President Obama took part in a very brief beatboxing session while in Vietnam.
President Obama’s beatboxing skills were on brief display, during a town hall in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, earlier this week. During the town hall, the president was asked a question on the importance of a nation supporting the arts, by Suboi, a woman known as the Queen of Hip Hop in Vietnam.
Before answering Suboi’s question, Obama asked if she could drop a verse, and even offered his beatboxing skills.
“Why don’t you give me a little rap…Do you need a beat,” President Obama asked.
Suboi then dropped a few bars in Vietnamese, and offered this description of her rap:
“I was just talking about some people having a lot of money. Having big houses. But actually, are they really happy? So, a lot of things that people look at us and see different things, they assume or a lot of stereotypes. Like me, an Asian rapper…For Vietnamese people, it’s different. They think rapping is not for women.”
President Obama explained that sexism is also present in the United States, and later spoke on the importance of the arts.
“But that’s true in the United States,” the president said. “I just mean that there’s always been sort of sexism and gender stereotypes in the music industry like every other part of life. But to answer your question, the arts are important. Artistic expression is important…Those are the things that inspire people.”
