The Roots Honors Derek Jeter With “New York’s Farewell To Jeter” Video

The Roots joined MLB and the city of New York in bidding Derek Jeter, the Yankee’s all-time hits leader, a farewell.

Black Thought narrates the “New York’s farewell to Jeter” video over the backdrop of “The Fire” from the Philadelphia group’s 2010 album, How I Got Over

The rapper cites Jeter’s character, various accolades and importance to the Yankees, major league baseball, and the city of New York in the video, which also includes a scene with President Barack Obama shaking Jeter’s hand in the Yankees locker room.

In July, Jordan Brand released an ad featuring several celebrities tipping their cap to the shortstop.

Jay Z and Action Bronson Spike Lee, Phil Jackson, Jeanie Buss, Billy Crystal, Carmelo Anthony and Tiger Woods are among those who appear in the ad, which is titled RE2PECT. The 2 is a reference to Jeter’s jersey number.
