On the 12th anniversary of his debut album The Documentary, The Game was feeling a little bit sentimental, and he took some time to thank the people who helped him get to where he is now.
In a post on Instagram from Wednesday, The Game wrote: “12 years ago today I dropped my 1st album. An album that would go on to sell 10 million copies worldwide & reshape my city & coast.”
He also reserved special praise for two men who helped make his dream come true — legendary producer Dr. Dre and friend-turned-enemy-turned-strip-club-acquaintance 50 Cent.
“I’m forever in debt to Dr. Dre for believing in my dream… [and] 50 Cent for helping push it through the final stages.”
After The Game signed to Interscope, Dr. Dre had The Game work with rising star 50 Cent and his G-Unit crew to build hype around the West Coast newcomer — a move that ended up being a stroke of genius.
The Game and 50 Cent have a long and storied history together. After 50 Cent and G-Unit worked with The Game on The Documentary, The Game ended up feuding with the Queens OG for a host of well-documented reasons — but the pair apparently buried the hatchet after a decade of dispute when The Game confirmed in late 2016 that “Ain’t nobody on that old shit.”
Also shouted out in The Game’s Instagram post were other West Coast heavyweights such as Kendrick Lamar, Ice Cube and YG, with The Game saying, “We have flourished as a rap culture.”
Twelve years on, it’s fair to say that The Documentary is a monumental album, shifting 586,000 copies in its first week and going on to sell more than 10 million units worldwide. At the time of its release, HipHopDX wrote that we wouldn’t be surprised if it was the best album released in 2005. Looking back, it has certifiably stood the test of time.
I bought that album when it first came out in 05. Dropped my CD player down a flight of stairs at my middle school and the CD fell out the CD player and broke. I went back to target THE SAME DAY and bought that CD again.
It was surely worth it, though.
I was mod at the message board of BlackWallstreet back then. I was the one that leaked the Album to that board and was kicked out the same day for that. I thought the leaked was an unofficial bootleg. But I bought my copy shortly after.
Last time i checked it was 2pac that made the west explode not snoop even though snoops best album could be credited to that day game or tyrese they just continued off of 2pacs legacy and building off what he created the gangsta shit in rap and before him it was N.W.A on the west coast last time i checked shit your 3rd generation….
Huh?? Without the Chronic and Doggystyle there would be no Death Row to even put All Eyez On Me out!! I would definitely credit NWA for the birth of West Coast rap. More specifcally I would credit NWA for Gangsta Rap and Dre for that GFunk sound.
The chronic was dr dre and i did give doggy style a tribute hell its his best album and its historic not to mention cubes material post N.W.A and all 3 of those artists/groups were tied to dr dre or N.W.A and your absolutley right N.W.A did popularize gangsta rap but games trying to say hes the one of the first ones holding up the west coast when it was already held up and permantley put on pillars and set in stone before he even started rapping its just annoying hearing game always always either doing a shout out or giving himself way too much credit
It’s my shit Rite there. 2nd yr of college bumping it on my way 2 school, work and my hustle (music). Doc2 is Kool and so is RED too. Classic!
It is good to let people how greatful you are from where you have been to where you are now. Keep up the good work Game! It won’t be long before you are going to give the same props to them when you are at the music hall of fame someday!
He left out Neighbourhood nip!
Doesnt this nigga shout out everyone in his songs tho’?? This aint news bruh.
Game would be just another dude with a million bars if it wasn’t for 50 hooks on the first album.
The songs 50 helped with aren’t even the best songs. Start from scratch, dreams, don’t need your love and like father like son would have carried the album far without the 50 cent featured songs. Sure the buzz 50 had at that time helped it in a major way but having Dre helped it more. Documentary 2 was just as good in my opinion and 50 was nowhere near that album. He was gonna be a star with or without. 50 but I can see what your saying.
He feels hurt. That’s obvious when you hear his references to fif on documentary 2 & 2.5.
Name drops everyone
That joint went plat but it did not go diamond…eff outta here!!!
10 million in the US is diamond. His did 10 mill WW. Not diamond. He did do like 5 million in the US though.
