NBA YoungBoy Associate Reportedly Arrested For 2017 Murder Of Gee Money

The Baton Rouge Police Department has reportedly arrested an associate of NBA YoungBoy, who they believe is responsible for the 2017 murder of fellow rapper Gee Money.

Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. L’Jean McKneely Jr. told The Advocate 24-year-old Deandre Demarcus Fields was taken into custody on Friday (June 7) on one count of second-degree murder.

The arrest comes nearly two years after Gee Money — real name Garrett Burton — was found dead in a parking lot outside his music studio on Dallas Drive in September 2017.

The bad blood between YoungBoy’s camp and Gee Money allegedly started to boil after Gee released “a song that contained derogatory lyrics” about YoungBoy’s sister. Consequently, YoungBoy responded with a social media post and things escalated from there.

“In the days prior to Burton’s death, both Burton and Gaulden made several social media posts about one another, which further exacerbated tensions between the two rival rap music groups,” detectives wrote in the warrant. “When Burton was killed, members of the NBA group were immediately developed as suspects due to … the ongoing rap music feud.”

Police questioned Fields three days after Gee Money’s September 13 death. During the interview, he told investigators he instructed his mother to flee their home because he “feared retaliation.” He said he left Baton Rouge with his mother and son.

The warrant says he also told detectives he drove to Hammond “to get gas” on the night of the shooting, although Fields’ phone records proved otherwise. He, in fact, wasn’t in Hammond the night of Gee Money’s death — he was still in Baton Rouge.

A month after the incident, detectives discovered shell casings on Jefferson Avenue that matched those gathered at the scene of Gee Money’s death.

Authorities think Fields “arranged to rid himself of the firearm that killed him” by giving it to another group of people who live nearby.” His phone records indicate he called members of that group in the hours after the shooting.

Fields’ bond is currently set at $500,000. He remains in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
