Eminem has finally addressed rumors about a Relapse sequel, which fans long theorized had been initially shelved when Marshall Mathers got sober.
The Relapse 2 rumor mill began churning again this year after Eminem dropped off a new track with 50 Cent titled “Is This Love (’09)” for his Curtain Call 2 compilation in August.
On Thursday (September 8), Slim Shady confirmed in an interview with longtime manager Paul Rosenberg on his new podcast Paul Pod: Curtain Call 2 that no such project will ever see the light of day.
“There’s probably enough to make another Relapse 2,” Eminem said. “There are a lot of songs that did not leak out from Relapse.”
Rosenberg spoke about Relapse: Refill, which contained a collection of new songs from the 2009 tape, but regardless told Em that fans are demanding he release those “hidden” Relapse 2 tracks he just spoke about, which the Super Bowl LVI Halftime performer called “a setup.”
“They’re terrible songs, and if they didn’t even make the albums on Relapse, and I feel how I feel about Relapse, then that should say something,” Em continued. “There’s no Relapse 2.”
Relapse 2 was initially a planned sequel that Em spoke about in 2010 before announcing a shift in creative direction.
“I got back in with [Dr.] Dre and then a few more producers, including Just Blaze, and went in a completely different direction which made me start from scratch,” Eminem explained to Billboard at the time. “The new tracks started to sound very different than the tracks I originally intended to be on Relapse 2, but I still want the other stuff to be heard.”
Eminem would follow up Relapse with his Recovery album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 741,000 copies sold and go on to be certified 8x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The project was the best-selling album of 2010 and was nominated for three Grammys.
Paul Rosenberg announced the seven-part Paul Pod series in August, and said the series would “give a look inside the making of the albums from the last 15 years of Eminem’s career,” including, “the processes, struggles and triumphs from some of the key people that made it all happen.”
Previous guests on the show included Steve Berman, Royce Da 5’9″, James Larese, Skylar Grey and Adam Blackstone. Eminem is now closing out the series with a two-part interview. The second and final part airs on September 14.
Listen to part 1 below, with the Relapse 2 conversation starting at the 13-minute mark.
Relapse was his third best album my first is Eminem Show then Marshall Mathers
Relapse is my personal favorite, the subject matter is the only reason people hated on it but that’s why me and lot’s of his old fans listened to him because he pushed boundaries and had imaginative and offensive lyrics and a backbone, everything he made after was for clout and nothing else, i’m tired of hearing him not say anything and chase attention, recovery was the shift from all his loyal fans and real music to the fans of the pop culture he used to despise and ridicule
It wasn’t just the subject matter which was pretty terrible in some places. It was the accents, the stupid beefs, the trash single and the fact that we waited so long to hear it. He had all of the shock value with none of the fun. Dres production was top notch and eminem was technically sharp as fuck but the album just wasn’t it
Im convinced Em aint releasing relapse 2 because its full of non political correct stuff and f bombs etc, stuff that would get him “canceled” by all these twitter SJW’s, thats why he said they were “horrible” songs
He still drops f bombs talks about assaulting women and has misogynistic lyrics in current music and they can’t cancel him from his past music which they to do every few months anyways.
I didn’t mean fuck i meant the derogatory term to gay people which he literally got dragged on for calling Tyler that. Of course the sjws may not END Eminem’s career but you’d be lying to yourself if you don’t think he’s not protecting his brand
FACTS
Relapse and recovery are his only good albums
What about The Marshal Mathers LP or The Eminem Show?
They are pretty over rated but some ok songs on them
And Kamikaze/MTBMB
There are lots of gems in every rappers vault that need to be heard. The only reason we get treated to leaks now is because rappers are cheap and use the internet to send tracks. Back in the day you had to link up in person to make music. Dumb fucks gave CDs to their homies and it got leaked. But the smart rappers didnt give out CDs and are sitting on a goldmine. My advice to Em would be to cash in and release these tracks himself. Dont leave the opportunity for someone else to release them and profit because they will. We see that currently with DMX.
Relapse is a terrible album. Should’ve left slim shady in the past when he was high and had a sense of humor. Listening to Eminem after 8 Mile is like if Michael Jackson tried to redo Thriller every album without Vincent Price and Quincy Jones instead it’s without drugs and a sense of humor. Damn make some bangers for once in your life bro, stop thinking about Kim, Mariah Carey, your mom and pop celebs bro
Your comment doesn’t make sense… 8 mile came out in 2002… Eminem was doin drugs since he came out and overdosed in 2007. That’s 5 years after 8 mile came out so he was still getting High 5 yrs later. Plus he’s put out a lot of bangers long after 8 mile and since he’s been off drugs. It’s very easy to find his hits since 2002. Which there have been many of.
Bangers? Kamikaze? MTBMB??
Aside from the accent, Relapse is fire. I know Em doesn’t like it, but he defends Recovery (which is easily his worst album) so his opinion on his own music can’t be trusted. I’m still a fan, I always will be. I’d prefer if he stopped caring about what everyone says online because his fans still love him. The shit people say on social media represents the minority, he just has to look at the numbers to determine what the world really thinks about him. Social media has given his haters (who always existed) a voice and I think it influences what he does too much.
I agree with everything you said but if I have to pick his worst album it’d be MMLP2, I could’ve picked Relapse but the beat selection on it was fire. That’s just my opinion…
Mmlp2 does kinda suck but its mid at its lowest, you can’t seriously say its his worst, Revival definitely takes the cake followed by Encore or even Recovery.
You’re right, I think all albums with any Rick Rubin involvement such as MMLP2 and Revival are bad
I bet he gonna still defend revival in next album like the two albums before
.
Relapse was so bad and everyone knew it at the time it came out but these stan revisionists are trying to act like it was a classic. Glad even em admits it was trash
1- Eminem
2- PAC
3- Biggie
4- Nas
5- Andre 3000
6- Jay Z
7- Ice Cube
8- Wayne
9- Kendrick
10- J Cole
Relapse wasn’t good at all but the beat selection was lit… I think most people that’s defending the album don’t realize that they only like the beats…
Eminem actually rapped these lyrics
“Kill whitey!!! Kill whitey!!!” Lmfao
Hows that different from any black rapper talking about killin nz?
I wish Em rapped about killing n-words
Eminem is dope
