Depending on how you want to gauge it, we’re witnessing the fourth incarnation of Lil Wayne. First there was the borderline kiddie-rapper. Then there was the circa 2005 version, who made many listeners begrudgingly admit that Wayne suddenly started rhyming his ass off. And of course, there was superstar Weezy—endorser of Auto-tune, impregnator of Pop culture vixens and a man prone to the occasional drug-addled haze, a faux Rock album, and still rhyming his ass off if he felt like it. Through each version, even Lil Wayne’s detractors have secretly hoped for that complete, signature album where he reconciled the superior lyrical abilities found on his earlier mixtapes with the chart success he’s found on his last few solo outings. Unfortunately, Tha Carter IV is not that album. The fact that most of us have spent a week debating what the fallout will be from Wayne’s Jay-Z diss on “It’s Good” 
instead of the album’s wins was probably a bad omen.
None of this is to say Wayne’s most recent offering in the “Carter” series won’t wind up as the country’s number one album, and potentially spawn a handful of hit singles. If some of Wayne’s peers had made this album, they’d be looking at their creative high water mark. But after lyrically standing toe-to-toe with the likes of Andre 3000, Jay-Z and demolishing other artist’s best singles via his mixtapes, the stakes and expectations have been raised for Wayne. This time around, he occasionally pushes the envelope with “How To Hate” and the Bruno Mars assisted “Mirror.” The latter is a concept track—a rarity from Wayne these days—and the former finds the Weezy and T-Pain duo flipping the script and lamenting over women that have done them wrong.
That’s not to say some of these conceptual risks don’t fall flat on their face. The incredibly popular yet atrocious “How To Love,” finds Wayne exploring one of the few genres he hasn’t tried to crossover into yet—acoustic soul. He’s surprisingly on key as a vocalist, successfully ditching the Auto-tune crutch he used on “Lollipop.” But the Kenny Chesney vibe and corny concept of reforming one of the chicks he just asked to “jump up on that dick and do a full split” a few songs before rings hollow. If you’re not a die-hard Weezy fan, you may constantly find yourself trying to reconcile that opinion with the fact that “How To Love” is the eighth most popular song in the country.
Drake and Wayne confirm that they do indeed have enough chemistry to pull off a joint album with “She Will,” but they both revisit old territory as opposed to taking any risks or offering any substance. Weezy recycles his metaphor about life and/or karma being some type of female twice within the opening 45 seconds; then he makes one of his many references to cunilingus, all while continually patting himself on the back for pedestrian bars and punchlines.
On what is Lil Wayne’s ninth studio album, there’s very little of the spontaneity you would expect from someone whose calling card is non-written, unrehearsed, free-associative rhymes. The double-time and drawn out cadences he experimented with back on “Fuck Wit Me Now” or even as recent as “Money On My Mind” have been abandoned for a staccato flow accented by the ever-popular hashtag rap. Thematically, Tha Carter IV is sequenced better than any of its predecessors except for Tha Carter II. The sonic backdrops from Bangladesh, Detail and Polow Da Don compliment each other well without getting monotonous. But you won’t find any surprises like “Shooter” or “Let The Beat Build.”
Granted, you don’t buy a Lil Wayne album hoping for spiritual enlightenment, but even previous moments like “Tie My Hands” are conspicuously absent. At the very least, Wayne earns cool points for having a who’s who of Hip Hop royalty rhyme his interlude and massive “Outro” posse cut without actually joining in on the fun. It’s a flippant move, but the pairing of Tech N9ne and Andre 3000, is nearly worth the purchase price alone. In the end, it’s almost symbolic because the Wayne who once rhymed hammock with sandwich and previously held court with these top-tier emcees isn’t here this time around.
Wack album, except the two singles, everything is flat, flow is getting worse on every album.

Both reviews are kinda off…Red should be a 3.5 and Carter IV should be a 2.5. I could care less for Game but the Red album looks like the Chronic compared to Carter IV.

Coming from a fan (not a stan) of Lil Wayne, and a person who wants to see him succeed and be a great artist, I have to say that this album is mediocre. It’s no where near as good as C2. The best songs on the album is She Will, and the best verses belong, hands down, to Nas and Tech (with Busta coming in third, then a few of Wayne’s, then 3stacks, and Shyne coming in at 467th). Like I said , I used to be a big fan of Wayne (all the way back to his verses on Project Bitch and before), so I’m not hating. This album is just ok, not terrible, not great. I feel like Wayne can do a LOT better and drop a classic, I just don’t know if he ever will.

