Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 4/4/2010

There was more new Urban releases shaking up the charts than typically seen in 2010, last week. For starters, Usher‘s divorce ode, Raymond v. Raymond took the number one spot. The LaFace Records project cleared 330,000-plus units collectively as the Atlanta veteran sensation put his personal experiences over the last year to music. The work sold nearly 40,000 more units than the #2 spot holder, Justin Bieber and his My World 2.0.

Another R&B veteran, Erykah Badu, followed close behind. Entering the charts at #4, the Universal Motown “part two” in her New Amerykah series stirred controversy last week with her provocative “Window Seat” video shot in Badu’s Dallas, Texas hometown. The acclaimed follow-up maintains her production roster Hip Hop-based luminaries such as 9th Wonder, Madlib, Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Georgia Anne Muldrow and the late J. Dilla.

After last week’s strong showing, another ’90s R&B alum, Monica, held #6 with her Still Standing. The J Records artist crossed the 250,000 mark, with an album that features production from Missy Elliott and Jim Jonsin. Monica’s Atlanta neighbor Ludacris, who appears on Still Standing, also crossed the 250,000 mark Battle of the Sexes. The DTP/Def Jam release fell out of the Top 10 last week just barely, going to #11.

The Black Eyed Peas held the #10 spot with The E.N.D. The release is soon to turn a year old, having already found double-platinum domestic status for the veteran Interscope Records group.

Four new Rap releases found their way to the charts last week. The highly-publicized Def Jam release of Wu-Tang Clan member trio Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Raekwon, Wu-Massacre, entered the charts at #12. Raekwon’s first dealing with the famed New York imprint sold just under 40,000 units, with special packaging and production from RZA and Mathematics.

A west coast veteran, E-40 had three chart entries. After a career with Jive and more recently Reprise/Warner Brothers Records, the Vallejo, California slang-master went to EMI to distribute his companion albums, Revenue Retrievin’ Day Shift and Night Shift. Released separately, both editions sold approximately 12,000 units. Additionally, in a double packaging, the Sick Wid It founder sold 5,000 more of each release, which feature numerous guests.

Neighbor to E-40, Sacramento’s Brotha Lynch Hung returned for a second week of his Strange Music debut, Dinner and a Movie. After reports published on DX yesterday that the comeback album was under-bought by retailers, the veteran emcee cleared 10,000 units.

Lastly, led by Jedi Mind Tricks’ Vinnie Paz, super-group Army of the Pharaohs charted with their third release, The Unholy Terror. With members including Apathy, Reef The Lost Cauze, Celph Titled and Esoteric, this release marked the group addition of former Canibus protege Journalist. Released through Babygrande Records/Enemy Soil, the AOTP album coincides with the group’s ongoing tour with JMT.

    1. usher did alot better then i thought he would i thought he would sell 100k but 300k + is good this album will go plat

monica album sold good too she will definetly go gold good come back from her 06 album she should have never tried to fit in with the snap movment it died by 07

bep proboly make it to 3 mill

if they still got bep number why dont they have drake,cudi,50,em,jay etc

      1. Your right but he did like 120,000 less copies than Here I Stand did. Hes still losing it. However , I have Monica’s album and its outstanding. She really should go at least gold.

      1. Thats dumb! Man yall are saying a lot of DUMB stuff today! If you feel that way, LIVE IT! Dont talk it. Go to work tomorrow and tell your boss that you are giving back all of your pay checks because you just love what you do. See if YOUR babies can eat FANS. SALES IS A MEASURE OF FANS! If you dont buy my album, you CANT be a TRUE fan because you’re not SUPPORTING me.

    2. Congrats to the WU. Damn BEP stay sellin records. Brotha Lynch Hungs albums is raw.. Buyers wakeup.

    3. Who in the white pop folk hell is still buying Black Eyes Peas album?????

hope erykah goes plat…stupid white folks up in arms over a naked body

    4. i dont own that bep album but hey thats some good music

support your artist all this real hiphop talk wu didnt do shit seen one commercial last week why yall didnt go buy that album? obcl1 still gets play dam pt2

    5. for as long as wu been in the game they still chart pretty well. how can hip-hop be dead if wu-tang is forever??

    6. and yall atlanta musicians pls get a Macon Telegraph, yall getting money wit the police and think a nigga aint bout 2 c bout yall

    7. That WU album is pretty good….it’s short, and the production quality ranges a little bit, but it’s a solid effort considering they had very little time to make the album. Havent heard the Jedi Mind Tricks album, but theyre usually on point….want to check that out. Anyone else listened to it?

