Tinashe Defends Her Comments On Colorism

Singer Tinashe felt her words were taken out of context in a recent article published by The Guardian. The article — titled “If You’re A Black Singer, You’re Either Beyoncé or Rihanna” — suggested the half-Danish, half-Zimbabwean artist blamed her “color” for not feeling more welcome in black community and not being further in her career.

“There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if you’re a black woman, you’re either Beyoncé or Rihanna,” she said in the initial interview. “It’s very, very strange.

“There’s colorism involved in the black community, which is very apparent,” she continued. “It’s about trying to find a balance where I’m a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I don’t fully fit into the black community; they don’t fully accept me, even though I see myself as a black woman. That disconnect is confusing sometimes.”

Consequently, a debate on colorism kicked off on social media, prompting Tinashe to defend her position on her own Twitter account. “I was not talking about colorism in the industry,” she wrote. This is taken out of context.” She claimed she was referring to her own personal experiences growing up.

Elsewhere in the interview, Tinashe gave an update on her forthcoming album, Joyride, which she said is coming later in 2017.

“It’s not like it’s sitting in a vault locked up, it’s always getting better and improving,” she said. “I plan on doing a solid few more months recording then hopefully getting it out this year … It’s going to be great.”

    1. Black, mixed, whatever….I won’t discriminate, so hereby volunteer to eat her ass out until the early morning.

    2. Man, I always confuse Tinashe, Mila J and Teyana Taylor.

Alicia Keys, Drake, J. Cole, Mariah Carey are all half black/white. How are they accepted in the black community?

    3. This is what happens when an artist run out of hits, they start point fingers. Bitch drop a hit and you’ll see that nobody cares what color your skin is

    4. Used to rep hard for this bitch only to come to the discovery that is she is bi….what?…..FOH bitch……bet the industry is showing its back because of that ‘bi’ shit and not because you are ‘biracial’…..truth be told….im choking because of this lgb whatever bullshit agenda damn near everywhere……hell, sometimes i find myself bigging up isis……ready to expound more regarding that last line if need be.

      1. You mad cause she might be bisexual? Why do you care who she sleeps with? Certainly nobody cares who you sleep with. What’s the problem?

    5. I noticed most north americans who have a white and black parent usually still look 80% black but mixed people from south africa/zimbabwe more often look 50/50 white/black. Id guess this is cuz the african whites havent been watered down as much through processed foods, lack of physical work and general hardiness. The same way a lot of grandparents reject the grandkids who look like the opposite race of them (happens both ways) i can see those who defy the stereotype of “dominant black genes overpowering the inferior white ones” getting more stigma in the black community

    6. No shade at the girl, but her music SUCKS. Most of the girls that are pushed are light skinned/biracial … A lot of dark skinned girls can sing, but are not pushed as far as she’s been pushed. But a certain point.. the light skinned thing won’t work. Talent has to be there…even if rigged… There are dozens of black and white people that mate and have kids just for them to be pushed into the entertainment circles…. Some are rich and famous… but after awhile the jack is up. Tweet and Ashanti came out the same time, but Ashanti was pushed more , but tweet had the talent (2002 era). So no shade, but dark skinned or brown skinned girls are not pushed half as light skinned or Biracial girls.. FACTS. That’s one of the many reasons R&B sucks so goddamn bad. Look at the videos .. you can count how many dark or brown skinned girls are pushed (models, singers and all the above) .. But Alicia Keys, B and Mariah have talent …

    7. don’t worry about that small shit tinashe. ur much sexier and a much better singer them both of them hoes
