XXXTENTACION’s “Look At Me!” Video Might Be “Woke” But He Isn’t

XXXTENTACION released his new video for “Look At Me!” on Tuesday (September 12), which depicted X putting a noose around the neck of a white 6-year-old child and hanging him.

Countless social media users quickly condemned the inclusion of such a vile attempt at intelligent social commentary, while fans of the controversial rapper applauded the 19-year-old for being so “woke” and socially conscious.

    But he’s not “woke.”

This isn’t some grandiose statement about slavery, white supremacy and police brutality, which he attempts to illustrate in the visual. This is more attention-seeking behavior from a person who revels in negativity, which as he admitted in a recent Instagram story, makes his “dick even harder.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQwbaXMVslM

Many have called it out for what it actually is — a sick cry for help from a person who continually shows signs of being mentally unstable while contradicting himself left and right.

For starters, he has four charges looming over his head stemming from his alleged assault on a pregnant ex-girlfriend, but in “Riot” (the second half of the “Look At Me! video), he raps, “To kill a woman with children makes you a chump.” Hmm.

Then, during his recent social media rant, he jokes he’s going to be “supporting the feminist movement” and at the same time threatens to “fuck y’all little sisters in their throat.”

He adds, “Everybody that called me a domestic abuser, I’m finna domestically abuse your little sister’s pussy from the back.”

Does this sound like someone who’s socially aware? No.

    It’s all an act.

As the “Look At Me!” video comes to an end, X begins reading from his iPhone and rattles off some of the names of black men whose lives were taken by white men.

“But to act out on these irrational thoughts in any shape or form is disgusting,” he reads. “This generation will be loved, nurtured, heard and understood.”

Meanwhile, the Pitchfork article that outlined what his alleged victim reportedly endured at the hands of X are disgusting. According to her account, she was not loved, nurtured, heard or understood.

As she stated in her testimony, X head-butted her, punched her, stomped on her and threatened to cut her tongue out simply because she hummed along to a featured artist’s part on one of his songs.

    Does he sound “woke?” No.

While it’s true X’s debut studio album, 17, currently sits at #3 on the Billboard 200 and “Look At Me!” has already over 5 million views, the hype will inevitably die down and he’ll have to deal with the wreckage he’s left in his wake.

In fact, his court date is October 5 and he’ll be forced to face charges of aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment and witness-tampering. That leaves roughly three weeks before he’s standing in front of a judge. While he still may be innocent in the eyes of the law, the accusations and the words he’s spewed out of his own mouth don’t paint a pretty picture.

Like he predicted in his social media tirade, yes, people are talking about him following the video’s release, but not in a way that urges you to celebrate him as an artist. It’s more like, “Maybe I’ll reconsider listening to this guy or supporting his fake ‘woke’ bullshit and actually face the facts that he’s a misogynistic, potentially violent and toxic individual.”

XXXTENTACION has inadvertently become the poster child for the glaring and overwhelming issue that plagues the music industry — where do we draw the line and actually stop elevating those artists who clearly have no respect for their fellow human beings?

    X should mark the spot.

    1. white people mad at this one kid ‘acting’…negroes been acting this type of shit for decades and been living that life in reality for centuries…Em made a song about killing his wife and mother and you’all say its a classic now XXX is mentally unstable….gtfoh

      1. It’s not about that. It’s about what XXX has actually said HIMSELF — and not in his music. He’s digging his own grave. Whatever.

    2. Maybe this site should stop posting xxx articles until he’s proven innocent. Or just continue with your fake “woke” articles.

    3. I wholeheartedly agree with this article. The aspect of this whole event that I find most intriguing is the almost sudden weight people are beginning to place within the hip-hop community on the personal integrity of the artist that underlies the art. I think we are recognizing that there is a standard we internally hold artists to, although it has been dismissed and repeatedly seared until cases like XXXtentacion arise. In this case, we have an artist that is blatantly self-contradictory in the art they create and the life they live; furthermore, XXXtentacion inflames more sensitive moral and social subject matter by his recent behavior towards a vulnerable pregnant woman and the disturbing imagery of a child being hung. This rightfully infuriates the audience and I hope it causes all of us to question further what voices we allow to become influential in culture. If we really care about women, both pregnant and not, then not only are we to remain consistent in our evaluations of artists like XXXtentacion, but any artist that is misogynistic in the nature of their content. Without using any specific examples because it would be unnecessary, Hip-Hop has become well known in its brand of misogyny and degradation towards females. This is only a climactic and severe example of the slow drift that has been encouraged and permitted for the last several decades. HipHopDx you are a powerful medium of influence for the culture and artistic community. You know the importance of the role you play, and that money is not more important than the values that we hold dearly for the good of society. If you truly want to be revolutionary in your approach, reach out to XXXtentacion and help him. Make a public statement that you do not support him, his behavior or his art but that you are willing to also do something about it. Maybe even reach out and provide him with the necessary tools and resources for him to deal with his depression and pain. This article is a phenomenal start and I respect you for writing it. As to XXXtentacion, I hope you heal brother. You are a truly talented artist. Your pain should not be dismissed, but neither should the pain and offense that you have imposed on others. There is grace and forgiveness. Your actions and art will have immense consequences on society, I hope you will make the right decisions moving forward.

“Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. … We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. ”

      1. misogyny is pretty much synonymous with mainstream hip hop. If this is where we draw the line then the entire hip hop community needs help. I feel like I can’t name a single artist that gets radio play that has no misogynistic lyrics, Including female artists. Something definitely needs to change.

      2. Hey Phil these are just allegations, so for you to assume they are true makes you look like a tardo. Also, your post is so long, go outside please.

    4. He did it all for publicity. He doesn’t give a dam about the race. He obviously doesn’t give a shit about kids cause then he wouldn’t have hung one up infront of the other. It was all for attention and yes we’re giving it to him thanx to websites like these

      1. Do you have a sister? Mother that you love? How would you feel if I were to beat the shit out of them both? Would you call me a good guy?

    5. HHDX has over 10 pages of XXX articles. They even have an article titled “XXX to is a doper artist than you think” encouraging people to listen to this clown. Where do you draw the line Kyle Eustice because you write for a website that elevates ignorance over substance. Make up your damn minds.

    6. You are a white woman commentating and weighing in on a culture of music you do not understand. How about you write an article addressing mental health? or an article addressing the issue he is talking about in the video. Why would destroy his message because you do not like the messager. He is woke, and like every person out here is fighting things in which the next person wont understand. How can you side with someone and he hasn’t been convicted? Because you already pre judge him and the things you feel he is capable of doing. Bloggers like you make me sick with your bias.

    7. Okkk, the people that don’t agree with him need to get their head outta their ass and need to think about our culture. Ignoring problems like black on white and white black, prejudice murder, etc, can not, and will not help them get better. Everyone who wants to take a stand, will take one, and just because someone who’s mildly famous, and has delved into negative thinking, doesn’t mean he’s doing it for attention. If you’re famous, anything little thing you do is considered”attention seeking”and it bugs me that people feel the need to post shit thinking they’re all fame whoring. Bitch. You are dumb as fuck. I’m 15 and I’m more “woke” than these old fucks who thinks old school is still the norm. Sooooo once you guys actually adapt to the way we live nowadays, stop ignoring the controversy, and actually take part in the help, rather than writing on hiphopdx, then I might consider you a human fucking being.

      1. ” rather than writing on hiphopdx, then I might consider you a human fucking being.” = yet, you are writing on HipHopDX.

    8. Nobody is “woke”. Kyle Eustice (the writer of this article) is “dumb”. Do you believe that people are innocent until proven guilty? I know I do. The allegations are false until they are proven. XXXTentacion will not disappear because the kid makes great music (ex. the second verse of this music video, Vice City, Slip Knot). Can’t believe I’m commenting on this silly clickbait article, but I’m enjoying writing this message to Kyle. Kyle you are the worst HHDX writer I’ve ever seen. Justin Hunte would never write a piece of poop like this.. step your game up Kyle! I love HHDX, but you stink sir.

      1. Ok few things here. First of All, do you REALLY believe every one is innocent until proven guilty? Have you seen the OJ Simpson files, Michael Jackson, rkelly, the cops that killed Fredy Grey? They’re all innocent too right. Second, you’re saying he makes great music but that’s not a fact. If you think he makes great music well I feel sorry for you but I’m sure most of us disagree. This kid is exploiting this type of art we so dearly love called hip hop by making grotesque lyrics and abhorrent videos just to grab attention. The kids got some talent but it’s obvious he’s messed up in the head.

      1. Actually, seems like a perfect time and perfect article for a thought piece. After all, XXX was trying to “provoke thought”, was he not?

    9. Another bias article by dx shocker . I guess Kyle knows more about music the Kendrick. I dont know who gives the go ahead to write this crap

    10. honestly with the thick headed rap coming out now it only reflects the thickness of the young or old ignorant listeners…it’s wack as wack can be even if someone has wack flow like the above if its got some meaning or good message behind it lyrically then its cool even if the delivery or vocals aren’t quite right it gets a pass or even more than a listen but this poo from lil gun, lil boat, lil shit or whatever other lil or wanna be Xxx, can kiss the proverbial… this weak logic will not be last…..it is for the heard… This is not HipHop its not even music lil shit and wanna be XXX clearly are an abomination to life and Hip Hop in general… that’s the worst ever this XXX poo along with the Asap’s need a G check..sew your mouth shut!

