Benny The Butcher has opened up about his beef with Freddie Gibbs, explaining that he was caught off guard by the Indiana rapper’s tweet that kicked it all off.

During a chat on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion published on Tuesday (May 2), the Griselda rapper spoke in depth about the complicated relationship between him and Gangsta Gibbs. After Matt Hoffa asked him how their feud started, Benny revealed that it began on social media.

“I don’t even think it started on a song, it started on Twitter,” Benny The Butcher said. “It’s two posts that he put up. It’s one that he made that nobody noticed. Nobody noticed until I said something about it. He wasn’t [mentioning me], that’s why I never said nothing about it. He just said something about what happened in Houston first. I was kind of taken back. I fuck with bro. Shit fucked me up. But I never said nothing about it, because nobody else said nothing about it.”

Benny then said everything was good with him and Freddie Gibbs when they were cool and collaborated on music in the past.

“To be honest with you, it was a surprise,” he said regarding their friendship going sour. “But it’s like, n-ggas ain’t take it personal after that. I don’t know that n-gga obviously. And any n-gga I fuck with wouldn’t be doing that.”

The pair’s feud ignited last year when Benny The Butcher said in an interview with Spotify that his collaborative relationship with Freddie Gibbs “came and went,” despite them having formed a potent partnership in the studio.

Benny’s comments sparked a heated back-and-forth on social media last year, during which Gibbs mocked the Buffalo rapper for getting shot in Houston and Benny accused the Indiana native of “begging” to do a joint album with him.

The bad blood reached a boiling point in May that same year when Benny’s entourage allegedly jumped Gibbs at a restaurant in Buffalo, New York.

The Black Soprano Family boss later claimed to have stolen his rival’s trademark “G” chain during the scuffle while also branding him “MC Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.”

“Benny gay ass need to stop flexing because he was there and didn’t throw a punch,” Gibbs fired back on Instagram. “Hoe ass n-ggas did all that brought a camera man and all for promo. Still can’t pack a room. Go ahead start rapping about me so I can start about these sealed plea agreements and shit.”

While things have since cooled down, Freddie Gibbs told XXL earlier this year that he “couldn’t care less” about “solv[ing] a beef with a rapper,” seemingly referring to Benny The Butcher.

“I’m so far removed from that bullshit in the streets,” he said. “I’m about to be an esteemed actor and a mogul. I couldn’t care less about any of that stupid shit. To me, those guys are like comedy. I make jokes of these guys like that. And that’s why guys like that want to fight because they a joke to me. I don’t even take guys like that serious.”

Benny, for his part, expressed confusion over their falling out during an appearance on Drink Champs last May.

“I guess that n-gga put a tweet up or some weird shit and I don’t know why he did that shit,” he admitted. When N.O.R.E. replied by saying he thought they were friends, Benny concurred: “That’s what I thought.”
