Rapsody Stresses The Importance Of Balance In Hip Hop Regarding Women

Rapsody was rocking her “Prince purple” Maison Margiela fit for the 2019 BET Awards on Sunday (June 23) when KXNG Crooked (or Crooked I) stopped the North Carolina-bred MC. During their brief conversation, Rapsody was asked about the 2019 XXL Freshman cover, which featured three women.

“There’s no movement without women in it [Hip Hop],” she said. “I remember a time where there were no females for a long time and then there was only one, so when I got to see the [XXL Freshman] cover and there were three — Tierra Whack, Megan Thee Stallion and Rico Nasty — who are all dope, all different, all themselves, like that’s dope and that’s what we need.

“We need way more of that. We need more more balance. We need more variety of women in Hip Hop to show that we come in all different styles, shapes, colors – we all got different flavors, different rhyme style, stories to tell — and you need that ’cause that’s how the world looks. The world doesn’t look in one way. It’s not one color. It’s not one universal image of a woman. It’s dope to have a wide range of women that reflects the world that we live in.”

From there, Crooked asked Rapsody what song made her fall in love with Hip Hop. And just like that, she was spitting Method Man’s verse from his classic duet with Mary J. Blige, 1995’s “I’ll Be There for You/You’re All I Need to Get By,” which Meth and Blige actually performed later that evening.

“Shout out to Method Man,” she added. “I told him that was the first song I memorized from front to back … that’s one of my favorite videos ever. That joint was hard!”

Rapsody’s 2017 debut, Laila’s Wisdom, ranked No. 4 on HipHopDX’s Best Female Rap Albums list. Check it out below.

    1. Get y’all asses in the game then….no ball player ever walked into the field being handed the ball……sick of bitches in 2019

        1. You mean aside from shit like genocide, global warming, poverty stricken communities, and people’s overall lack of concern and/or lack of education….

          Man, I’m honored

          1. You seem to fit in the lack of education category you mention. You cant compare a sport requiring physical ability and thousands of hours of practice and hard work to being successful in the music industry. Your point still stands.

            1. That’s not even an educational matter. It’s pure common sense.

              Nobody teaches talent

            2. Ok Trill, But There ARE Alot Of Talented Females Out There — Except NICKI. You Shouldn’t Diss Rapsody Like That.

          2. No, the fact you still refer to women as “bitches.” Always degrading the opposite sex probably because you’re so sick of being inferior. You are what’s wrong with the world, yes.

    2. She needs a hit record! Idc white or black, male or female, old or young, all you need is a hit record to start your ball rolling and even the boujee females I know don’t rock Rapsody..they talk more about hating The City Girls than liking her

    3. What we needs is less black women acting like hoes in the videos. Have a bit more respect for themselves and raise their game.
