Kendrick Lamar’s impressive acting debut on the STARZ series Power took some time to cultivate before it came to fruition. According to Kung Fu Kenny, it was something he, 50 Cent and Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith discussed for years.
In an interview for Variety, Power creator and showrunner Courtney A. Kemp asked Lamar what made him ask 50 to be on the show.
“I’ve always been a fan of the show,” the Grammy winner told Kemp. “Me, 50 and Top always communicate like, man, we got to do something one day and make something right. It’s been a process for like, I want to say four years. It’s been a while. It’s just timing about everything.”
Kemp also revealed it was important to K. Dot that he not be cast as a drug dealer. So, the role of a crackhead named Laces was created — even though the Power creative team wasn’t looking for a guest star.

AmeriKKKa loves seeing black people play the worst. Sadly, you knee grows eat it up. Acting was atrocious.
Had you listened to Kendrick interview he said he wanted that role so nobody is making nobody look bad
And just like THAT, King Kunta got his Screen Actors Guild card. Good for him. Pretty soon, they’ll make an episode where Pusha T plays a drug dealer. Push been pretending to be a dealer his entire life so he’s a logical choice. Plus, he’s broke from paying that OVO invoice…
drake is still shitting though
God, even when the article has nothing to do with Pusha or Drake, you still have the need to mention them. Are you on their dicks that much? Disgusting.
Even a mediocre actor can make a bad show look good.
What a miserable loser you must be lol
Kendrick Lamar is one of the best rappers alive. That role was an insult and he should have respectfully declined.
He went to them and asked for a part
Kendrick created that character and cultivated the role over several years, he’s been wanting to act for a while now. Power allowed him to bring the role to fruition.
Let’s be real.. that wasn’t some scene stealing award winning performace. He acted a role. That’s that, it just being overblown because its Lamar. But the performance dont even deserve that much press sorry
H8 Much?
He killed that role. He was funny, spoke good Spanish, did the friggin toostie roll, and had a VERY serious moment wit Kanan (not 50) at the end of his part. Well done Kendrick.
