Tory Lanez recently stopped by Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning to discuss a myriad of topics, including his Chixtape 5 project. At one point, the conversation pivoted to the state of rap and the Canadian artist didn’t hesitate to express his disappointment in the seemingly homogenous rap landscape.
“I look at rap right now and rap is in a horrible place,” he said. “It’s in a horrible place. You gotta look at it right now. What’s the best rap song out right now? I just feel like rap has gotten to a repetitive place. There’s just one sound right now and it sounds like it’s out of an automated box.
“There’s a lot of other dudes who I feel like come up — of course we all draw sounds and inspirations from each other, like I’ve been one of the people who’ve done that too — but at the same time, I feel like when everybody starts to sound the same … and I keep hearing the same drum and the same kick and the same snare, and the same hi-hats, the same patterns, it gets to a point where I start saying, ‘This shit’s in a bad place right now.'”
Lanez also gave credit to Young Thug who he says is responsible for “75 percent” of the “rap style that’s going on right now.”
“I don’t think we shine enough light on Thugger for that,” he added. “There’s a lot of copying of Thugger. It’s so important for him to shed light on it because of the fact that people just have been taking his style so blatantly and not showing the respect.”
Elsewhere in the interview, they discuss Lil Xan’s face tattoos, why he chose Ashanti for the album cover and more.
Watch the interview in its entirety above.
You, Drake,Migos,All the Lil rappers, Young Thug, Travis Scott, and the rest of those Autotuning Garbage Spewing retards are to blame.
Lmao all them niggas selling out shows you old ass clown haha I swear bitter people and old heads swear that since they don’t like stuff everybody else don’t smh
Yeah but where will they be in a couple years from now. The Fall Off.
The sad part is that all of those dudes and acts that you named are making crazy bread off of Hip Hop tho. So, in the end, guess who is winning? We all know money is the end goal, right? We all want to have a shit load of money so who cares about how anyone gets it. Doesn’t matter if you stripping or rapping terribly or selling drugs out here. Money is money, right?
Drake, travis and thug make quality shit, Love em or hate em. One thing if its not your taste, but theres a reason they are successful. Look outside yourself on occasion.
True but oh well, let’s try something new.
Rap is in a great place if you listen to rappers that aren’t Torrey Lanez
Amen to this comment
A “Hip Hop” interview in which a singing dude discusses an emo White rapper’s facial tattoos. Yeah. Hip Hop is OFFICIALLY DEAD. The irony will never be lost on me how an R&B dude is basically saying how dead the art of Hip Hop is. An R&B dude who tries to rap with a fake hairline is calling all of you melodic, mumble rappers out. What ya gonna do all you NBA Youngboy Stans? Look at where Desiigner ended up trying to sound like Future.
It’s time to split the genre. Hip-pop from hiphop. Tap music is pop music. Keep all that way over there. This way, you can still appreciate a hip-pop artist who is selling out shows, 1M streams on youtube, etc. No need to hate on someone making money. At the same time, we don’t have to sacrifice the art/culture. Unfortunately in today’s age, the only way to get mainstream attention is to sellout, trapout, and go mainstream. Two lanes. Champion both.
The trap sound has way overstayed it’s welcome, it’s like hearing the same song a million times.. tiresome
