Chris Brown Hits Out After Grammy Loss: ‘Who The Fuck Is Robert Glasper?’

Chris Brown has not taken his loss in the Best R&B Album category at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards well, hopping on social media to express disbelief at the Recording Academy’s decision.

The singer’s 10th studio album Breezy was nominated in the category, up against 2022 releases by Robert Glasper, Lucky Daye, Mary J. Blige and PJ Morton. Upon losing to Glasper’s Black Radio III, Brown took to his IG stories on Sunday evening (February 5) with a question that made it clear he was upset about the loss.

“Who the fuck is Robert Glasper,” he asked in a since-deleted post. The post originally appeared minutes after the untelevised category was awarded.

The subsequent posts included insinuations that maybe he needed to bulk up his musical skills, and a fan-made video listing all of the album’s sales and chart stats as evidence of its success.

“I Gotta get my skills up.. ima start playing the harmonica,” he wrote.

The 2023 Best R&B Album award marks Robert Glasper’s fifth Grammy since picking up the same prize for the first iteration of the Black Radio series in 2013, the year after Breezy’s only Grammy win for the album F.A.M.E.

Two years later, he picked up Best Traditional R&B Performance for his single “”Jesus Children of America” featuring Lalah Hathaway & Malcolm-Jamal Warner. He was also the winner for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for his contributions to the soundtrack for the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead in 2017; and the Best R&B Song category in 2021 for his single “Better Than I Imagined.”

While it did not garner a win for Chris Brown on his third nomination for Best R&B Album, Breezy did help him nab the Best R&B/Soul Male artist at the 2022 Soul Train Awards. He also picked up a controversial win at the 2022 American Music Awards during which Kelly Rowland had to chastise the attendees at who heckled Brown after he won an award.

On November 20, Rowland announced Breezy as the winner of the Favorite Male R&B Artist category at the AMAs when some members of the audience inside Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater had a less-than-enthusiastic response. As the former Destiny’s Child member began to speak, she made a point to address those in the crowd who booed and defend Brown.

Chris Brown beat out The WeekndBrent FaiyazLucky Daye and Giveon to win Favorite Male R&B Artist.

The Virginia native was due to headline a tribute to the late Michael Jackson to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Thriller during the AMAs, but his performance was canceled at the last minute without explanation.

Breezy revealed his performance had been axed the day before the awards in a video posted on Instagram showing him rehearsing the set with a group of dancers. The clip started with Brown and two women performing to his latest single, “Under The Influence,” before the music transitioned to the intro gongs of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.”

The video continued showing more of the performance that incorporated other classics from Thriller, such as “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” “Billie Jean” and “Thriller.” “WOULDVE been the ama performance,” Brown wrote in the comments section, “but they cancelled me for reasons unknown. [shrug emoji].”

The AMAs’ decision drew backlash from a number of Chris Brown’s musical peers.

    1. Hip Hop really is turning into the spoiled brat of music genres. I’ve never heard of Robert Glasper either but it shows a massive lack of class to mock someone just because they won an award that you didn’t get.

      1. This isn’t hip-hop tho dumbass this is r&b and the Grammys have a track record of this…to be fair I definitely heard of Robert Glasper before lol but his shit wasnt better than CB, Lucky Daye, and Mary

      2. R&B is an aspect of Hip-Hop, just like break dancing and DJing. Know what the f you’re talking about before replying with idiotic comments… Dumbass.

      3. If R&B was ‘an aspect of Hip Hop’ than Aretha Franklin should do a versuz against Rah Digga huh…. And Stevie Wonder catalog should go up against 2Pac. Off The Wall vs Ready to Die & Thriller vs IllMatic

      4. Really have you seen a versus where a singer went against a rapper? Or how about one where the 2 artists had completely different styles of music from opposite parts of the country? They could do an Aretha Franklin versus but somebody who would make sense like another legendary singer not a nobody rapper like rah digging, you must be mentally handicapped

      5. So you have heard of Robert Glasper, never heard him, but you are sure his shit wasn`t better than the other people on the list? Maybe you should listen to his project first?

    2. This b-tch -ss woman beating clown better stfu and sit down. How he’s still making millions after doing all that he should be counting his blessings.

    3. Very easy. Robert Glasper is a jazz artist and Chris Brown is a fuckhead with bad taste and terrible noise that some ignorant bitches call music. That’s why you’ve probably never heard of the first and that’s the same case why this news has no place on a so-called hip-hop site. GTFO.

    4. man get yo ass to jail over some parking tickets and smuggle juugs to tha homies in yo big ass ‘gucci bag’

    5. Putting aside what a trash human being Chris is for a second, his music is awful too. I always just assumed he’s some troubled artist that people gave a pass because of how talented he is. Pick a random album of his and listen. It’s pop music for children with absolutely no connection from song to song. He didn’t win best R&B because every R&B critic thinks he makes absolutely painful pop music. Cancel culture is some bullshit but it’s crazy that Chris is still selling out arenas when other men’s careers are done over way less than beating a woman. There’s legends that had him as a feature on their album a couple years after all his charges. Shit’s weird.

      1. Found the resident honkey.
What the fuck does representation have to do with this? Chris would be a cunt no matter what his skin color is. Fuck you.

    9. Glasper is a very talented producer. Stop acting light skinned and show some respect.

    10. Chris Brown…stick to rap music and whatever R&B you make lol. Robert Glasper is way too dope for you to even know about.

    11. The amount of people in these comments not knowing who Robert Glasper is is pretty fucking annoying. Especially since jazz contributions to hip cannot be measured.
