While the induction of N.W.A to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame over the weekend hasn’t pleased everyone, most notably Kiss frontman Gene Simmons, that hasn’t prevented the culture from celebrating the triumphant milestone.
In honor of N.W.A’s latest achievement, King T, formerly known as King Tee, spoke with Billboard shortly after the induction ceremony to reveal his Top 5 favorite cuts from the illustrious Compton Rap quintet, offering a few words of reasoning for his picks.
5. “Dopeman”
“Gave the point of view of the drug dealer and the drug user. The samples were everything. Groundbreaking.”
4. “Gangsta Gangsta”
“Showed [Ice Cube]’s lyrical content and painted the picture of a typical day in the hood.”
3. “100 Miles And Runnin’”
“When I heard it at that time I felt like running. Really got to hear how lyrical the group was.”
2. “Boyz-n-the-Hood”
“Because it was one-of-a-kind, unique and told a whole story.”
1. “Fuck Tha Police”
“One of the most thought-provoking rap songs made.”
Last month, King T was named on HipHopDX’s list of 10 Rappers We Need To Show More Appreciation.
“While King Tee’s flow and cadence were always more akin to the formidable New York stars of the day, Act a Fool’s truly timeless opening line (‘It’s Friday night on the streets of L.A….’) and its countless West Coast rap tropes made the album is undeniable Cali classic,” the piece says. “He cemented his rep as a L.A. Hip Hop pioneer with the equally inspired follow-up, At Your Own Risk.”

@Uptown Mike Not Me. I’ve always loved Niggaz4life more. The production is out of this world and it doesn’t sound dated like most of Straight Outta Compton does.
