Born in Chicago but raised in Atlanta, Phay is a Palestinian-American whose musical stylings reflects a myriad of cultural influences. In his own words: “I’m a Muslim Kid from East Atlanta who can make a gospel song because anybody can catch these bars.” Naturally, the quirky rapper’s favorite growing up was an unconventional choice: Young Dro. Why? Because of his larger than life personality. “He’s one of the most underrated rappers and I think people write him off because he’s from the South. It’s amazing what he does with words.”

For his newest single titled “Holy Moly,” Phay crosses off a bucket list item by collaborating with Dro, who provides charming a Dirty South wit over Rascal’s (“Juke Jam” for Chance the Rapper) trumpet-heavy, trunk-rattling production. Not to be outdone by his idol, Phay comes correct with the opening verse, setting the pace and providing a great juxtaposition of youthful energy and veteran calm.
“Holy Moly” ends with a brief outro from Phay’s mother, fitting because the song appears on Phay’s forthcoming Mama project. Mama will be released on January 20, which coincides with Inauguration Day. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
