Common‘s split from Tiffany Haddish was apparently unceremonious, according to the Girls Trip actor’s recent account of the 2021 breakup.
In an interview withThe Washington Post published on Thursday (July 20), Haddish described her version of events in the demise of what she referred to as the “healthiest [and] the funnest relationship” that she’s ever had.

“It wasn’t mutual,” Haddish said, revealing that the rapper broke up with her over the phone. “It was more him saying, ‘I think this relationship has run its course.’ And I was like, ‘Okay. Like you gonna be a 50-year-old single man. Okay?’”
Haddish first revealed she and Common were dating in August 2020 during an interview with Jackass star Steve-O on his podcast Steve-O’s Wild Ride. “I am in a relationship,” she said at the time, before confirming she was dating Common with, “Yeah, we’re twins now.”

In true Tiffany Haddish form, she also confessed rather crassly they’d taken their friendship from a virtual Bumble date to an intimate level, adding: “And then he got tested for everything, I got tested for everything and yeah, we’ve been fucking.”
Things seemed to be going well for the couple for a while, with Common once telling the People Every Day podcast how much their relationship had made him grow.

“I think one of the important things about relationships for me has been to really know myself more and love myself and be able to express the things that I want,” he said at the time. “I’ve evolved and gotten to that place.”
According to Common, he and Haddish were simply too busy to have a real relationship. “I don’t think the love really dispersed. I just think it was like we weren’t feeding the relationship. Neither one of us is gonna stop. We both care about our crafts and what we do,” he explained.
“We care about love too and partnership, but I think the energy that has been put into our careers and continuing to want to do the things that we do for ourselves and for the people, it was hard for me to balance all of that and keep the relationship fed.”
He added: “[We decided] this is what’s gonna be best for us, to still continue to love each other and be there for each other but to not be in a romantic relationship, because we won’t be able to give to that. I don’t want to be one foot in, one foot out.”

Common shares a 24-year-old daughter with his ex-girlfriend Kim Jones. He was also once romantically linked to Erykah Badu and tennis star Serena Williams, among others.
