On the track, Nipsey contributes to the hook which features lyrics such as: “I caught a lot of cases/ Took me a lot of time/ But I built a foundation.”
“[It was] something that we worked on in 2018,” Stone explained of the song in a recent interview with Bootleg Kev. “We just spiced up the beat just a little bit ’cause it’s 2023 now, so we made it make sense.”

J. Stone is signed to Nipsey Hussle’s label All Money In and the two collaborated on numerous songs such as “All Get Right” and “Stay Loyal” before the Crenshaw native was murdered in 2019.
“Foundation” most notably features both Nipsey and producer Hit-Boy, who won a Grammy together in 2020 for their work on the hit single “Racks In the Middle.”

Nipsey was killed before he could receive the award, which was his first Grammy win. At the ceremony, the award was accepted by his partner at the time of his death, Lauren London, as well as his family.
During the acceptance speech, London said: “Nip did it not just for the awards, but for the people. God allowed him to use this music to speak his truth, give his wisdom and something we will forever be able to live with.”

Nipsey’s grandmother also offered some brief remarks and said she “wanted to thank all of you for showing all the love that I have felt for him all of his life, and will always live in my heart”.
The Grammys ceremony also featured a tribute performance to the late rapper, with Roddy Ricch, YG, John Legend, Meek Mill, DJ Khaled, and Kirk Franklin appearing.
Nipsey Hussle also inspired J. Stone’s ascent in Hip Hop through his The Definition series, which began in 2019. The Definition of Success marks the fourth and final installment.
“Everyone has their own definition of success, and if I were to give my definition, it would simply be me,” Stone says of the album in a press release.

“I was literally the black sheep of my family. From foster homes to juvenile halls to county jail, everyone counted me out. Now, however, everyone has to respectfully count me in. This is more than an album. This is my story. It’s showtime and I’m proud of me.”
