Since his latest record, The Ocean, Denver native Deca has gained a reputation for his meditative production, introspective lyricism and often raw, emotionally evocative themes. His videos bring his art to life, as illustrated in “Waiting.”

Deca’s newest project Forest Agates is the first of a two-part album. As described in a press release, “It’s an archetypal journey through a forest peopled by strange beings, power hungry despots, anima figures, searchers, dreamers, and people trying to reconnect with something they feel they’ve lost.”

Predominately instrumental, the album features vocals on only two of the 25 tracks, both of which are getting the vinyl treatment and being released as a limited 7-inch pressing. Similar to The Ocean, Deca created the album art for Forest Agates using photographs of rocks belonging to his brother Danny to whom the album is dedicated.

“This album is dedicated to my brother Danny,” Deca tells DX. “I can probably trace everything I do musically back to the ‘El Segundo’ single he had when we were kids. He introduced me to art, Hip Hop and just about everything else I’m into. He introduced me to agates about 10 years ago and I’ve built up a small collection since then.”

“Agates have these otherworldly mandala-like patterns that I can look at for hours,” he continued. “They can mean something different to you symbolically every time you look at them. They’re like human souls, or the patterns created by a person’s experiences throughout a lifetime, or microcosms of the universe, or like songs; how the song moves, the rhythm, the transitions, the re-occurrences and slight variations, the emotion behind it, the colors the sounds create, etc. So that’s the idea with this album. Each song is an agate. I imagine finding these things. Rather than make them, I stumble across them on my way through the forest. Like all of my music, this album is about navigating through the chaotic times we’re living in and is my way of offering what I can to help heal our collective sickness.”
