“The Get Down” Gets Shut Down On Netflix But Might Still Have A Future

With only one season under its belt, Netflix’s The Get Down has been canceled.

Variety reports reports that the Baz Luhrmann-produced series, which was separated into two parts, fell victim to low ratings and production issues. The Hip Hop-centered drama also served as one of Netflix‘s priciest endeavors, costing the streaming company over $120 million.

Baz Luhrmann offered a heartfelt statement to fans of the show, speaking on the trouble that came with balancing a film and television career, and offering some hope for the future of The Get Down.

“When I was asked to come to the center of The Get Down to help realize it, I had to defer a film directing commitment for at least two years,” Luhrmann wrote on Facebook. “This exclusivity has understandably become a sticking point for Netflix and Sony, who have been tremendous partners and supporters of the show. It kills me that I can’t split myself into two and make myself available to both productions. I feel so deeply connected to all those who I have worked and collaborated with on this remarkable experience.”

Luhrmann later hinted at the possibility of a stage show based on the series. He also offered praise to the cast of the show, those who worked behind the scenes, and the veterans of Hip Hop.

“All sorts of things have been thrown around for the future…even a stage show (can you imagine that? I can, concert version anyone? Next summer? Just saying.)…The cast of this show is unique and exceptional,” he added. “Apart from our stellar veteran actors, I can’t tell you how privileged we all felt to have found such young, new talents, many of whom are now starring in motion pictures, creating music, and taking tremendous strides in their careers.”

    1. I don’t wanna hear none of you “real hip hop” dudes say a damn thing if you didn’t watch. You guys don’t buy the albums of your “real hip hop” heroes or watch this shows.

      1. Bruh the article doesn’t say ppl don’t watch. It says they spent 120 million making the show. It’s shutting down because of cost.

        1. If people watched the cost wouldn’t matter…they’ve known it costed 120 mill since its been finished. If people watched they would continue. C’mon you’re smarter than that

          1. It’s hard to get into a show and stay with that show. when they break 12 episodes into 2 parts. With months inbetween both parts. That’s what hurt the views. Ppl got into other shows. While waiting for the other six episodes. I was all into it then I had to wait. Because the director really only wants to make movies. And it’s cost 8-11 million per episode. I think they’ll do season two with a new director and a smaller budget.

    2. You know what the problem with this series was? We was all intrigued to watch it, but the first couple of episodes were too silly. Not shit, not stupid, just silly. With all the weird Kung fu scenes and strange production. Later on it got better, and I enjoyed it, but i can see the first couple of episodes putting people off.

      1. I liked the Kung Fu shyt. Martial arts where pretty big back then. And I also love the production on the show. What I don’t like is Jaden Smith roll and when it turns into a cartoon. But I guess the cartoon part is to try and keep cost down. With is the reason why the show is shutting down… Good show overall

    3. I mean it was cool. It wasn’t GREAT. Before I watched, I sort of expected a documentary and was disappointed that it wasn’t. But when I opened up my mind, I found that it was much more cinematic and fantastical than i ever thought a hip hop film could be. It took liberties with “truth” to serve a much richer story that I ended up enjoying. That said, it was cool. it wasn’t GREAT. I can see why many “real hip hop” heads would not really relate to the fantasy part of the story.

      1. He contributes somehow. I know that’s his voice when they change scenes and that guy is on stage rapping.

    4. the excuse makes no sense. netflix isn’t a regular network, they don’t care if you can do one season after the other. arrested development took like 4 years off inbetween seasons, other shows do the same. even on cable tv they let shows do that. the real story here is nobody watched The Get Down. if it was a hit they would work around his schedule, no problem.

    5. I actually liked this show. I heard each episode was costing way to much to produce. (120 mill so far) That’s why it’s shutting down. If they can get cost down they should keep making this show. I think it’s a cool. Even tho Jaden Smith is in it. The main character reminds me of a young Drake. Always cryin over a girl. Lol it’s a cool show. Just cost to much to produce

      1. I thought the same really great show starting off a little slow for me but it got really good after the 2nd ep. I don’t understand why it cost so much to make though. They def should have worked on shaving the budget to keep the show going. I felt like it wasn’t coming back after it was only 5 episodes for part 2. It was one of my fav shows along with Power, Survivor’s Remorse,

    6. Lol, another L for Nas. His broke ass couldn’t keep up with the production costs. Whoever’s idea it was to hire a broke bum to executive produce the Let Down should be fired. King HOV’s new show will be the #1 show of the year. He’ll show Nas how it’s done.

    7. Nas Nas Nas Nas Nas All I do is follow every post about Nas cuz I want to have his cock in my mouth but I can’t let people find this out so I say I hate him and King HOV is sooo much better Nas Nas Nas Nas Nas Nas Nas Nas Nas I hate Nas
