The Game Reacts To ‘The Documentary’ Not Being Named One Of 200 Greatest Rap Albums

The Game once again feels like he’s not being given his flowers. Rolling Stone released their “200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time” list, and the Cali-bred rapper was disheartened to see his 2005 debut The Documentary didn’t make the cut.

“@RollingStone How is ‘The Documentary’ not on the list for 200 Greatest Rap Albums Of All Time?” Game wrote on Twitter on Friday (June 10). “I carried an entire coast for 20 years on the back of my 1st album. Cause I don’t walk red carpets, play dress up, smile or fake laugh at brunches I don’t count? #Drillmatic July 1.”

This is hardly the first time The Game has aired his grievances against those who haven’t GOATed him. The “Hate It Or Love It” lyricist has made some audacious claims to hype up his next project Drillmatic, including that it will solidify him and Hit-Boy as rap’s next iconic rapper-producer duo.

He declared on Instagram back in January the project would put the duo within the upper echelon of tag-teams such as Nas and DJ PremierJAY-Z and Just Blaze, and DMX and Swizz Beatz.

In January, The Game also came for Ebro Darden, T.I. and Funk Flex, who had curated a list of names they believed to be the top 50 rappers of all time. The Game’s moniker was nowhere to be found.

“@oldmanebro @funkflex & @troubleman31…… I ain’t forgot about these lists…,” The Game wrote in an Instagram caption. “#DRILLMATIC coming soon…. HURRICANE GAME LIVES y’all shoulda just threw my baby mamas in there too !!!!”

In a 2021 interview with HipHopDX, The Game lamented the lack of quality in the rap game and said his new album is about to change that.

“It fucking sucks there’s no real substance in music anymore, but we have to go through it until it’s fruitful again,” he said at the time. “Logic is working with Madlib. And of course, Kendrick and Cole, and then I’m coming back again. Shit’s coming.”

    1. I’m with him on this one. The Documentary is a classic and the replay value is still crazy even after almost 20 years. The Rolling Stone are bugging on this one.

    2. something wrong with the music never because if you ain’t happy with whats hot you go looking elsewhere. harry fraud has his shit together. go underground sure they want that record deal and believe me homey they want it bad and yes it is fucked up. there is the quality or what ever its out there.

    3. Say what you want about The Game complaining, but this album, I would consider it top 10. Probably even top 5.

    4. This is one time Game is right. There’s a lot of bulljive on that list. 2nd best gunit album behind GRODT and some of Dre’s best work

    5. Life After Death is Number One… they really tripping now. It’s a great album yes but nowhere near number one. “Illmatic” has that hands down. Why are they disrespecting The D.O.C’s “No One Can Do It Better” should be in the top 5 at least. He’s way better than The Game could ever dream to be and if it wasn’t for that car accident, he’d definitely would’ve made a more lasting impact on West Coast Hip Hop but you still can’t deny his lyrical skills and pen skills compared to anyone else during that era. He was doing things nobody else was at that time.

    6. SHIT WAS GARBAGE EVEN IN EARLY 05. ALBUM SOUNDED SO FORCED, UNORIGINAL, AND MANUFACTURED. “DRE SAID” “UNCLE SNOOP SAID” “YOU DIDN’T LISTEN TO NAS AND HEAR ABOUT IKE AND IVERSON JERSEY” STRAIGHT GROUPIE SHIT. THIS IS RAP’S EQUIVALENT TO FAN FICTION.

    7. I really like the games music. I am a fan but it seems like lately he’s just trying to take shots at Eminem like everybody else to get recognized or to boost album sales. That’s a chicken shit move and he is not the first and won’t be the last. News flash man!!! Eminem is a better rapper and producer. Be the bigger man and accept it. But that being said I like he is taking shots at Kanye because (Yeezy) or whatever he named himself is as pathetic as his videos and should just fade away like his b******* music.

    8. Cancel culture done gone too far. First it started wit whole Dre, Em n Fif situation. Now dis. Fact is Documentary a classic. Prolly a Top 40 album. Rolling Stone trippin. Live hip-hop heads already reckonize.

    9. Rolling stone knows as much about hip-hop as my grandmother! They don’t represent the culture?!?! But he do need to chill with all this self promoting! Shit makes him look thirsty

    10. Speaking about beats then its a classic. But Game as a rapper is mediocre. Not original and nowhere like a Nas, Biggie, Rakim, Big L, Big Pun, G Rap etc. Hé is not creative or original and has a lamé personality.

