Snoop Dogg appeared on a recent episode of Drink Champs where he discussed a myriad of topics with co-hosts DJ EFN and N.O.R.E. Among them, the new owner of the Death Row Records brand explained why he decided to remove several Death Row releases from digital streaming platforms, a move that upset fans of the iconic West Coast rap label.
“First thing I did was snatch all the music off those platforms traditionally known to people, because those platforms don’t pay,” he said around the 1:51:00 mark. “And those platforms get millions of millions of streams, and nobody gets paid other than the record labels. So what I wanted to do is snatch my music off, create a platform similar to Amazon, Netflix, Hulu. It’ll be a Death Row app, and the music, in the meantime, will live in the metaverse.”
Snoop Dogg also touched on the death of his mother Beverly Tate, who passed away in October 2021. Just hours after Snoop revealed the life-altering news, he was on stage at Big Night Live in Boston where he’d already been scheduled to perform.
Rather than cancel the show, he told the audience, “I wasn’t even gonna come out here and perform tonight ’cause my mother passed away earlier tonight, but in the spirit of the people of Boston, I wanted to come out here and represent for y’all because this is what my mama would have wanted me to do.”
He echoed those sentiments in the Drink Champs interview, saying, “That’s what mama wanted me to do. To me, her transition made me better. Because now she’s up top watching over me, it’s no accident I wanted all these things that are happening right now because she’s pulling strings for me.”

Man they all rich AF already just give us the music back.
Snoop should ask Jay-Z about how that streaming platform exclusives works out in the end they will all be back for that dollar
Probably did which is why all the albums are still on Tidal
Yeah. Zero people duck with broke ass Tidal. LOL. I don’t know anyone that pays for that bullshit.
This is a terrible idea.
I’ve been clowned the longest for buying physical albums. Scenarios like this, as well as specific tracks not making stream services on albums makes me have zero regrets. I’ll always have my catalogs with no political bs preventing me from enjoying my purchases.
Bro I buy CD’s and DVD’s still to this day cos when the cyber terrorists strike and Netflix, YouTube and Spotify etc… are all things of the past ima still have my favourite movies and favourite albums to keep a fella entertained!!!
Sorry, don’t think the cyber terrorists are going to be worried about your favorite entertainment when they can hit the power grid so you can’t even watch or listen to that shit to begin with.
That Death Row app is a great idea. As label owner and artist you can control the money by acting as a distributor. Brillant.
Just like Jay-Z music their music will be lost to generations!! Like others said y’all already rich so why not leave it for the culture! So young heads can see why these artist are put into the class they’re in!!! It can’t always be about the money what about hip hop
Meanwhile I’ll private. 43 people are going to be willing to pay a deathrow subscription. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love death row but come’on Duke.
Death Row music is like ran through pussy. Nothing you can do with that.
So…he did it because he’s greedy as fuck…no surprise there
Good for Snoopm fuck all you broke ass bitches talking about culture. Want to hear this shit crisp and clean you can still buy the Vinyl or CD which is higher quality than streaming anyways. Only bums who don’t make art think it should all be for free.
SO much respect to Snoop for this decision. The music industry is being DETROYED by these streaming apps. At first, I thought it was a beautiful compromise for the artists and the world of downloading/free sharing of information. Until I realized that the artists arent getting paid SHIT for their music…and on top of that, nobody gets to keep the music theyre paying for, so if anything were to ever happen to where we didnt have access to the internet anymore for example, we’d all be lost for our music. We need to figure out a new system…I believe that these streaming apps were a great step in the long walk to finding the right compromise to where musicians can be properly paid again for their work, but we still have a long ways to go.
Zero respect for snoop dogg on this one. The music industry HAS BEEN DESTROYED by this. It’s a wrap. Physical copies no longer exist. It’s time for dinosaurs like yourself to understand that the money is in love shows and marketing/branding. Removing the music from Spotify makes it unaccessible to millions of potential fans. They’ll just not listen to and promote you for free, they’ll listen to someone else. No one is downloading his dumbass app.
look “nope” eventually you will have to defend that on the streets. real people make music and other people are getting paid from it. one day the people who make the music will confront those who make the money. then we will see how your logic holds up at the point of attack
cds still 500+M a year 1 million cds sold a week still big business and if i was an artist it would come out in cd format before online & Id shell out the 5 dollars a month a website costs and sell tracks direct but most artists want the fame id rather sel 10000 copies and keep 100% than 1 million and get a penny a stream or 1 dollar per sale
LOL. Snoop is completely stupid for this. He isn’t taking Tupac music anywhere. This is just going to make newer generations of hip hop heads wonder why they can’t hear the chronic when every other classic hip hop album is available instead. SMH. The answer is simple. Greed. Dumb ass Snoop. Give it to years end.
In his reply he stated streaming platforms and record make millions the artist gets nothing on most classic albums. So first your saying Snoop should let these streaming platforms make more money off his label so he can keep it 100 with hip hop fans. Boy it’s called Music Business not music chilling with my buddies. Also if he packages all of Death Row artist into one app. A major streaming platform. Or even multiple and have a bidding war. If he left them on the major platforms now they don’t want the other artist they want Dre, Tupac, Snoop, there’s plenty of other artist that could get streaming royalties. Snoop aint new to this
certain comments they don’t print. it’s not about black people getting paid or even creators receiving a fair share. the whole game is built on theft and misinformation. tell you to be patient waiting for pie in the sky they have heaven on earth today. dude who stole Little Richard’s music lived until 105 years old. Don’t be afraid to demand cash payments anywhere anytime don’t accept bully logic everything can change with the press of a button
Sheep have no brains: Anyone who thinks this is a dumb idea probably is a sheep. Its a no loose situation for Snoop, owning 100% off your profit is always better then owning 10% of your profit, these streaming services have been raping artist for years and counting. If you are an established artist with a fanbase why would you need a streaming service?? OWN EVERYTHING YOU CREATE AND CUT OUT THE MIDDLEMAN = SIMPLE MATH
If you want to hear the death row albums, go to Tidal. They are paying artist respectfully. Support the platforms that respect the artists, IT IS ONLY WRITE. The price is the same for me, and the artists I love get paid. SHOW ARTIST RESPECT.
I feel what Snoop is saying, they don’t pay the artist. But that’s the contract you signed, you guys do better on the front end or go independent. But for me, I’m just not paying for another service. I’ll just dig up my old CDs
I dont want to get off the subject but when Snoop didnt speak up for Dre when Game said what he said, showed me what he made of. A soft batch cookie. This the same dude that dissed Eazy E and he didnt know what was going on. He was suppose to sign with Ruthless Records through Above the Law. He jumps on one band wagon to the other. Game struggling to pay that thot 7 million but always bragging he rich. Then pay her off and stop looking for people to bail you out.
JDAFLAME music is the truth
Snoop you need to sign him. Lighty loved his music
