Game – Purp & Patron (Mixtape Review)

If there’s one thing Jayceon Taylor succeeds at, it’s not caring about what anyone else thinks. However, it took his Purp & Patron mixtape for him to finally drive that point home musically. This offering from Game is perhaps his riskiest-albeit-brilliant work to date. While Game occasionally tinkered with manipulations of samples (i.e. “One Blood” with Junior Reid), this time around his focus is more direct, the collaborations are well played and his lyrics are succinct.

Tracks like “The Kill” , where Cool & Dre flip La Roux’s haunting vocal sample, show how Game acclimates himself lyrically to the tone of his production. The RZA-produced “Heart Breaker” (now pulled due to publishing reasons) shows Game flipping syllables like a champ. If Brake Lights was Game’s pure Hip Hop delivery mixtape, then Purp & Patron is his experimental one. That’s not to say Game shies away from traditional Rap. He even pays homage to it on “History” with a legendary line up of Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, and KRS-One with the poignant hook, “KRS One spits like / Doug Fresh beatbox like / And you know that Kane spit like / And that’s the reason Game spits like.” “Ferrari Lifestyle” with Fabolous and “Taylor Made” with Wiz Khalifa show Game’s dexterity in the midst of other skillful rappers.

While the double-disc Purp & Patron is the length of two LPs, it’s still not his long-awaited fourth album. If Game is giving music like this away for free, imagine what R.E.D. will sound like?

DX Consensus: “Free Album” (the highest possible praise for a mixtape).

    1. Yeah so…best mixtape in a long time
      Period
Not many rappers do this now(not including NEW rappers…J. Cole, B.o.b., Big Sean, etc. etc.)
The Game(I will call him that until R.E.D. gets more concrete) is a KNOWN artists
      3 major albums
      And he releases THIS?!?!?!
      This is amazing music
      For free!
Who was the last artists to do this much new music at this level with this deep and diverse of content for free?

    2. This mixtape shows game’s flow, lyrical ability, deliviry on this mixtape…..a Hip Hop head would enjoy brake lights thouugh then purp and patron but if u like Hip-hop on a new tape then listen to history, the ocean, the kill, ferrari lifestyle, supastar and thats it. Its an average mixtape but more better with qualityt to suit it as a average album. Its decent put into a well together tracklist. Good job game.

    3. game got a lot of criticism recently for what seemed like falling off (me included).
but no doubt he’s come back strong. he always causes doubt but always delivers when it gets close to album release time. keep it up

    4. Game got the Best Mixtape of 2011 already I really dont think another mixtape will be better than this.

      1. nikka west coast died long time ago when pac died yall nikkaz wont be saved till the second coming back of jesus.p.b.u.h. and even than its a question mark.

    5. this mixtape was so good its getting an album review from hiphopdx, a mixtape getting an album review, now that alone is saying something

      1. that’s just you, compared to nas, game has more of a drawl in his vocals and his voice is heavier.

nas has a qicker rapid fire style.

they both have smokey raspy voices tho that really do sound alike.

      2. He was pointing to the fact that Nas had written Game’s verse…which is very possible…however Nas had texted Game saying “Yo its Esco. Two words. The Kill” So NAs was definitely feeling the joint…AND TO ALL YOU HATERS…shut up..just shut up…DX should disable the comment forum because nobody gives a fuck about all of your hating ass bullshit…if you want to hate…go follow Sammy Faggams on tour. IM OUT

    6. I’m just pissed that no one trusts Game. If he does release a few week joints everybody will say “he’s not dope anymore. he’s fell the fuck out”, but the truth is he always dropped really good albums and dope mixtapes. So PEOPLE, stop judging and wait for the album. You won’t be dissapointed

      1. 100% True. Everyone talks about the documentary, but a lot of people feel the Doctor’s Advocate was better. To me, that’s the Game’s “It Was Written,” and was highly slept on. Even L.A.X. was about 3 songs short from near classic status. And funny how people say Game has no singles, when there are several songs on this mixtape that could easily blow. Put R. Kelly on that song Farrari Lifestyle with Fab, and that could blow up.

    7. I listened to this whole mixtape last night with my friend. Neither one of us liked it dat much. It’s definitely not a bad mixtape, but I feel it’s greatly overrated. I really like dat song History though.

    8. the funny thing is when red drops people are gonna say wow not that good the purp n patron mixtape is so much better, yeah because the labels will put songs on the album that they like not the ones that hip hop fans like.aside from that lost song of the hangover is the shit best of all

    9. The Game, Ross, Lupe, Kanye and Lil Wayne are acutlly the only “new/hot” rappers left that care about their craft and want to make good music so i will always check fro them. Not a big lil wayne fan but at least he wants to be a great rapper. All the other “commercial artists” are just trying to coast and cash in (50, T.I., Jay, Snoop, Bob, ect)

    10. Not really a big game fan. But the mixtape was ok. Id prefer to kick back and listen to K-dee, maybe some Goldy, sum keith murray, D.O.C, organized konfusion….i like to dwell in tha 90’s. But some of the new stuff is aaight….

    11. You know what I thought everything Game was released for RED album was wack, so going into this mixtape I wasn’t expecting much, but this mixtape was good and now my hopes are back up for this album. Don’t disapoint Game

      1. mad cuz yo man federali fifty is shoveling snow instead of putting out fire like this nigga game is..getting websites closed down with his cyber policing ass…AGAIN,…FIRE!

    12. i gotta comment on this one i heard this shit is crazy game the shit puttin out real albums n mixtapes. yes this right here is better then alot of this dudes albums. the game is the man

    13. Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!Dope Dope Dope !!!!

    14. It’s a good mixtape but in my opinion The Documentary is still the game’s best work with L.A.X. being second. All subjective though, just wasn’t feeling this mixtape. Maybe I gotta spin it a few more time to capture the albums full effect.

    15. I got the NO DJ version of these mixtapes. It doesnt have all the tracks that the 2 separate mixtapes have, but it has 80% of it.
Anyways, I love THE GAME, but GAME is good too. He changed up his style a bit, but he is still hardcore.
The samples used in this mixtape are insane. They sound really good.
My favorite tracks are The Kill, Children’s Story and Burn NY.