    11. nothing to do with it! trash is trash and your mind is full of it clearly! even Em fans question his lyrics sometimes.. all industry buckers have a tendency to come out with BS from time to time all this crap requires questioning cause if you put yourself on a pedestal then expect the questions and reviews even by challenged listeners like your self.

    12. ALSO Screw HIP HOP DX for knowing these lil sucks will get traditional listeners pissed off with this article artists and current music…. ABOMINATION

    13. those are accusations made by his ex girlfriend that’s her side of the story there’s two sides here don’t believe everything you here a person say & as for him not being “ woke “ that’s false he stands for nothing but positive for his fans he wants to help them with their problems & help them with their depression all the negative things he says is towards his haters that actually send him threats etc

    14. Ironic how they have this white chick telling all us other minorities what’s being “woke”; she probably was raised with a silver spoon in her mouth. She has 0 idea of what’s being “woke” and doesn’t understand the idea of imagery and facts. She probably never been pulled over before.

      1. So because her skin is white, you instantly assume she was rich and has never been pulled over? You’re 100% an idiot. This is coming from a hispanic guy btw, so don’t try playing the white card on me.

    15. Anyone can say whatever they want, its music. But dont be surprised if ppl get exposed for doin the shit they rap about ie this article. Em is actually a bad example for you to use because he always had an answer for the controversy surrounding him and his career on his songs.

      1. My god i wanna sock you in the face, i wanna sock you in the face so h.. listen he doesnt care about views your point is invalid, your opinion worthless and your mind non existent

    16. Why is this person even writing on here? I am not even a fan of xxx but this article is totally one sided. writer already convicted him and wrote from that perspective. This writer i am sure doesn’t realize every woman aint righteous unfortunately. Some are damaged and do evil things such as make up charges to bring someone down. Please go write for rolling stone or some other mainstream magazine which only covers rap because it is popular and doesn’t respect the culture and struggle. GTFOH WITH YYOUR SLAM PIECE.

      1. It’s not a news article, it’s an editorial, you ignorant weasel. It’s just a writer expressing his opinion. That’s the whole point of it, dumbass.

    17. “He adds, “Everybody that called me a domestic abuser, I’m finna domestically abuse your little sister’s pussy from the back.”

Does this sound like someone who’s socially aware? No.”

that was a joke dumbass. this is probably from a hater. dont judge a guy by his past. judge it by what he does at the moment, and everything happens for a reason. he was joking about the instagram stories, he even said it. and he did the music video this way because he know all the hate would rise up and he would be proved that the message behind the music video is right

    18. It’s crazy how everyone that watches this video only sees the child being hung. Then you go back to his case. We don’t know if he’s guilty or not.

      1. The problem with it is that it’s a child being hung, a person who barely understands what the hell is going on and what he’s doing. If XXX had used a white adult such as a police officer or politician, which would be a lot better and make more sense, it wouldn’t take so much away from what the message should be. Children have no concept of what issues of race are until adults start teaching them about the differences between races

      2. Bro notice no one was upset with future for push drug addiction. Naan one of them said 21 savage was wrong for rapping about killing black folks with “no heart” with a knife ratted on his forehead. But as soon as someone targets white people or women it’s all off a sudden DISGUSTING……these outlets are for hire to the top bidder

        1. It’s all disgusting. I think people are just desensitized to the drugs and violence being pushed through Hip Hop. Violence and drugs have been pushed since the beginning, 30 years. Hanging white kids is something new, hence the outrage.

    19. No one is ok with what happen to the child. Thats the whole point. He is using it to say no matter what color… its the wrong thing to do. It was for shock value. I was against it as well but I understood the point he’s trying to make

    20. Coming from a hip hop website that in the same day posted an article named Does Drake Have A New Girlfriend with a description stating “move over RiRi, is it BriBri and Drake now..” lol.. I guess we know why the artist of this generation are so screwed up. Nowadays Gossip>The Music

    21. Do you think it’s appropriate for HipHopDX to be have dozens of articles and get thousands of clicks off of an artist who they deem so evil? Would it not be better to completely ignore him or is it to hard to lose out on the attention?

    22. HipHopDX at it again with another groundbreaking piece of journalism! Let’s see X’s career try to recover from this scathing diatribe that inadvertently promotes him!

    23. Youre just quick to judge the video without knowing the true meaning behind it. Xxxtentacion explained in one of his Instagram stories that its not about going against white people, its about how whether yourw black or white we should all have equal rights. In one of his other insta stories he clearly states that soon he might have an interview explaining the whole video so sit down vro.
And why you so concentrated on the white boy who got hanged, what about the THREE black people that were hung in a tree at the beginning of the video? Fuck outta here with this.

