Yasiin Bey has blessed fans with some new bars out of the blue by spitting a freestyle over Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar‘s “Like That.”
The Brooklyn rap legend — formerly known as Mos Def — was filming himself on Instagram Live on Tuesday (May 21) when he decided to kick an impromptu freestyle over the Rodney-O & Joe Cooley-sampling beat.
Fittingly, Bey put his own spin on the “Big Three” debate which Kendrick himself rapped about on the original song, reigniting his long-simmering feud with Drake and sparking a brief battle with J. Cole.
“Greedy, seedy and creepy/ Corny, horny and boring/ Bougie, goofy and moody/ Foolish, ruthless and clueless/ Variations on a petty big three/ A whole lot to look at but not much to see,” he rapped.
“Like That” is a fitting beat choice considering Yasiin Bey’s recent criticism of Drake.
Earlier this year, he called the 6 God’s music “pop” and snarkily described it as the perfect soundtrack to a shopping trip.
“Drake is pop to me,” he said on The Cutting Room Floor podcast. “In the sense like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song, it feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping. Or shopping with an edge, in certain instances.”
Drake initially responded by posting an old interview clip of Method Man while writing: “What umi say again? Lemme shine my light king don’t change up now,” referencing Bey’s classic song “Umi Says.”
The video in question saw the Wu-Tang Clan legend explaining what Hip Hop means to him.
“Hip Hop is a culture,” he says in the clip. “It’s a way of life, the way you dress, the way you talk, the way you walk. It’s the breakdancing, rhymes, stage show, DJ, mixing and scratching, the wordplay. That’s Hip Hop.”
Drake later fired back at the Black Star MC again by calling him a “Bohemian Bucket,” referencing the Toronto slang for “crackhead.”
His comment was posted under a video of Canadian rapper/executive Kofi “Friday” Carmichael claiming that Bey married a stranger from Toronto during an ecstasy bender in 2005.
Yasiin Bey later addressed Drake directly on Instagram Live, calling him a “talented MC” but challenging him to put more substance in his music.
“Drake, if you’d like to speak to me directly, you can at any point,” he said. “I reached out to [Dave] Chappelle, actually reached out to you. I DM’d you.
“You are a very talented MC, but for me, I require more of myself and others than just talent or charm or charisma — particularly in times of urgent crisis.
“And what I would like to see in terms of creators or creative people in the world, as it relates to our culture, is for people to connect with us beyond the jukebox or the dance floor.”
He added: “A fair-weather friend can hardly be called a friend at all. The people who party with you — that’s cool. But will they show up for you when you’re at the triage?”
Oh, now its okay to kill Drizzy.
Mos Def is another one of those weirdos that I learned was lame when I grew up. I know he had a history of hating on black women and putting white ones on a pedestal.
WTF are you talking about. Provide links or no one will believe you. He has been quite the opposite his whole career my dude.
You’re so full of shit. There’s nothing he’s done in his music or in interviews to prove the bullshit you’re saying. I’m willing to bet money you’re a white boy pretending like you care about black women, hoping retards believe you. Go play catch with a loaded shotgun. Your husband will appreciate it.
You can go look for yourself dummy. I just take notes on these clowns when they reveal themselves.
Stop idolizing these lame ass rappers. Black women have spoken on how he gets down with them. Not my fault that you fell for his public facing image. It ain’t hard to find if you want to know.
This guy needs to pay his child support. Try to leave the country with his own passport he got called out by the countries he was in. All to avoid child support. What a loser
This nicca is both a high paid musician and actor. Child support wouldn’t be shit to him. Wtf dumbass bullshit are you saying in a pathetic attempt to change public opinion on him? You must really think that either he’s reading this or his fans will change their opinion on him because a worthless nobody like you wrote something on a hip hop site. Put the phone down, you’re lunch break at mcdonald’s is almost over.
To be fair mos def was respectfully hating on Drake before the 20 v 1 and he’s one of the only guys along with Kendrick that could actually ether a top tier chatty patty lyricist like Drizzy so he gets my respect.i like all them. Jesus loves them tho.
“A whole lot to look at but not much to see” is a pretty damn good line that sums up the situation.
