OG Maco has reportedly passed away at the age of 32, weeks after an apparent suicide attempt.
TMZ reports that the Atlanta rapper, best known for the 2014 hit “U Guessed It,” died in hospital on Thursday (December 26).

Maco (real name Benedict Ihesiba Jr.) had been in hospital since December 12 after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. The shooting was believed to have been self-inflicted.
According to TMZ, the rapper fell into a coma while in hospital and his conditioned worsened, rendering him unable to be revived.

Doctors had apparently been struggling to conduct a proper brain scan on Maco in an attempt to flush out the toxins in his system.
He passed away surrounded by his family in the Los Angeles hospital.

OG Maco’s tragic passing comes shortly after his family issued an update on his health, revealing that he was in “critical but stable condition” and that they were hopeful he would make a full recovery.
“We want to inform OG Maco’s fans, friends and supporters that he is currently in critical but stable condition. He is receiving the best possible care and we are staying hopeful as he continues to fight,” they wrote on Instagram.

The statement continued: “Please note, all official updates regarding OG Maco’s health will come directly from his official social media accounts. This will be the only source for valid information.

His family have yet to publicly comment on his passing.
Maco cracked the Billboard Hot 100 with the aforementioned “U Guessed It,” which spawned a remix featuring 2 Chainz, and was one of the first wave of artists signed to Quality Control Music, the powerhouse Southern rap label behind Lil Baby, Migos and Lil Yachty, among others.

He also earned a spot in XXL‘s 2015 Freshman class alongside the likes of Vince Staples, Fetty Wap and DeJ Loaf.
Maco went on to release one studio album, as well as several mixtapes and EPs, but his career was derailed by a number of health issues, including a near-fatal car accident that left him with several broken bones and vision problems.

He was also diagnosed with the flesh-eating disease necrotizing fasciitis, which disfigured much of the skin on his face.
