Lil Wayne has replaced Kendrick Lamar as having the top rap album on Billboard’s Hip Hop Albums chart.
Tha Carter VI may have failed to land the top spot on the Billboard 200, being kept to number two by country star Morgan Wallen but it is now the number one rap album in the US.
Kendrick Lamar’s GNX had been the number one rap album for the prior seven weeks but Wayne’s first week album sales are enough to send him over the Compton superstar.
It is only the ninth week of the entire year where GNX has not been the number one rap album.
In its first week on sale, Tha Carter VI sold 108,000 equivalent units.
In comparison, Wayne’s last solo album, Funeral, debuted at number one and sold 139,000 equivalent units in its first week of release.
It is also a significant drop off from Tha Carter V‘s opening week sales of 480,000 in 2018.
The album also garnered the lowest debut week sales for any entries in Tha Carter series as well as Wayne’s entire near 30 year career.
Tha Carter VI was perhaps most notable for its eclectic features which includes U2 lead singer, Bono.
The two link up on the anthemic “The Days” which was previously debuted during a promo for the NBA Finals.
On the track, Wayne references his status as an elder statesman in Hip Hop, rapping: “I ain’t getting younger, but I’m getting better / No time to waste that’s another man’s treasure / They say every dog has hit day.”
While Bono, who has previously worked with Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West, sings: “The time of our lives / The time of our youth / We bow down to beauty and truth / These are the days.”
The 19 track project features an array of guest artists including 2 Chainz, Kodak Black, Machine Gun Kelly and Big Sean.
Tha Carter VI also features more eclectic artists such as opera singer Andrea Bocelli, country star Jelly Roll and Fugees legend Wyclef Jean.
The album has also received largely negative reviews from both fans and critics with the project appearing to fail to live up to expectations.
This website just loves to recycle article paragraphs for old news. I swear I’ve read the same sentences word for word about the “eclectic” features. Lazy shit.
But yay Wayne.
Proof that the album doesn’t have to be good or for a particular audience to go #1. But Wayne needs the money, so good for him.
I’m a big lil Wayne fan but I couldn’t get past the first 2 songs then I put it on shuffle and still found myself skipping songs. Maybe over time it will grew on me but I’m sorry I’m still stuck on the first 3 carter albums and 500 degreez which still slaps to this day. Love you Wayne 😚

Carter VI came out a week ago. GNX was released 7 months ago. Obviously, there’s less hype for Kendrick’s album, which dominated the top of the charts for two quarters. So, Carter VI isn’t achieving some big accomplishment. It’s just benefiting from a much more recent release, which gives it a strong ranking in the charts.
Your clearly full of it. Kendrick started the mid beef with drake so he could help his weak album sales. And gnx still sold less than to pimp a butterfly and drake has old sold k dot for 15 years # dealwithit
I am a bit confused. How did the beef help with Kendrick’s GNX sales? The beef occurred a full seven months before his album dropped. What is Kendrick, clairvoyant? Are you comparing TPAB total sales with GNX total sales? TPAB was released almost 10 years ago, so it would stand a reason that it would have higher sales.
Wayne is King but it upsets the kbots. kbots not real fans just burb dorks. However have to admit album was not great.
Most overrated and overappreciated mumbling cokehead of all time. I will never understand.
