Between Jay Rock dropping critically acclaimed projects this year, Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer Prize, ScHoolboy Q planning his next album airstrike and Ab-Soul always being a moment’s notice away from reemergence, it’s not surprising that the original TDE cadre — a.k.a. Black Hippy — have shuffled the plans for that group album.
But let de facto leader Jay Rock tell it, completing that project requires nothing but time and opportunity.
“When I do round everybody up, I’d have that album done in like two days,” an elated Jay Rock told HipHopDX ahead of his headlining performance at adidas Skateboarding & Journeys’ “Destination San Diego” on August 11.
“That’s an easy call right there,” he continued. “If we start on Monday, we’d be done on Wednesday and mixing it on Friday! When everybody’s on their downtime because everyone individually do [their solo careers] and ain’t nothing wrong with that. So if the world really want Black Hippy and the world can get Top Dawg on the phone, then it might happen (Laughs). Until then, we working, baby. Just keep hope alive!”
A Jay Rock album generally appears to be the hub for a Black Hippy collabo. His 2011 studio debut, Follow Me Home and 2015’s 90059 both sported the single/video combos of “Say Wassup” and “Vice City,” respectively.
Speaking of videos, Rock’s visual rollout has gradually increased over the span of his career, which hit a milestone with the release of this past February’s Black Panther soundtrack album.
“Overall, I gotta say ‘King’s Dead,'” Rock confidently answered when asked what his best video is thus far. “It was real fun [to shoot]. Just being up in a palm tree was something different. I ain’t never seen anyone do anything like that before. I enjoyed myself and had fun. That’s what it’s all about; having fun with this while you can.”
Directed by Dave Free, the little homies and Jack Begert, the video is nearing the 100 million view mark on YouTube and also gave the Watts-bred lyricist his first bullet on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 21.
As for having fun, there’s plenty of that to be had this coming fall for Eastside Johnny and his loyal fanbase on the Redemption Tour.

Jay Rock finna eat. I’m not holding my breath on a black hippy album tho. If it happens it happens.
Let’s make it happen then ???
They’ll drop it when all of them are out of their prime. Fuck all these detox type joints.
Kendrick said before they will never make a black hippy album cus when they 4 do actually have time to get together in the studio they dont get shieet done cus all they do is catch up and get faded. they all are busy men and dont get to get together so easy.
It would only take 2 days because it’d be full of trap beats and wack song content. Give me the Black Hippy before they signed to interscope, and I’ll be happy. No trap!
A TASTEFUL trap track here and there is ok, but I agree that this shit is definitely overused
I agree with you Dope.I like what you said before they were signed and getting too much money the hungry TDE around the time of Ab Soul and Kendrick Turn Me up… they was raw Hip Hop. they are slowly but surely getting corny and Like Guru fromGang Starr said after all the highs come the lows … the fans beenwanted but arrogance and the fact they are shining has them forgetting why they are shining they will want to give it to us when we dont want it no more like the sexy girl in high school taint want you then when years later she done got fat and popped now she wanna holla…., lol ….
A Black Hippy album is needed…for the culture.
Agreed but woulda been better if they made one in like 2013. None of them besides Q are as good as they were IMO.
I think Jay best album was Follow Me Home, Kendrick best is between Section 80 and GKMC, Absoul Control system is his best, and Schoolboy Q best is Oxymoron, although I’d say Q is the most consistent. I sadly can’t vibe to new Kendrick. He sounds poppy. High pitched voice with pop like hooks. Not why I initially liked the guy. Absoul past two albums were disappointing as a whole. 90059 was solid, redemption isn’t that great to me.
