Brown’s. Channel Orange features appearances by Outkast’s Andre 3000 and Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt, along with production work by Pharrell Williams. The release was largely self-produced by Ocean and James Ho (a/k/a Malay).

    Aesop Rock Wins Again

As A$AP Rocky has become the talk of Hip Hop in the last year, Aesop Rock reclaimed his space in Hip Hop. Now a Rhymesayer, the Long Island, New York native released his sixth solo album, Skelethon last week. Aesop’s first solo release since 2007’s None Shall Pass, this effort was largely made alone, with one vocal guest and self-production. During his hiatus from solo material, Aesop released his group project, Hail Mary Mallon’s Are You Gonna Eat That? last year, along with Felt’s third album, Felt 3: A Tribute To Rosie Perez, further expanded his production chops. This release not only marks Aesop’s highest charting position of his career in the Top 200, but also the most first-week units recorded by Nielsen, edging out None Shall Pass. Skelethon was also made for free stream earlier this week.

    1. FLO RIDA SOLD 150K FIRST WEEK IN THE UK. HIS SONGS HAVE SOLD 9 MIL SINGLES ALREADY. SHOUT OUT TO DRAKE AND NICKI FOR STILL MOVING UNITS

      1. Apparently u don’t listen to music, anonymous. Niggas aren’t the only ones to listen to music. Gonna need you to understand this. The white suburb fans and hardcore fans are buying this shit. The record companies don’t give a fuck about the hood’s input in today’s music and I don’t blame them. You guys support bad rap music and expect real hip hop in return? Fuck outa here

    2. Ye Flo is massive in europe his songs and videos are everywhere you go

      Big K.R.I.T. – Live From The Underground – 2,900 (74,000)
      That can’t be right

    3. YMCMB STILL COMPETING WITH OLD ALBUMS…THEY ARE JUST UNSTOPPABLE, THEY GOT THIS HIPHOP GAME BY THE CLIT..YMCMB HIPHOP SAVIOR

    4. Frank Ocean flopped. gay people keep loosin. lmao…. YMCMB on top, Zac Brown Band gonna sign to YMCMB. swag

      1. yes, a flop is someone selling over 100,000 units with digital sales alone, with no top singles or pop hits, and still making #2. So icy, go back to elementary school, sounds like you need a refresher course on life. oh, your precious Nicki Minaj hasnt even come close to platinum, think about that

      2. he woulda did half that if he didnt come out with the IM GAY promotional stunt he doubled his numbers..

frank ocean the faggot lounge singer that gay boys listen to

      3. go down south with the other homophobic rednecks, you know what they say about people who hate gays, they really on the down low themselves. so open the mind up buddy, your closet door is opening ever so slowly

      4. Aint that the pot calling the kettle black. Youre gay as fuck,So Icy Boi. You are constantly all over Weezy and Drake’s nuts that they’ve impregnated your teeth.GTFOH.

    5. The term “flop” is used way to loosely on this site. The music industry as a whole, across all genres, has a 95% failure rate. Only 5% of commercial releases ever reach gold status. With a million units of Roman Reloaded shipped in the US at somewhere between 3-$6 wholesale, where exactly is the flop? If she had a 2-$3millon budget which is quite high they’ve(Cash Money)already recouped and made a profit and will continue to do so as the album is still selling. They take a cut from show money, features, etc… Trust and believe when I tell you I’m no Minaj fan. Well at least not of her music. I used her as an example because people seem to think she’s “flopped”. I think you pple already know this and are just hating, or maybe you didn’t. Either way she’s far from a flop. Big Krit & Curren$y= flop. & those are the homies i fuks wit em

    6. dx stop it with the frank ocean is hip hop shit. if hes hip hop then so is usher. atlease chris brown actually raps. damn are yall that thirsty for people to come to your site. you keep associating that nigga with hip hop and its makin hip hop look like it accepts that gay shit with open arms. i love frank oceans music but i can tell you that its not hip hop. this has nothing to do with with me not liking gay shit but it has everything to do with it seeming like you guys are reaching for attention at the expense of what this sites really supposed to be about.hip hop.

    7. i brought BIG KRIT LFTUG KILLER MIKE RAP MUSIC CURRENST SI

dont sleep on that killer mike its the opposite of that sucker shit they play on tv

    8. everyone and their mommas are experts nowadays. everybody is a critic now, walking around like you know everything about the industry or the genre even. lmao @ the breakdowns about album sales; who’s real who’s fake etc. y’all are pathetic. if you were so knowledgeable then get an editorial job. either buy the albums or stfu. nobody wants to hear your tinpot philosophies! your favourite rapper flopped? damn shame. maybe he/she would have done better if they actually had skills or if yall Socrates ass motherfuckers actually BOUGHT THE ALBUMS instead of hulksharing their shit. Hip-Hop fans are pathetic..by far the worst fans of any genre, period!

