Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 10/7/2012

New releases flooded the charts from last week. DJ Drama scored his highest-ranking debut to date in Quality Street Music. At #15, the E1 Entertainment album is the second compilation release in as many years from The Aphilliates leader, and marks the first time he cracked the Top 20 of the overall charts. Producer Flying Lotus shocked the charts with his own Top 40 appearance for Until The Quiet Comes. Previously, Fly-Lo has worked with Killer Mike, Finale and Blu.

Duck Down’s Skyzoo also debuted on the charts with his latest release, A Dream Deferred. The Brooklyn, New York emcee is no stranger to the charts, having witnessed success with The Salvation and Live From The Tapedeck in years past. Meanwhile, Rap-A-Lot Records released another winning-project from Z-Ro in the Houston, Texas emcee/singer’s drug series. Angel Dust sold nearly 4,000 first-week copies. Lastly, Strange Music’s homegrown star Kutt Calhoun is the latest label act to crack the charts with Kelvin. The Kansas City, Missouri’s second full-length album comes a year following his first LP.

DJ Drama Tells The Charts That He Makes Quality Street Music

Veteran mixtape/album-maker DJ Drama’s fourth studio album Quality Street Music scored the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native a Top 20. Mr. Thanksgiving’s second independent album maintained the high-profile guests that were witnessed during his Grand Hustle/Atlantic Records tenure. T.I., Young Jeezy and Birdman are featured, along with rising stars Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino. Drama sold nearly 25,000 first-week units with the E1 release.

    Skyzoo Is Living His Dream

Following the success of Murs & Fashawn’s This Generation chart appearance last week, Duck Down found a Top 200 winner in Skyzoo’s A Dream Deferred. Billed as Sky’s second studio album, the effort follows 2009’s The Salvation, and has been met with critical acclaim. Freeway and Talib Kweli are notable guests, as Sky’s album includes concept track dedications to both filmmaker Spike Lee and newly-released ’90s emcee Chi-Ali (who later appeared on a remix of his dedication). No longer a Jamla Records artist, this album also features involvement from longtime Sky-endorser 9th Wonder.

      1. nas album is not for kids it has a different subject matter how many teenagers you know are going threw a divorce ?

      2. Having babies doesn’t make you MATURE!!! That’s why black folks are in the shape their in. Too many KIDS HAVING KIDS.

    1. Where’s Slaughterhouse?!?!?! On a slow boil?!?!

Did Sackofshit Oritz EAT all the CDs before his army could buy ’em?!

      GO LAUGHTERHOUSE!!!

      GO LAUGHTERHOUSE!!!

      EM’s mixing unreal!!!!!!

      1. Yeah, not all of the mixing on this album is Em’s, but it is a good album, despite some heavily generic and frankly terrible tracks towards the end.

    2. the sad thing is that they gonna stop doing albums and push only tracks out…ppl dont buy shit and if they do they buy the wrong(wack) stuff

    3. THROW A DICK in Skyzoo’s worthless “career,” most BORING Duck Down MC ever, let alone one from Brooklyn… Jay didn’t even ask him to play live with him, despite the fact every Sky flow was tongued from Jay’s ass.

      1. ahh the fact THAT ROSS HAS NEVER EVEN GONE GOLD WITH ANY ALBUM.

CHeck the charts. Dudes talk shit without even doing their home work.

      2. That’s cause they’re dick riders. lol. They don’t realize that…

        1. Most of the artists signed to MMG don’t have record deals. They’re signed to ROSS directly and MMG doesn’t have a label deal.

        2. That Ross doesn’t own his own publishing and only gets 40% of his own show money.

        3. THat out of the 10 million he mad last year he only pocked 3. Which is great for any of us.. but shit I want ALL the money owed to me.

    4. Didn’t Frenchie Montana just said this will be Ross (The fake Ross)first Platinum album! WTF!? I still strugglinf to go GOLD!
      #SMDH

    5. Dj Drama didnt even sell 24000 copies. He sold 19363 to be exact, where do they come up with these figures. Retardation

    6. it must suck to sell 2,000 albums.. Like we are talking 2,000. More than 2,000 people go to my school. You could probably sell more than 2k walking around selling them by hand.

      1. That’s actually what they’ll do kind of, alotta of indpendent artist will go on tour and sell alot more albums plus merch at shows especially the one’s overseas. It’s different being independent cuz ultimately topping out selling 60 or 80 thou on a major may seem like a flop but unlike artist on a major they don’t have percentages taken out of their revenue to repay producers, songwriters, A&R’s, promotion, drivers, video exspenses, dancers, lighting crew, make-up artist etc. etc. Most of the time they’ll pocket a majority of the profit and make a decent living and if their smart own their masters which nobody on a major label is doing anymore.

