How many of ya’ll know where Texas is? Lets do a little word association, I’m sure when I say Texas, hip-hop is the last thing that comes to your mind. But you and I both know geographic boarders do not confine hip-hop. “Nowadays rap is regional and hot groups are just seasonal.”

With that said, Bavu Blakes destroys any stigmas you have ever attached to hick ass Texans. “Create and Hustle” is a CD that needs to be explored, not your average beats, “not your average killer pimp medley’s.” I didn’t see him coming and that’s why it was so heavy. From the opening line off the first track “Up South” I felt compelled to listen on. It’s amazing how mainstream somehow assumes inferiority is anything out of its flow.

The beats on this CD are truly unique, not since “Phrenology” have I been so satisfied by the use of instruments. “Only your Life” is an interesting track, solid lyrical content mixed with some simple well placed scratching and a nice classical guitar. The thing that separates this track for me is the ridiculous flute. A Flute? Yes a Flute you ignorant fuck, beat machines aren’t the only instruments used these days. With that out of my system, the uniqueness of the instruments on this CD and especially on this track has alone made me a Bavu Blakes fan. It’s nice once and a while to get a break from the plague of Neptunism.

All right beats covered, can this man rhyme? His flow is slick and his dialogue is conscious.”Yawnin’ at other folks who utter quotes the next man used, your not inspired, oppressed, involved, enthused.”
Yo, it needs to be said, hip-hop is stuck, for the moment, in a commercial rut. Money sells, cars sell and women just happen to look nice lying naked on both. It’s a shame and it’s tainting the industry. But for the moment the masses have spoken. It’s a welcome relief to get a breath of fresh air and hear rap conscious beyond materialism. Mind you if your looking for club bangers this isn’t your CD. If you are looking for solid lyrics with some truly unique instrumental stylings “Create and Hustle” is a good piece to add to your collection. The sickest track from a lyrical standpoint on this CD is “I”. There is something really distinctive with the flow and lyrical content on this track that kept me replaying it over and over again. I’d say without a doubt this song is the summit of “Create and Hustle”.

Now for some criticism. I felt that Create and Hustle was too short, when the CD ended on my first listen through I was like ‘what the fuck, where did the rest go?’ I wanted more! Now length is not always important to me, sometimes rappers try and lengthen CD’s with quality and end up spewing out filler tracks like a bad night at the bar. But I believe Bavu could have laid down some more quality tracks without jeopardizing the quality of this filler deficient gem. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe I’m greedy, maybe I’m right, but at least Bavu Blakes did one important thing on this chill ass CD and that was leaving me wanting more.
