Lefty Gunplay, the Los Angeles rapper who rocketed to prominence with his appearance on Kendrick Lamar‘s GNX fan favorite “TV Off,” has been arrested in El Paso, Texas on charges including possession of a controlled substance.
According to El Paso jail records, the rapper was booked on Monday (February 24) on three charges: not wearing a seat belt, possessing a prohibited item in a correctional facility and possession of a controlled substance.
For the last of those charges, Lefty is accused of having four grams or more, but less than 200 grams, of the as-yet-unnamed substance. Under Texas law, that charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000 if the person is convicted.
The rapper posted bond for just over $35,000 and was released on the same day he was booked.
Lefty Gunplay was in El Paso to host a party and give a “limited” performance at Friends Sports Bar & Kitchen.
He ended up missing the show, and spoke to local radio host Patti Diaz about what happened.
“Later on, I’ll get into further details on what really happened, but if you know, you know,” he said.
“I feel like I gotta make it up to my El Paso fans. I know I got a lot of fans in Texas. Things didn’t work out the way they were supposed to, but at the end of the day, everything happens for a reason. I love Texas… Hopefully we can make it right.”
Late last year, Lefty Gunplay made headlines when he indicated that Kendrick Lamar was set to drop a deluxe version of his surprise album GNX.
Sitting down for a chat with Bootleg Kev to discuss working with Kendrick on “TV Off,” the West Coast rapper seemed to confirm that the “Not Like Us” star still has some tricks up his sleeve.
Kev asked Gunplay if he had any contributions cut from the album, to which he replied: “He has some stuff. We did two, three songs. He has some stuff in the chamber. He told me that we’re going to work again, for sure.”
He later added: “I know he’s got a deluxe version coming out. He’s very secretive.”
As of this writing, no deluxe version of GNX has been released.