    24. But wait… is Logic with his rip of J.Cole , Kendrick attempts any less of an attempt to appeal to “woke”minds while really just watering down content thats already out? I never peeped much of XXX’s music but this goes harder than anything in that nerd Logics notebook and yall will write an editiorial about this dude faking his “wokeness” (which many “wokes” do) while ignoring the fact that Logic remade Kendricks “Alright” on his album because yall got soft batch editorials written by people who prolly gentrified a neighborhood.

      1. Lol at the logic thing, ive been sayin he’s a watered down kdot/cole since i first heard him, but he still got some good songs and hes alot better than alot of these other artists. But this editorial isn’t really about being woke or not. Its about the hiphop community, this site included, turning a blind eye to some of the disturbing shit artists get accused of. Shes saying we shouldn’t be praising the message in his video because his actions contradicts his so called message.

    25. Everyone has their own opinions. You can say what you want about this article, or his video, or his music.. but I want to see what excuses you come up with if dude is found guilty for all that lame ass psycho shit. If XXX did half the shit his ex is talking about then he has real problems. People get cheated on all the time.. for him to flip out and torture this hoe over it is a weak ass move. All you fans better pray your boy isn’t guilty. Going to have to start finding better heroes. Lmao

    26. ARE YOU MAD KYLE? YOU SOUND MAD? lol you should really get off this man’s dick, you’re only making him more popular

    27. he sounds like onyx when the 2nd part of that song kicks in! making me want to go listen to him, just needs to stop with the bullsh!t

    28. Wasn’t the point of hanging the white kid to mirror trayvon and emmit tills death? Colored children who died at the hands of racist whites or overtly aggressive wanna be cops? So by hanging the white child it was supposed to illicit outrage such as what should be seen in those cases. You guys took the bait but missed the forest for the trees. No matter the color authority or people with it abusing those with less such as POC and children is supposed to get an a disgusted response.

      1. Your right that was the comparison that was being made and the level of how evil both acts would be pretty much equal but that shit was straight to draw up controversy, he was reading if his iPhone for Christ sake, that shit was probably sent to him in a text from some guy in a suit

    29. After Tyler ate a roach and hung himself in his video X needed to do smth much harsher. Btw his ’17’ album is not bad, but this video is like Lay Gaga’s carrer. She started from the beginning like the most expensive Jacko and most extreme Manson vids, and after 3 albums nobody cares about her, cuz there’s no way higher. I feel the same with X, and as you can see as OF disbanded and there was no hype it came to light even their best rapper is a pretty mediocre one.

      1. How wrong you ended up being since X’s latest album ‘?’ was #1 in billboard 100s only something like a week after its release.

    30. Fighting racism with racism isnt an answer. Its not a solution it only makes it worse. you only create more hate. Its not about black and white its about good and bad people and both sides have them. If you a good person who doesnt want more seperation dont cosign to this bull

      1. You´re right about that but he´s only 19 he doesn´t know how to express properly or responsibly the fact that he´s trying to fight racism is extraordinary, he should be heard but should also express himself better

    31. this article actually makes good points.. the fact that people is so easily fooled into believing this is a display of a conscious artist is fucking laughable. XXX is pure poison to the culture…

      1. Fuck off! He is a good person, he helped me get through some hard times, he is also very uplifting and kind…..he should not have died. RIP X. We will miss you?

    32. This article is biased trash you use the word alleged but the rest of your vernacular assumes his guilt. I can’t take your opinion seriously you just sound jaded.

    33. This is completely biased. Geneva admitted that the charges were false. Just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean he’s a criminal you stupid fuck.

    34. This article is biased, The people who write this trash are working for a government that want everyone who listens to this ¨Trash¨ want us gone they want us to sit by and listen to orders and follow them X speaks of his opinion and it should be heard everyone deserves to be heard just not when they are bias

    35. Wow…I just lost brain cells reading this article.
I have issues with ill informed journalists.
You’re out to destroy the good.
      You feed us sh*t.
      But I’m not dining here.
      Good day-HHDX

    36. I agree 100% with this article. XXXTentacion was a disgusting human being. Talented, yes, but that shouldn’t overshadow how vile and abusive he was. It appalls me how people excuse his behavior. This article isn’t biased at all. It literally says the charges that were brought against him. There are pictures that document the abuse she suffered from him.

      1. BITCHHHH HANG YOURSELF I STGGG XXX WAS BETTER THAN YOUUU FUCK OFFF HOP OFF HIS DICKKKK BROOO

      2. Tf you disgusting human being he helped more people than you ever will tf? He did more in 20 years than your entire family will the next 100 years

      3. i’m surprised anyone thinks he’s talented. his music was shit and though it may have got him his 15 mins of fame—owing only to the fickleness and flippancy of a society unashamedly obsessed with watching train wrecks—his music will be forgotten just as soon as he is, destined for history’s trash bin. the only response you’ll get in 10 years if you try to introduce his name into the discussion is, “who?”