Man I think your comment doesn’t make any sense. It’s not that people don’t like Wayne or The Game. Its the particular album that they are rating. So there is nothing wrong with critiqing it. Who knows Soulja Boy next album may be good or not. History suggest not but we would never know unless we listen to it. Thats why we rate it. I look for originality and creativity when it comes to music and how you put it together. I also look for how good your content is. Lil Wayne lacks in these areas. He’s a good rapper but his album is simply not good. It’s nothing that make me go damn…now thats a hot album. He’s mainstream. Little Brother, Tribe, Dre, etc..all had SLAMMIN albums. This is not one of them.

I usually have very low expectations for Lil Wayne and this managed to perform even lower. Only reason it is getting 2 stars is because of Interlude and Outro, where he ironically doesn’t rap.
It’s one of the worst albums this year. For a super-star artist self-proclaimed “best rapper alive” to put out this mess is a disgrace and not tolerable.
I would also like to add that this album makes Watch The Throne look better. And that’s not a compliment towards WTT.

I tried to force myself to like it but it’s just not doing it for me.

This is a very poor album with no real standout tracks. I dont understand why people are comparing it to R.E.D but since we are pitting them against eachother, I feel that game came out with a better album with a few very good trcks. Saying that though, having listened to it a few times I find myself skipping over half the songs which doesnt make for a classic album. These 2 overated artists need to take a step back and look at how lesser known musicians such as Kendrick lamar are making consistantly good music. For the record I can still listen to section 80 all the way through without even considering skipping a track.
Final point…how long till we see a wayne and game track dissing jay?? I give it a week! with the mediocre sales of R.E.D. and the poor reviews of tha carter, a bit of publicity may help them both.

I completely agree with HipHopDX on this one. One expects a Wayne album to be something bizarre. Usually he tries different flows and different subjects. Weezy takes risks. None of albums are the same. Yeah he talks about sex, money, and drugs on every album. However, his flow is different on each album. Then he tries different types of songs on every album. He tries different beat tempos and song structures. This album is more laid back. However, I believe it is he most complete albume. Has has more songs with meaningful messages than any other album. His flow is still on point. When I first heard the album I was disappointed because I was expecting a certain type of Wayne. But thats the point. He doesn’t want you to figure him. Then he will be mundane. He takes risks. He wants each album to have a different flavor. Its not his most energetic, flashy, or clever album. However,I believe this is his best and most complete album yet. 5 stars haters!

6 outta 10..His punchlines land flat more often than not, but they are generally better than Carter 3 but worse than Carter 2. In term of quality and musical taste I think this album is right in between those two. Not as commercial as 3 or as raw as 2. But what really doesn’t help him is tracks like Interlude and Outro (which including Intro are one long song) where feature artist like Tech Nine, Andre 3000, NAS, Busta and Bun B outshine him badly on his own album and highlight the difference between pure spitters and an average rapper. I guess he realized this himself tho and strange but smartly he doesn’t rap on the tracks that feature them oddly enough?? The last thing hurting this album is the his fake gangsterism. It’s hard to swallow when we all know he’s been running with millionaires since his young teens, brought his supposed (late 20’s?) blood affiliation (last I heard you get jumped in gangs) and the fact that skateboards, vans, tight jeans and kissing men just isn’t that gangster where I’m from…but all that aside its still an overall entertaining album and the production kept me interested.

when the carter series first dropped, i saw a kid really turn his skills up, and focus on being the best rapper he could be. first 2 carter albums were dope. if you like hot beats, and hot flows, with entertaining vocals, you’ll like those albums.
i don’t like what wayne has become. shallow. predictable. he’s a caricature of himself at this point. everything is a set up to a punchline, thematically, dude is bankrupt. drake has rubbed off on him, and the change has been negative. still some spots, where weezy entertains. the verse he actually disses jay with, is dope. the diss is weak. but the way he styled that verse, with the melody, half singing, to straight spitting, was dope. that’s the wayne i like. how to love, joint with t-pain, unbelievably bad.
i don’t know if it’s cuz wayne is sober, if wayne lost some writing help, or lost his focus. but he’s lost a lot of juice. this is the weakest carter by far IMO. considering the time he had, this shit is weak. he has mixtapes better than this. i also don’t really hear any HITS on the album. not that radio won’t force feed them to the masses either way, just found it interesting.
some wayne fans dickride anything he does. i’m a wayne fan, but i’ll tell you straight up when he does some sucka shit (guitar wayne, kissing baby wayne, spandex wayne, sign drake, etc.)
best thing about this album is tech n9ne getting a joint with 3 stacks. no other way that happens, but lil wayne comin with the bag of money. nas kills his spot. hopefully wayne gets his footing back, if not, he had a hell of a run. i’d give this 2.5/5.