      1. Yeah it’s dope. Kinda one dimensional but its ridiculously hardcore. Hard beats, hard rhymes. I’ve been bumping it nonstop during my workouts, it definitely makes you wanna get hype. i think its much needed in the game right now. Worth the 10 bucks for sure.

      2. Yeah, listening to Wu-Massacre was a great 30 minutes added to my day. Ghostface was blacking out on a few of those songs, but they all did their thing and killed it. Also, peep Erykah Badu’s new album. It’s a great soft counterpart to Wu-Massacre.

      3. @ jasonctown. I’m talking about The Army of the Pharaohs album. Couldn’t tell if that was clear.

    8. I can’t believe the sales of BEP. I have to listen to this Album, must be very good. They are selling, selling and selling. Crazy
Usher seems to have still a lot of fans in the US

    9. Im pissed off! Wu-Massacre only did 38,000? I know sales don’t really matter but all that free downloading gotta stop. I Guess I’m one in New York who bought the album last week.

      1. True that man I hate it when people download free music of good artists who’s music is worth buying. Anything that wu comes out with is good music

    10. massacre is fuckin nasty. that shit bumps hard in the car. damn shame they only sold under 40,000. i had to get me the meth edition!

    11. damn man i aint knockin the black eye peas but that album wasnt that good they still flyin off the shelves, that popcorn music is where its at! lol

      1. there u go again thinkin about me…..you have to be the biggest fag on the whole internet! go eat a dick!

    12. I’m still Trying to figure out what the dude in BEP who looks like the baboon from lion king does…only thing that I can think of is he’s there to stand next to Fergie so she doesn’t look as ugly…

      1. HAHAHA SERIOUSSSLLYY…that dude doesn’t do shit and he’s getting paid millions! hahaha baboon from lion king…wow…so true!

      2. i thought so too until i saw a recent documentary and footage of him on stage spitting real hip hop rhyming verses..haha..homie raps…he does..i seen it !
        and it was cool…u know.

    13. That Wu album was hot and I know sales don’t really matter but I wish more people had bought that Deck album. If you like Wu Massacre then you should peep the Manifesto. Another hot Wu album to come out this year. It’s too bad it didn’t chart.

    14. btw im not trying to be a dick here but the answer to your too $hort question is most likely no. he doesnt even have a single out. he hasnt been relevant since snoops life of da party song. i bet he’ll barely crack the charts. anyways the three best out of wu-tang shouldve cracked 100,000 atleast. and good job usher holdin it down. if he wasnt sellin then somethin really would be wrong. support that dude, Wu, and Luda. Not many rappers doin number past 100,000 in the first few weeks so props

    15. Man the big numbers arent in sales, they are in downloaded singles form itunes etc. If you like a group but you dont want to shell 10 to 15 bucks for an album just buy the songs you like for 1.99 a pop it all adds up anyway. Thats why these artists are releasing so many singles

      1. no its not……………… they’re releasing so many singles trying to convince these fickle ass customers to buy the whole album.

    16. E 40 WOULD’VE SOLD MORE BUT RETAILERS LIKE BEST BUY AND TARGET WERE SO CARELESS ON THE PRODUCT ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY THESE PPL ARE KILLING HIP HOP SALES WE NEED MORE MOM AND POP SHOPS ASAP AND IM FROM L.A. AND ITS SAD HOW U HAVE TO SEARCH AROUND TOWN FOR C.D.’S

    17. LOL little boy wayne flopped, BOB = Real hip-hop, non auto-tune no poprap. BOB is future.

    18. E-40’s album “Day Shift” has tremendo slappers. Dem Boyz, The Art of Storytelling, and I’m a teach you how to sell dope have some Sinistah beats.

Go cop that Brotha Lynch too. I heard this song b4 is sick.

    19. I found the Wu-Massacre a little disappointing, personally to short and production a bit underwhelming. Army of the pharaohs is dope a shit, plus 16 tracks for 10 dollars is a deal. Wu-Tang ain’t nothing to fuck with but AOTP will.

    20. Wowwwwwwwwwww!!!Recently, I came across a hot dating and friends club.

      –**Black military friends .c 0 m**–

There are many sassy ladies and handsome military guys seeking fun, friendship, love ,marriage and even more!!!!! Maybe you wanna check out or tell your friends.

    21. Do these numbers include downloads? It seems hard to imagine they do because the AOTP album charted better than Brotha Lynch Hung’s album on Itunes, during its first week (3/23/10), and yet these numbers say that it sold less than half of what it did.

