Max B’s conviction will be the subject of season four of Gimlet’s Conviction Spotify podcast anthology series.
Spotify released the trailer for The Conviction of Max B on Wednesday (January 11), with host Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins narrating the synopsis. The five-episode series will focus on the fateful night in 2006 when Max B allegedly plotted a robbery that went wrong and ended in a kidnapping and murder.
Jenkins will also take listeners behind the trial that landed the rapper an initial 75-year prison sentence.
“This is the story of a rapper who risked it all for a bag full of money, a robbery where everything went wrong, a messy trial, and a sentence that makes you question who the justice system works for, and who it works against,” a press release states.
The Conviction of Max B will arrive on January 17, with all five episodes being immediately available to stream.
In 2009, Max B was sentenced to 75 years behind bars for his alleged involvement in an armed robbery gone wrong. He was charged with conspiracy related to armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault and felony murder.
The Harlem-born rapper is alleged to have plotted to rob two men with his stepbrother, Kelvin Leerdam, and ex-girlfriend, Gina Conway, at a Holiday Inn in New Jersey in September 2006. The botched robbery resulted in one of the men being shot dead.
Max had his sentence substantially reduced to 20 years in 2016 after taking a plea deal, before announcing three years later that it had been further cut to 12 years.
Earlier this week, French Montana relayed a message from Max B on Twitter stating he is set to be released in April 2023.
“MY BROTHER WAS FACING 75 YEARS .. HE TOLD ME TO TELL YALL HE’LL BE HOME IN APRIL!!” French wrote while sharing Max’s new music video for “Lemonade,” he wrote. “SILVER SURFER Live from the can [wave emoji] Free the Count [100 emoji] ‘LEMONADE’ VIDEO .. Coke Boys 6 OUT NOW ON ALL PLATFORMS.”
French’s tweet was accompanied by Max B’s music video for “Lemonade” — off French and DJ Drama’s Coke Boys 6 mixtape — which opens with footage of him addressing the Coke Boys capo and the rest of his fans via a prison phone call.
“It’s Max Biggavel. French, what’s good, my n-gga? I’m coming, baby. I’m on they ass,” he said. “Boy looking good, I’m working, got the weight off of me, the weight is up. It’s ‘Lemonade,’ baby, it’s the video. Get ready for it. French Monbega, owww! I love you, beloved. You killin’ them out here.”