Someone who isn’t biased and actually writes a review that sums up weezy and this album perfectly? Holy shit. A+ man. I respect Wayne fine. When I heard Lock n Load years ago, I was hooked on Weezy for a bit. Then C3 came out and it was meh, especially compared to I & II, and I don’t hate Weezy, but being from an area close to KC MO when I heard Tech N9ne and Benjamin on that track that didn’t even include Wayne, it just solidified that I had no real favorite songs by Wayne himself on the album. Not a good album, but people are hating like crazy. Weezy had a good run, but with no real ambition he’s probably gonna fall off here soon and the Ninna is gonna takeover.
…or so I hope.

Overall though this album was mediocre but a descent listen. Nas verse killed every wayne verse throughout the album in my opinion. Better then carter 3? in my opinion yes C3 was an overrated album like 5 songs on it were good and like 2 were really good. I cant say anything bad about the similes and metaphors wayne uses though, I like his play of words not alot of rappers do that. Anyways about Carter IV, it wasn’t horrible, and it wasn’t great. At least there were a few great songs: Interlude, President Carter, It’s Good, Outro and (surprisingly) Mirror. She Will and How To Hate were nothing amazing but at least tolerable. The rest were skips. So 2.5/5, but I’ll round it up to a 3 for the well done production. 3/5.

1) C4 has more energy.
2) Wayne was more versatile and creative.
3) WTT just drags on like a party that should have ended at 4 a.m. but the host keeps asking you to stay. C4 actually works time wise.
4) Wayne has confidence and it shows in his rhymes and guest appearances. He got the best of the best without being afraid they would steal the show from Andre 3000 to Nas.

Like I said, WTT has the hottest track, but C4 is the hottest experience. Otis is best song, but Lil Wayne keeps you trying to figure out what type of beat and flow will be next. I would give C4 a higher rating because after a while I became bored with WTT. Cut off a few tracks and maybe its could be a classic. It didn’t come anywhere near Nas/Marley’s album (so where’s all this substanc) and I’m sure another two star pairing will offer a better colab album this year.

This album is actually not BAD, its just AVERAGE. Minus “How to Hate”, “So Special” and the played out singles “6’7”, “John”, and “How to Love”, its actually pretty dope. VERY limited subject matter (One of the least substantive albums from a rapper on waynes level ive heard), but Waynes flow and wordplay are on point. The production, though typical, is pretty crisp.

How to Love is one of the best tracks on C4. Its the ONLY song that has a real concept lol. Everything else is just a punchline fest with no purpose.

The reason why everyone is making a big deal about this is becuz Wayne failed our generation. Jay-Z, Nas, and Em did their part to move the genre forward, just as Big and Pac did before them, and as Rakim, Slick Rick, Krs, and Kane did before them. Wayne is by far the most popular rapper of this gen. With that power he can do great things, but he chose to spit on it. Kanye is the only rapper from this gen dropping that real shit.
Luckily, the next generation looks pretty promising with guys like Cole, Kendrick, Cudi, J. Electronica, Curren$y, and even Drake putting out quality material.

The Documentary is bound to generate some criticisms, and it should. He continues the awful tradition of when-thugs-love (a la “21 Questions,” “Karma”), with “Special.” The song is complete with an oh-so-poetic hook “I want you to know you’re special.” While not particularly bad, the beat on “Where I’m From” does not meet the high standards of the rest of the LP and could have easily been left off. And while it may seem like nitpicking, his constant name-dropping gets on the nerves after a few listens – it just needs to go. I swear he must say Dre’s name about 30 times on the album. I’m sure I won’t be the only one to say so, but it is hard not to wish a better emcee got blessed with these beats like, say, Ras Kass – especially when you consider the absolute lack of dues The Game has paid to this point. The guy hasn’t even been rhyming 2 years, and it isn’t like he that good to warrant the instant superstardom. Still, that doesn’t change how good this album is. Two weeks into the year and it is easily the best album of 05 – and I wouldn’t be all that surprised if it is still being called that 11 months from now. A lot of people are going to be playing The Game.
The Only Better Album From ’05 that i can think of is Common’s “Be” and Kanye’s “Late Registration” But “The Documentary” Is Classic.

