MC Hammer & Irv Gotti Blast VH1’s “The Breaks”

VH1 premiered its made-for-TV movie The Breaks yesterday (January 4).

The film stars Mack Wilds and portrays the New York Rap scene in 1990.

MC Hammer, whose song “U Can’t Touch This” was released that year, took to Twitter to laugh at the film’s depiction of the era.

“them cowards still hurt 30 yrs late I made better videos, put on better shows sold more records that’s #TheBreaks” the Oakland, California rapper writes.

Irv Gotti questioned the film’s authenticity as well. The Queens, New York producer and executive says that the movie does not give proper credit to the borough. Nas, Mobb Deep, LL Cool J, A Tribe Called Quest, Noreaga and 50 Cent also hail from Queens.

“Watching this Breaks Shit on Vh1,” he writes in the caption for a map of the five boroughs. “1st off I didn’t like the commercials they was running playing the Bridge is Over and the part where KRS says Queens Keeps on Faking it!! So now when I’m watching this watered down bullshit which is pissing me off cause they are not portraying Hip Hop Culture accurately!! But they still making my Borough look soft. Let me tell y’all something. I’m from that Purple Part in the pic I posted. And listen. Ain’t nothing weak or soft about QB. And not only that @Vh1. QB has produced more superstar Rappers in hip hop than any other borough or place in the world for that matter. Shit looks like someone who doesn’t know shit about our culture made this shit. And usually I would have kept quiet. But after the commercial and me watching this bullshit shit on my Borough. I had to post something. And to all my Hip Hop Culture people out there. That wants to see REAL depiction of OUR CULTURE. Sit tight. I’m on my way!! And I’m not a hater. At all. None of that is in my DNA. I love to see niggas win. But your not gonna disrespect QB. #queensgetthemoney #murderinctvseries Making Hip Hop look fucking Lame man. #gotmepissed #visionaryideas#wecomingmotherfuckers”

      1. Who said anything about his music? Ask any respected artist from that era ahuhbout Hammer and they are going to give him mad props. Hammer did his thing and nobody can say shit about it. I can think of way more shit that is garbage today. Hammer had flow. He could dance his ass off. He put on kick ass live shows. 90% of artists today wish they had half of his talent.

    1. Talkin about fake?? Bruh NY has had and still have the most hardest, and organized crime groups in the country . Fuk wat ppl heard.

    2. Honestly, I thought this movie sucked. firstly, it didnt feel like 1990, it felt like a movie from the 00’s, being portrayed by 2015 actors. And I feel like the acting felt too 2015, it just overall felt too modern.

    3. Again, misinformation given in an article. The map IRV posted was of QUEENS only, NOT the 5 boroughs. If you go to New York, you would understand that each borough has neighborhoods. That map couldn’t possibly break down all the neighborhoods in all give boroughs.

    4. I must say that I kind of agree that the film didn’t do Hip Hop as much justice as I would have liked. The star lady Nikki appeared to be a person willing to lie and backstab ant any cost to advance In the business. While her boyfriend appeared to be noble and honorable. The music they chose was good. definitely bought back that good old feeling. just the script had me disappointed

    5. Yo Hammer, are you still shocked and amazed that the vast majority of hip-hop fans and artists on both coasts weren’t feeling you or Vanilla Ice back in the 90s?

Wake up and smell the coffee.
