Tyrese Announces Sequel To “Baby Boy”

Released over 15 years ago, the film Baby Boy has remained relevant in pop culture long after it hit movie theaters.

And as the film quickly approaches the two-decade mark, Tyrese has revealed on social media that a sequel to Baby Boy is in the works. The crooner and star of Baby Boy shared the news on Instagram earlier this week.

He also gave a subtle nod to the film’s director, John Singleton.

“Sequel to Baby Boy coming soon….. #BabyBoyComingOfAge shout to @johnsingleton,” Tyrese wrote in a caption to his video, which shows a clip from Baby Boy.

Outside of Tyrese’s Instagram post, no other details on a sequel to Baby Boy have surfaced.

Released in theaters in 2001, Baby Boy chronicled the chaotic life of 20-year-old Joseph “Jody” Summers. In addition to Tyrese, the film also starred Omar Gooding, Taraji P. Henson, and Ving Rhames.

News of a Baby Boy sequel comes weeks after another iconic film, Coming To America was rumored to be receiving its own sequel. Despite Eddie Murphy claiming to be unaware of a second installment, it was later reported that Paramount hired the original writers from Coming To America for a follow-up.

    1. But why though?
Don’t get me wrong, Baby Boy is a pretty good movie, and I tend to think almost all hood movies are either incredibly stupid for glamorizing unrealistic levels of decadence (like State Property 1 & 2 or those old No Limit movies) or too pretentiously “inspiring” (like Coach Carter), with very few that don’t fall into one of these 2 categories, and of course I’m speaking the past 20 years, somehow Baby Boy managed to be not only watchable but very entertaining to me, granted that its probably been over 10 years since I’ve watched it, but I liked it. I don’t see what a sequel could possibly add to the plot.

      1. I can see your point…all good points, but you have to imagine that there are tons of different ways to go with that plot that could make it interesting. At the end, he finally appeared to be on his way to “growing up” and becoming a man, but what happened next? Will Jody in his mid 30’s be a man, being an example for some other “baby boys” around him? Or will he have regressed and be in his “second childhood?” We know how many 30 something baby boys there are out here. It’s crazy. Maybe he’s on that. Maybe his homeboy P is just coming home from a bid and he’s helping him get his life together, because we know damn well he was headed for the pen sooner or later. I think there’s a lot of places to go with it that would make a good movie.

    2. Hood chit doe! Not hooder den eastsidaz movie but it was aight! Who you loc??? Classic tray deee doe!

    3. It will do good in theaters if it is done, because since the first baby boy was made Tyrese has become a bigger star thanks to transformers and fast and furious, henson has become a A listers, would be a cheap made movie that could hit big in box office so might as well do it.
