Tyler, The Creator wants to apologize to Eminem in person for his nearly 15-year-old critique of the Detroit legend’s 2010 album, Recovery.

The Odd Future rapper stopped by Mav Carter’s Mavericks podcast recently for a chat that was published on Wednesday (August 14).

While discussing Em, Tyler noted that he hated Recovery when it first came out and went so far as to post on social media about how bad he felt it was. But it wasn’t until earlier this year when he watched a show that educated him on addictions that he totally changed his perspective.

“After watching [Painkiller on Netflix], I felt so bad about those tweets and things like that because thinking from his perspective, someone like me publicly saying that stuff and him getting off drugs and being clean and getting to a point in his life that that’s behind him and me implying that this shit is wack – he probably felt like I was attacking him,” Tyler said. “I thought I was like I was just like, ‘I don’t like the music.’ He was in a different part of his life and probably felt like I was attacking him.

“And now I feel so bad about saying that stuff because my perspective was so limited. And I love him, that dude taught me how to rap. I learned how to put words together in rhythm because of some of the Eminem stuff I was hearing and story telling and things like that. So after watching that show a few months ago, that gave me perspective and I felt so terrible about some of the things I said about the Recovery album because I realized that was a big step.

“It meant a lot to him and my fucking young stupid ass was like, ‘I wanna hear “Same Song & Dance”! I loved The Eminem Show!’ But he’s not there anymore. I felt terrible. If I ever see him, I wanna tell him that in person.”

And while he’s long credited Eminem with inspiring him and Odd Future as a whole, Tyler, The Creator hasn’t been above critiquing his fave in the past.

While talking to Rick Rubin for his Broken Record podcast a few years back, Tyler noted that Em didn’t exactly have an ear for choosing good beats.

“Some people who hear a smooth beat like, ‘I’m gonna fuckin’ yell on it! I’ma do this,’” he starts. “They’re more thinking of saying cool shit rather than making a good song … Eminem picked some of the worst beats ever.”

He quickly added, “His energy and witty lines is what made the songs cool.”

Tyler was actually a target of Em’s wrath on the Kamikaze cut “Fall,” though Shady received a healthy amount of backlash for calling him a homophobic slur in the song.

The Flower Boy mastermind, however, said he wasn’t bothered by it.

“Did you ever hear me publicly say anything about that?” he told The Guardian. “Because I knew what the intent was. He felt pressured because people got offended for me. Don’t get offended for me.

“We were playing Grand Theft Auto when we heard that. We rewound it and were like, ‘Oh.’ And then kept playing.”
