Tyler, The Creator has issued a barrage of apologies, including one for hiding his sexuality, on his new song, “Sorry Not Sorry.”
On Wednesday (March 29), the Grammy-winning artist dropped the repentant track and its accompanying music video on YouTube as he continues to build excitement for his forthcoming project Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale.
At the beginning of the video, DJ Drama opens the track by continuously screaming, “I’m sorry!” which is a prelude to the amount of beg-pardons Tyler drops throughout the desert-set visual.
Tyler, The Creator then apologizes to the men and women who he lied to about his sexuality. Many people believe he came out as gay on his 2017 LP Flower Boy.
“Sorry to the freaks I led on/ Who thought their life was gonna change ’cause I gave ’em head on/ But instead, I sped off, yeah, I know I’m dead wrong/ Sorry to the guys I had to hide/ Sorry to the girls I had to lie to, who ain’t need to know if I was by the lake switchin’ tides, too,” he raps over the sample-heavy track.
Tyler also extends apologies to his mother, his “old friends,” “the fans who said I changed,” his ancestors and even those whose pronouns he gets wrong.
He also appears alongside multiple “old Tylers” from throughout his career, who serve as antagonists to his protagonist perspective about his present-day mentality.
“Sorry I don’t wanna bro down, sorry I don’t know your pronouns/ I don’t mean no disrespect, but damn, we just met, calm the fuck down/ Oh, I’m out of touch and I’m a jerk? A bank account could never match my worth/ I’m sorry, Mother Earth, polluted air with chemicals and dirt/ These cars ain’t gonna buy and drive themselves, what the hell you think I work for?” he continues.
At the conclusion of the video, the former Odd Future frontman decides to attack one of his former selves and kill them in a vicious fashion while saying, “Fuck ’em” in lieu of what felt like another apology.
“Sorry Not Sorry” is the second song that Tyler, The Creator has released ahead of Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale, which drops Friday (March 31). He announced the project and dropped the first single “Dogtooth” earlier this week.
“CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST WAS THE FIRST ALBUM I MADE WITH ALOT OF SONGS THAT DIDNT MAKE THE FINAL CUT,” he explained of the project on Twitter. “SOME OF THOSE SONGS I REALLY LOVE, AND KNEW THEY WOULD NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY, SO IVE DECIDED TO PUT A FEW OF THEM OUT.”
Inspired by DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz mixtape series, Call Me If You Get Lost originally dropped in June 2021 and boasted appearances from Lil Wayne, NBA YoungBoy, Lil Uzi Vert, Pharrell, Brent Faiyaz and more.
Much like Tyler’s previous effort, IGOR, the free-wheeling project topped the Billboard 200 and won Best Rap Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
