Rap’s Elite Turns Out For Prodigy’s Funeral In NYC

Some headlines across the internet will point out that there was a fight at Prodigy’s funeral. That’s not a story. The Hip Hop legend’s final salute was much more ceremonious and communal than an isolated incident can take credit for.

Born Albert Johnson, the Mobb Deep MC passed away earlier this month due to sickle cell anemia — a condition he’s battled his entire life. He was 42-years-old.

On Thursday (June 29), thousands of mourners — including rap notables such as 50 Cent, Alchemist, LL Cool J, Ice-T, Raekwon, Anderson. Paak, Jadakiss, Remy Ma and Papoose, Statik Selektah, Maino, Fatman Scoop, Mic Geronimo and the Infamous Mobb — occupied the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home located at 1076 Madison Ave.

HipHopDX spoke with Thuy-An Julien, CEO of Hartman’s House, who tells us that mourners drove as far as five hours away just to pay their respects and share their favorite Prodigy memories with onlookers.

“At 5 p.m., the funeral shut the line but nobody got mad, everybody just dispersed; very respectful,” Julian said, adding that mood may have been somber, but still a “celebration” of Prodigy’s life, one that is forever immortalized in the music he left behind.

    1. Now everyone loves Prodigy all of a sudden? These were probably the same ones calling him a snitch because of the book he wrote. And probably the same ones who said he fell off because his rapping was so terrible, more so after King HOV killed him on wax. Now you all are crying? Fuck y’all. And where was broke ass Nas at? Oh yeah, he couldn’t afford to go to Ballerina P’s funeral. Back to playing 4:44, won’t hear y’all replying..

      1. Yeah Prodigy fucked up with his book, but he still left this world with a mark on the rap game. Facts. He inspired Nas back in the days with his rhymes about secret societies, books and chess play. And Nas inspired Jay-Z. Facts. Mobb Deep has three classics under their belt. And if you think Prodigy felt off, you definitely did not listen to the last album he dropped earlier this year called “Hegelian Dialectic” which is probably one of his best work. Facts.

To sum up in four words : shut the fuck up.

      2. You are misinformed, my friend. The real heads always had love for Prodigy and Mobb Deep. P’s book may have ruffled some feathers, but he didn’t hold back and knew the repercussions that were gonna come with it. His style did change on Infamy, but he still had his signature delivery and thug appeal. Plus, P got more wiser with time. Jay-Z may be a good businessman, but as a rapper, he’s not on Prodigy’s level.

      3. Jay z has to be one of the most overrated rappers in history. His music catalog is so overrated. Apart from Reasonable doubt and maybe blueprint the rest of is albums are from ok to mediocre. His albums can’t touch Infamous or Hell on Earth. Also Illmatic blows anything Jay z has done even Reasonable doubt. Also Biggie as a rapper was better, but as soon he got shot and died, Jay thought he was king of New York the fact is he was never was, just a mythical title which fanboys and girls put on him.

    2. Iz only a hanfull of muffuccas i rezpekkt frum da Least Coast. Prodigy wuz one o dem doe. Rip. Tite flizzow tite bizzars tite style doe. FUCC GAY Z FUCC SIMPnas FUCC SCRUFFY and FUCC FEMINEM real spit doe.

      1. Trying to ready this shit just gave me Forrest Whitaker eye for real. this has the be the most retarded ass shit i ever did read lol

      2. Jay-Z and Prodigy weren’t friends or do you have a two minute memory? And Eminem didn’t have any kind of relationship with the man so why would he be expected at the funeral? Maybe engage one or two brain cells before headbutting your keyboard and posting whatever appears on screen.

      1. I was just informed that he had shows overseas, so he wasn’t able to attend the funeral unfortunately.

    3. P is finally laid to rest. No more worries, just eternal, peaceful resting. My only question is where was Nas at? They may have had a little dispute, but Nas and P/Mobb Deep made classic tracks together. Kinda suspect that he wasn’t there, or maybe he was there and DX didn’t list him along with the others. Whatever the case though, it’s M-O-B-B forever.

      1. based on NAS instagram, he apologized not coming to the funeral because currently got shows in europe (he posted pics from the stage too, so it’s not lie). he wrote several posts about P.

      1. I dont believe this dude was being disrespectful bro I think he’s attempting to bring awareness to the possibility of P being killed. #ThinkOutsideTheBOX #OneLove

    4. Rest in peace to Don Bandana P. Love that guy & Fuck outta here with that Least Coast shit. East Coast reppin the streets most. Who want beef ? turn your peeps into Meat Loaf.

    5. Mobb Deeps music is legendary along with HNIC from Prodigy. When east cost hiphop was quite and Pac Snoop n Dre were killin shit Mobb Deep was the only group to rep the east. No Jay-Z responding to Snoop kicking down buildings in NYC in his video. Mobb Deep fired back. Not Jay-Z, Mobb Deep. Remember that. The Bet awards that year Mobb Deep didnt fly to LA they took the train. They took the train to bring there guns just in case things got a little hairy. Not Jay-Z. Mobb Deep held NYC down at that time when no one else did. And Prodigy was front and center. r.i.P