    22. WU-TANG! Forget the rest…Hip-Hop will never be the same……LONG LIVE THE PIONEERS! GO GET THE WU-MASSACRE! NOW!

    23. i bought that AOTP that was a dope album thats some underground hardcore hip hop .. E 40 was dope day shift was wayyy batter then the other one and badu was a good solid album and yep i buy cds still my collections is the dopest of all time 3000 cds plus…

    24. shit i bought Badu, AOTP thats real hardcore underground, E40 and Brotha lynch. all are dope albums.

    25. E-40 WAS SOLD OUT AT BEST BUY SO I TO GET BOTH ALBUMS AT TARGET 13.88 EACH INSTEAD OF 9.99! DON’T SLEEP ON BROTHA LYNCH HUNG HE GOT A GOOD ALBUM REAL-DINNER & A MOVIE- THAT SHIT BUMPIN’…STOP BURNING CDS AND SPEND THE MONEY ON THE ARTIST YOU LIKE.

    26. If you love hard core REAL hip-hop give a listen to Jedi Mind Tricks and Army Of the Pharoahs..YOU WON”T BE SORRY..unless diamonds and dancing is your thing..Big Rog CT.

    27. Damn, I gotta fuckin say, it’s a beautiful fuckin day for me to see Wu-Tang fam selling 40, 000 their first week. This proves that real talent is respected, and real artists have REAL fans. I mean come on, Swizz Beatz album sold 45, 000 copies I think, but he had commercial-ass club bangers like “It’s Me Bitches”….I honestly feel that their is a serious lack of hip hop talent nowadays. If there were more good artists, there would be more albums selling. Of course the INternet is a huge factor, but come on..Eminem drops and sells 600,000 first week. Jay Z almost 500,000. Watch when Dre drops. All these dudes are actually, GOOD, talented muthafuckas. I see the quality of hip hop coming back slowly yall…Wu tang is coming back! It’s fuckin beautiful! Yall remember how much Raekwon’s album sold???? Hell yeah muhfuckas…

      1. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Jadakiss’s album. Remember how much he sold in his first week???? Like I said, real, quality hip hop artists, have REAL fans….FUck the onehit wonder bullshit club/dance song bubble gum artists….The real will always prevail…

    28. Wowwwwwwwwwww!!!Recently, I came across a hot dating and friends club.

There are many sassy ladies and handsome military guys seeking fun, friendship, love ,marriage and even more!!!!! Maybe you wanna check out or tell your friends.

    29. Hi! Is it weird that I am 23 and still a virgin?

    30. LOL 59 COMMENTS AND NOT ONE MENTION OF 50 CENT…WOW….I THINK HELL JUST FROZE OVER ON HERE!
GO GO GO ITS YOUR BIRTHDAY! 50 needs to MERK DRAKE….workin with Justin Bieber….Drake is an easy target!

    31. The Wu really needs to cultivate their albums. This ain’t the 90s no more. I’m a die-hard Wu-fan, and I completely forgot that shit came out. That’s a shame.

They need to be more patient in building awareness and really knock at people’s door. Let’em know you’re coming and remind them everyday.

Put out one track, let the reception build, put out another, until people start asking for an album, and finally slap them with the hot shit that has been cooking for minute. Apply the finishing touches, release it, and make noise. Go to people for exposure.

I’m going to Amazon to order that shit, but the Wu really needs to work on their marketing, stop blaming it all on the label. Also, I know everyone has controversial thoughts, as long as they are true, let them be known, as long as they are not bitch ass attacks for timely publicized beefs–that shit is whack.

BTW, I got my New Amerykah Pt.2 yesterday, and it’s so dope, although I need more playthroughs, I think it’s better than Pt.1 in terms of easy listening.

      1. i feel ya, but as soon as i seen it was out by way of the internet, i brought a digital copy on amazon. its a nice album to add to my Wu collection.

      2. AYE DR. JAM UR A WHACK ASS BITCH SON!!! U DONT KNOW HIP HOP IF IT BIT U IN DA ASS!!! FUCK DA NEW SCHOOL NIGGA ITZ ALL ABOUT DA OLD SKOOL!!! 34. LMAO off at Young Money the only people in that group that will drop an album are Weezy, Drake and Nicki Minaj. The rest of them will be mixtape and guest appearance bitches. How long is this “crew” suppost to last for 3 years? haha. Drake stole Kanye’s style so he ain’t shit. He fucking sings more than he raps, fuck that shit. What’s Drake trying to do? Keep pushing his album back until nobody gives a shit about it?

Lil Wayne is starting to fall off it all started with this Young Money Bullshit!