    7. I know, But if he would release it by 1017 Bricksquad or YMCMB it would most likely gone platinum first week. Just sayin

    8. Rick ross is actually the most succsessfull rapper out nowadays.
he has sold 425k copies while 2chainz, nas and not even kanye’s good music can do better.
Ross is theese days real boss!!!

      1. His album has been out longer and still hasnt gone gold… He didnt sell more than any of Jeezy’s albums first week sales… Also, Jeezy’s last album went gold in 1 month… Ross is going on 3 months and no gold… He also has never gone platinum and never will.

      2. Ross is using a persons name that was an actual boss. That takes all credability from him for most rap fans. Esp since crooked i had the real rick ross on a rap song..Now theres two rick rosss rappin and only one of them is real.

    9. “He also has never gone platinum and never will”

Jeezy won’t go platinum either off the latest album, so your logic is sinking.

    10. how come sites like rapradar show a video of nicki minaj getting a gold plaque for worldwide sales? i want to see figures of worldwide sales for Nas’ Life is Good.. it was number 1 in 7 countries before it even hit stores (pre order and itunes) ..

when it was released on that tuesday the 17th, it was #1 on itunes in 11 countries.

i bet it sold 1,000,000 worldwide.. if not it’s pushing close..

at this rate it wont even hit gold by new years…. he needs to release Reach out on the radio, and the ladies will buy in swarms.

or is it really just kids that buy music only?
at least nas has 300,000 fan base… and about 100,000 of them are rappers LOL

      1. They made a great album that in a year or two people will be playing like crazy.. Its not their fault people only buy shitty over played bull shit.

      2. Did you listen to the album more than once? Shit was hot. The problem is…not one chick will buy that Slaughterhouse album. Bitches buy 2 Chainz and G.O.O.D Music…

      3. THROW A DICK Laughterhouse fans, the album was straight ass… Endless cornball raps about nothing over plastic soulless beats…. But oooh, Em’s mixing… it was crazy!!!!

      4. I only listened to it about 5 times before I got over it. It was kind of boring. Some good tracks scattered amongst a bunch of filler material IMO

    11. french montana i thought rick ross was going platinum??? hhahahaha for talking out ur ass u gonna lose ur sales for ur album…

    12. “he already got a few platinum records though”

True, but Ross’s total album sales are over 3 million. He’s not killing the charts, but he’s not selling like a scrub either.

    13. Mainstream rap is fucking dead, lol, well deserved even with these radio station trying to force feed it to everybody none of these wack as niggas can sell gold

    14. It’s over Lupe. He screwed up with the whole 2 part album thing. That is never a success it never works. If Atlantic would of just let him do the double disc thing he would’ve done alot better. Anyways the industry is fucked. These numbers are pathetic. No platinum releases at all this year. Lol no one went platinum this year. This is probably the first time since the early 80s that not one rap album didn’t go platinum.

    15. sales are dissapointing but not surprising.

Ross u still not gold and that new mixtape u dropped is mediocre at best 2 chainz album as but i keep listening to it 0.0 and still aint hear dnas shit . kendrick please save hip hop on the 22nd thanks

      “My Military” – verse 3

      MUTHADON IS GHOST!

    17. “damn meek should have been dropped mmg is dying fast”

Dying? lol They’re flooding the market with releases.

    18. Anyone who thinks Skyzoo is wack is retarded. Dude deserves to be on the charts, he should be selling more than that actually. I can’t believe this 2 Chainz garbage. There are over 300,000 Americans buying a 2 Stainz album? WTF? How the hell does DJ Drama have 25,000 fans? Who buys a DJ Drama album?

    19. Damn, how does a dude like Flying Lotus come out of nowhere and sell 14 thousand copies? That’s pretty impressive..

    20. most of these rappers aint real niggas. Word, Nas bankrupt never was a drug runner, Lil Wayne aint no blood, Jeezy aint no BMF, 50 a snitch, Game a stripper, 2pac a ballerina. None of these niggas real you guys. If they was all real they all be dead now. Like it or not Ross is the new biggie.

      BAWSE!!!!!

    21. i’ll never understand scrub niggas who get on web sites and argue wit other scrubs over another niggas sales and money….they must be broke cuz gettin money niggas aint got time for that shit….must realize these niggas is doin something wit they life….what are u broke niggas doin wit yours? bum ass niggas