      1. And who cares about sales? if the shit is great then it’s great. be grateful it even came out for yall to her, you ungrateful bastards..no wonder why your genre is dead. yall don’t even support it

      2. I agree with you.. the comments on this site really reflect what a joke hip hop and its fans have become. Its almost. Its almost sad really.. they all just look like a bunch of retards.

    9. props to Frank Ocean for moving almost as many as Chris Brown. We all kno who’s fanbase is way stronger but Chris Brwon’s new music has been too poppish.

    10. 131,000 homosexuals. Smh. DEATH TO ALL GAYS and I am not trolling. I am from Africa and no gay would dare come out here and say he is one. Ask my other African brothaz, they know wassup.

      1. I hope to God you are a troll, because if not, (and even if you are, really) you are a serious disgrace to the Mother continent…

      2. Look at this bitch that always jump on every shits that has “k” in it so he could bleed and type KKK, bitch ass niggaz over here. You niggaz cant come back to Africa with that gay shit without getting burnt live.

      3. No real African would ever say that. That’s right, real africans would say, mugumba bngade wakumbi

    11. Nicki Minaj got exactly what she deserved for making fun of the church at the Grammy Awards. You can’t mock the Catholic Church and get away with that.

    12. I bump Drake in all 3 of my rides and at the crib. The young boy had a solid album. I have never listened to his previous albums, because I don’t move in the past. I’m waiting on his next album, Carter 5, God 4gives I Don’t and maybe Nas.

      1. Yea but album sells dont equate to his success. His singles go plat and not to mention his shows are sold out ever time.

        He is winning!!!

        Now smile at that

    13. Eric B & Rakim’s ‘Paid in Full’ album took 8 years to go platinum. At a time when you couldn’t download albums for free off the internet.

It’s listed as 227 of the top 500 greatest albums of all time (any type of music), and regarded as a top 5 hip hop album of all time by most hip hop critics.

Point being one of the greatest albums, ever, struggled to sell units.

      Sales mean nothing.

      1. True that. Nas’ “Illmatic” went platinum in 2001, seven years after it was released, despite being seen as a hip hop classic.

    14. What a mo…frank could of sold double that amount if he kept quiet. We all know every R&b male singer is on the DL we just dont need to really know.

    15. “Sales mean nothing”

Tell that to Jay, Wayne, Eminem, Nas, 50, Kanye, and anyone else who has ever sold millions just so some internet geek can come to a site and say some silly shit about numbers not mattering.

    16. Frank Ocean won’t last. While his personal life is his own choice, in the long run, people won’t support his shit. Honestly, he should have kept quiet or awhile, cause now more people will judge him based on his lifestyle than his music, and while that’s not fair, that’s just the way the world works. You have to get a certain amount of power within the industry first, then drop a bomb shell.

    17. Damn Curren$y ain’t even on the radar anymore. Especially from a business standpoint, Shante shoulda made it work with young money

    18. where Curren$y at? last time I checked he was just behind K.R.I.T. Niggas need to buy that shit. It’s great.

      1. Yeah continue to buy albums of generic no talent weed rappers with nothing to say instead of real MCs!!!!!

    19. FUUQQ YEEZ MY NIKKAS

    20. “the comments on this site really reflect what a joke hip hop and its fans have become”

^ to be more accurate, the comments here show the mentality of certain people who represent the new generation. There are plenty of Hip Hop fans who do not comment on this site.

    21. Flo rida’s album may have flopped but his singles have already crossed 8 mill worldwide so him & his label are still making bank

    22. I love Porn, I am sure most porn dudes are gay, ok, but I would not watch porn of an openly gay porn actor even if it is an straight scene….

    23. Whether his preferences are, he’s a talented artist whose gamble on releasing a free mixtape paid off big time. Don’t hate on talent, I rather listen to a bisexual artist that is actually good rather than a no talent artist that’s straight.

      1. My guess :

        20,000 first week

        2,000 second week

        150 last week

and it is one of the BEST record he has released in decade.

    24. NAS GONNA KILL EVERYTHING
YOU YM FAGS ALWAYS MOUNING ABOUT DUMB ASS ALBUM SALES.
      NAS GONNA FUCK EVERYTHING UP

    25. FUUQQ YEEZ MY NIKKAS

    26. Damn, Aesop!! 14 thousand first week??? How?? I can’t understand that at all. That’s a shitload for an indy artist. El-P only sold like 6 thousand first week, wtf. I didn’t know Aesop had that many fans, that’s impressive.
