Kanye West Raises $1M For DMX’s Family With Balenciaga Tribute Shirts

DMX was laid to rest over the weekend with not one but two different services. For Saturday’s (April 24) Celebration of Life, Kanye West brought his Sunday Service choir to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn where they sang their hearts out for the fallen Ruff Ryders legend.

But that’s not the only thing Kanye contributed. According to TMZ, his DMX t-shirt collaboration with Balenciaga netted roughly $1 million for the Simmons family. Listed at $200, the custom shirts sold out in less than 24 hours.

Swizz Beatz, who previously hinted at Kanye’s involvement in the memorial, posted the shirts to his Instagram account on Saturday.

“Thank you my brother KANYE & @balenciaga for this amazing tribute link in BIO,” he wrote in the caption. “long live the DOG.”

Kanye West recruited renowned visual artist Akeem Smith to help with the stage layout for DMX’s Celebration of Life, which featured what looked liked two giant pyramids. Kanye and DMX were reportedly close and although Ye wasn’t seen publicly, sources say the Chicago-bred Hip Hop mogul was present during the Barclays Center memorial but “maintained a low profile.”

DMX passed away at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York on April 9 after suffering a catastrophic heart attack. According to Murder Inc. founder Irv Gotti, he was sold a bad batch of crack-cocaine laced with fentanyl.

“They said it was a bad dose of crack and they said some drug Fentanyl was mixed in with the crack and that’s what made him overdose,” he said in a now-deleted video interview with 107.5 WGCI in Chicago. “When when he got to the hospital, he got diagnosed with COVID and he couldn’t breathe — you know that COVID messes with your respiratory system — so that’s why he had to get hooked up to the ventilator. But they said before he did, they was, ‘His brain died.’”

A second service was held on Sunday (April 25) at a local church but was closed to the public.

    1. “covid messes with your respiratory system..” – You know what else messes with your respiratory system? Opioids. Shallow breathing and all that make people die in their sleep if they have sleep apnea for example and stuff like that.

    2. Oh so kanye was such a good friend.. how many beats did he make for DMX again? Did they feature on each other albums? Nope.

      1. Just one song on Grand Champ, but who knows if they did any work that didn’t end up any albums. I agree with you about them being friends, you never hear their names together in the same sentence

      2. What did you donate?
Who cares who you donate to if your friends or not. If you have the money u can do that. This was for D kids not you. So just stop talking… bitter one!

      3. You can show your respects to some who’s passed…No need to be friends, family, etc. It’s could just being a good human with a good heart. Kanye’s intentions are good. No need to stir up drama or project negativity into DMX’s passing. The world needs more good than anything especially these days ????????

    3. Don’t like Kanye or Balenciaga but pretty dope that they can raise 1 milli just like that. They should get involved in more philanthropical work.

    4. You don’t have to be friends with an artist to respect their works and hustle. Kanye was asked to be a part of DMX’s funeral services, he could’ve stopped there, but he found a way to raise money for the family. It’s absolutely nothing wrong with that…

    5. shirt looks wack, who would buy this? and why is it $200? and why didn’t Khanye dig into that aircraft hanger full of money and just give the family cash if he wants to be a hero? rip X

      1. $200 for a t-shirt is ridiculous. Just as overpriced as his ugly sneakers. But at least if was for a good cause. I hope he didn’t profit off this and all the money went to the family.

        1. Balenciaga is not cheap nor is it ridiculous. Just watch these shirts go 1000+. As for Yeezys – Kanye just reduced the price for 700v1s from 300 to 240. Name another brand that would do such thing.

        2. The article clearly states the $1 million dollars raised from the shirt sales will go to the Simmons family…DMX’s family ? Kanye’s a real one in my book. I like the dude. Kanye is Kanye ?

    6. I find it funny that people are forgetting that Balenciaga does not sell anything for $200 but bracelets second of all it was a dedication to the man’s family so he can get paid from it they needed a big time Superstar name that’s into designing behind it this shirt sold poor people mad who know that they can go to a Chinese store and get the shirt printed out for $7 and go to pookie’s funeral except this not pookie funeral this is DMX families funding because he passed away he was the head of the household and Kanye knew that thank you I appreciate you hate me later
