Tupac Shakur passed away on September 13, 1996 after a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. Over the past 19 years, Pac left a legacy amongst both fans and detractors in his music. Arguably the greatest rapper ever, many feel that Tupac was truly before his time.

Aside from the gangster rapper image presented to us during much of Pac’s later years, true fans know that he was much more than that. A philanthropist in his own right, one of his main objectives was to use music as a platform to reach out to a younger generation, and make the world a better place. Anyone with his intentions must’ve been raised greatly, right? Here’s five life lessons that Tupac Shakur learned from his parents.

“Mama told me never stop until I bust a nut” – from “Hail Mary”

“I got advice from my father, all he told me was this. Nigga, get off your ass if you plan to be rich” – from “Blasphemy”

“Mama told me long before I ever came up. Gotta be true, to watch ya do and keep ya game up” – from “Thugs Get Lonely Too”

“You know what my momma used to tell me: If ya can’t find something to live for, then you best find something to die for” – from “Something 2 Die 4”

“Now up and at em it’s on, I was raised to be strong. And Mama told me be a Thug since the day I was born.” – from “R U Still Down”