I downloaded this album when it leaked, and i was disappointed. for a second i thought it wasnt the real album and i had downloaded some bullshit. I thought the songs would at least be as good as “She Will”, which I didn’t think was that good. Why Asian girls go for white men (MOST of the time) is a complex issue; but I think there are a few basic reasons for why this is so common (these are only my opinions except for the stats). One is, men from wealthier, more powerful nations and races will snatch up women from weaker races and nations. For example, in America, more Native American women married white men, rather than the other way around. From a biological and socioeconomic standpoint, women go for money and security. Another thing is, most East Asian women don’t have a strong cultural pride as Hispanic, black, Middle Eastern, and Indian/Pakistani women do. I see Indians/Pakistanis and Hispanics proudly speaking their languages to each other all over college campuses. But Asians, meh, I guess the international students do, but the ones born here don’t do it as much, like the girl in the video who said “when my ex speaks Mandarin, he sounds very gay to me.†Most East Asian women love white culture and desperately want to be a part of it. Asian culture is very patriachal and puts alot of pressure on Asian women to be sweet, humble, submissive (especially around their controlling husbands, fathers, and meddling Mothers-in law), beautiful (aka: look as caucasion as possible), highly educated, an expert chef, and constantly pregnant with boys. Marrying a white man and rejecting Asian guys is a way of rejecting a culture that rejected them first and is a way of finally escaping an oppressive culture and easily assimilating into the liberty, loving majority. White, western raised men, grew up in a culture that (at least nowadays) looked upon women as equals and have been courting/dating longer than Asian cultures have (Asian cultures have only recently started shedding arranged marriages) thus they are generally better with women and relationships. They know how to not be too shy around girls or (as is the case with Indian/Pakistani guys) seem too desperate and needy either. Asian women (having been raised in an oppressive society) are experts in being gentle, humble, and submissive. This highly feminine sweetness can be very appealing to white men who are surrounded by white women who (because of the feminist movement and modern cultural views) in a sense have forgotten how to be women and aggresively demand equality in marriage rather selflessly serve their husbands as Asian women are trained to do. Asian women are thrilled at the prospective of having a husband who actually appreciates this about them, rather than take it for granted as Asian men do, because Asian men are generally used to it. The humbleness of Asian women, and the appreciativeness of white guys creates a perfect combination. According to statistics: white-white couples have a fifty percent divorce rate, Asian men/white women have a seventy to eighty percent divorce rate, and Asian women/ white men have a twenty to thirty percent divorce rate. Although Asian marriages last longer than western marriages, we have to admit, the few good western marriages that do exist have a special depth that Asian marriages usually lack. Women of all cultures crave that, especially Asian women, who don’t want to end up like their parents- just “tolerating†each other instead of being truly in love and having a best friend for life. Hollywood, romance novels, and other love stories usually portray white men as the handsome (preppy) ultra cool hero who sweeps the woman off of her feet. Usually, Asian guys are the nerdy side kicks. Indian guys have comical accents, medicore/below average looks, goofy personalities (Mean Girls, The Simpsons, Harold and Kumar, etc) and Chinese guys are computer nerds, math geeks, creepy serial killers, or just plain weird (William Hung). Many Asian women (unfortunately) buy into this stereotype that white guys are cool and Asians guys are silly, feminine nerds. The irony is, Asian women on the other hand, are viewed by Hollywood and society as beautiful and exotic (rather than nerdy and geeky). White society has a different standard of beauty when it comes to Asian people (men and women). You’ll rarely see a truly hot Asian girl with a white guy. I saw a pair of Pakistani sisters once: the older sister was short, dark, talked like a trucker, and had a large nose. Her younger sister was thin, tall, porcelin white, and had silky straight hair. The younger sister is the ideal Pakistani beauty, and yet her older sister (who Pakistani guys wouldn’t even look twice at) married a gorgeous, tall white lawyer. Speaking of sexual attraction, human beings are generally attracted to people who are different from them- but not too different. White skin and black skin is too different. But Asian and white is different, but close enough. Because white people think Asian women are exotic and lovely, and because Asian women are so enamored by white culture (including white looks) the thought of having a child with blonde hair and other caucasion features is appealing to them. And also, if you’re a minority living in another country, the odds are against you that the “purity†of your bloodline will last a long time. If you are a new immigrant (Asian/black/hispanic) living in America, within a few generations, your bloodline WILL get mixed in with other races. If you have a problem with that, go back to your home country, because that is an undeniable fact. Women (modern, open minded ones at least) usually aren’t as concerned about bloodline and preserving their heritage as men are. Thus, you’ll see more minority women with white men than the reverse. The only exception is black women/ white men which is a whole other story, and will require another blog entry. Finally, minorities usually produce their own little cliques when they live in another country. They are encouraged to see everyone in the group as their brothers and sisters. Therefore, Asian women will look at Asian guys as brothers in this strange new land, and see white guys as exotic, potential romantic partners. I have an Asian female friend who said she wouldn’t date Asian guys because “its like Im dating my brother.†These are only my guesses. Feel free to reply!

Until he actually focuses on what he’s saying, I don’t consider him a top 5 alive rapper. This is the album that got me interested in Lil Wayne, He is a Poetic Genius plus the beats are Dark as Fuck.