    11. Dre 50 Focus Hi Tek all boy band engineered that album. Like Game had anything to do with that

    12. Amazing album, but somehow it’s disappointing to see Game typing like an idiot. Who the fuck hits the spacebar before a question mark?

    13. Whatever your thoughts are on dude, he’s not wrong on this occasion. Not that anyone should give a fuck about these lists, but when you see the panel of “experts” that compiled the top 200 rap albums it’s impossible to take it seriously. Go ahead and Google it, see who came up with this list.

      1. Nah. He is one hundred percent wrong. I’m an L.A. motherfucker. Dre with features from 50 can make anyone hot. My feelings, and the general concerns us is, without that shit he is mediocre to wack. His album sales and public attention reflect that. Dude stays taking Al’s and being lame. Not anywhere near top 200 of all time. Vince Staple’s new shit. Understand anything this idiot ever made. Hate it or love it.

    14. For once, The Game is spot on and should prob go harder at this corny list. Cardi B’s album more impactful?

    15. I doubt Mast Ace – Disposable Arts made it on that list… and let’s all be honest. That’s one of the better hiphop albums ever made. It’s better than eminems best. I’d say better than biggies. Really, it’s one of the best ever made, no disrespect to other great albums. If you haven’t listened to Disposable Arts, DO IT.

    16. Well, as much as I dislike Game as a person, Documentary is a classic, top 50 album id say. Rolling Stone is nothing but a propaganda outlet. And to be considered top anything good by them, they gotta like your politics. The music biz is all political, as is everything else. Everything revolves around politics.

    17. The guy is self important and delusional but considering the trash that was on that list he absolutely should have been in there.

    18. 30 tracks and 27 of them are going to be fillers, and the 3 good tracks are good because of the features and someone other than Game wrote the chorus. Dont get me wrong though, i like the game, but he hasn’t been good since 2008 or some shit. Like, sorry, but its the truth

    19. He’s right. He has multiple albums that should be on there. That list is a joke, and disrespected the whole west coast. Me Against the World 134, Death Certificate 93, Amerikkka’s Most Wanted 58, Straight Outta Compton 49, The Chronic 40, All Eyez on Me 29. WTF? Meanwhile Cardi’s album is 16…

    20. Of course I went straight to see who had the #1 album first but as soon as I saw lil Kim’s album before Jay-Z reasonable doubt, nas illmatic I stopped looking at the list cuz whoever made this list was definitely on drugs, the documentary should have been in the top 50 somewhere imo…

    21. The Documentary is a classic album. I know a lot of people don’t like game personally which is understanable. But his first album should have been in the top 100 or top 50 and honestly I would take at least 3 or 4 of his other albums over about 75 albums on that list. I’m not a fan of game going after Em I think it’s off balance. But Game is a monster on the mic for him not to make this list once is very weird, because honestly he should be on there more than once.

    22. Nah…i just feel like his lyrics don’t be energetic or motivating. That same raspy voice approach on every single song gets dead QUICKLY. He’s a decent wordsmith but his delivery and cadence is often boring and monotonous. He has to switch the pitch in his voice from time to time in order to intrigue the listener. As far as I’m concerned, his talent is mediocre at best. That’s real ?

    23. His signature raspy delivery on every single track gets dried out QUICKLY. He’s a decent wordsmith, yet his monotonous and uninspiring cadences lack versatility. Should take a page from Pac’s book, Scarface, and Daz and learn to implement different levels of intensity to his vocals. Otherwise each album will continue to sound identical to the previous one ?

    24. The Documentary is a classic, people don’t remember but after that album “Doctors advocate” was the most anticipated album in 2006 on a lot of list I remember. I was all G Unit vs The Game. People don’t remember that. I was always more a g unit fan, I bought he’s albums years later.

    25. I’ma have to side with the Game here, it should be in the top 200 for sure, where in the list is debatable. But looking at how Cardi B is above Illmatic definitely raises eyebrows not to mention no AZ- Doe or Fie

    26. Rolling Stone been invalid when it comes to hip hop. This is not news. If you want a better take go to the source or XXL. Don’t even acknowledge the bullshit troll media play. In tired of us giving relevance to this garbage.

    27. What is the beef for,GAME is a great rapper and Documentary is one of his greatest project. He has done so many more undisputed albums after Documentary.
