Kanye West, 9th Wonder & Talib Kweli React To Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp A Butterfly”

Kanye West says that he was listening to Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly while working today (March 16).

Finally back in the studio… starting my day by listening to Kendrick’s new album!!!  Thank you for the music and messaging!!!” West wrote on Twitter.

The Chicago rapper-producer’s longtime collaborator Talib Kweli also praised the Compton, California rapper’s second major label debut album.

“Fans of great music would like to thank @kendricklamar for featuring great artists like @rapsodymusic & @Bilal on this album,” Kweli tweeted yesterday (March 15).

Rapsody, who appears on the collection’s “Complexion (A Zulu Love),” referenced some of the lyrics from the album in her post.

When shit hit the fan, is U still a fan? Show and prove. King Kendrick. Buy multiples. Itunes. Google play. All dat,” she wrote.

The tweets from West, Kweli and Rapsody, as well as tweets from 9th Wonder and Flying Lotus, are as follows:

    1. West Coast Los Angeles at its finest and purist. The Next best lyricist (Ice T, CUbe, Chuck D, Nas, Pac, EM, now K.Dot)!

      1. lol He’s not lyrical at all. Just because he raps fast and does funny voices doesn’t mean his lyrics are good. I can tell you’re white too, so your opinion is invalid stfu

      2. ^^You should open your ears and listen to more of Kendrick’s music. To say that he’s not lyrical is blasphemy.

      3. I need to relisten to the album, as far as i’ve heard. His ego took over the album, I prefer Good kid Mad City.. Swimming pools was aight. But he aint no Tupac, nor eminem. He’s another artist trying to establish his own style that hes been given freedom to do as he pleases. Idk. 50/50 lyrics were weak, and difficult to understand him at times.2.5/5

      4. haha @ Hood King, I’m guessing 2chainz or Kid Ink is Lyrical to you? I’m black and from the West Coast. Old School. Just for your name Hood King, explains why you can’t mess with Kendrick. Because most of the ignorant facts that he speaks, you probably do. This album is Raw, Factual and should open the eyes of a lot of young blacks. Can’t ask for respect from the outside if theres none from within. But you a Hood Nigga right.. Stay loyal to that brand and you wont make it to see a long life. Go read a book brah .. DUMB FUCK.. Your comment was BOO BOO lol

      5. More like pretentious. Just because kendrick says mumbo jumbo and uses jazz doesn’t change the fact that kendrick has very little to say.

      6. ‘mumbo jumbo’ LOL you’re ignorant & close minded, so therefore your opinions are invalid. GTFO

      7. its always funny online when black ppl see a comment they consider wack they say u must be white lmao foh. half the tiem its black ppl pretending to be white

      8. Hood King is a troll. One anonymous loser like him doesn’t matter when half of the music industry supports Kendrick.

    2. I got in contact with all of them after they posted those tweets, and they all have said Kendrick’s new album was horrible and Drake’s new album is fantastic. They only posted those tweets so Kendrick could pay them.

      1. Please. Nobody believes your lies You didn’t contact anyone. You’re just mad because these people love Kendrick’s new album and said it was dope. You can’t fool anyone.

      2. Drake put work on that album, Honestly like it more then Kendricks. But Rittz is underrated. He’s got the flow and story telling of his life that is true to rap roots. Sure he’s white but Valiant can spit, never heard a verse i didnt like.

      3. Yeah, I prefer Drake’s album too. There have been a lot of good releases this year, Joey, Lupe, Fashawn, Cvhi’s albums are all better than Kendrick’s. I’m a big Kendrick fan but this album is a total let down.

      4. Gotta cosign OVO. Kendrick should be shining drake’s shoes. because without him, kendrick would never have a lasting career.

      5. Frank White, R3L, OVO, and Dan are the same troll teethboy making up lies. Drake’s album sucks and those other people named did not have better albums than Kendrick. Kendrick shouldn’t be shining anyone’s shoes as his career already got this far without Aubrey,

    3. how you in the studio listening to another niggas album, whats the point>? isnt you supposed to be making your own album in there?

      1. Spoken like a crab in the bucket! You sound like one of them corny rappers that says “I only listen to my music”… smh!

      2. you should already be inspired and ready to go when you hop in the studio, not sitting around eating doritos tweeting about the new kendrick album

      1. Not at all, but he’s helping keep that spectrum alive and he’s part of that small group of new generation rappers that cares about content in their music.

      2. You Name Me Another Rapper, Young Rapper In This Era That’s Has The Exposure Like KDot And Speaks For Blacks As He Does ?? Lupe was a lil on it but then he went left.. Joey Badass is too nice but people besides real hip hop heads gives him the credit he deserves.. drake and weezy running this game.. Wack ass artist like Rich Gang, Future and Rappers with Catchy beats are running Hip HOP .. White Rappers has taken the front seat.. J cole Speaks it. Ill give you that. But its not as raw or as uncut about street Gang Banging Shit like K dots.. HE is hip hop in my eyes.. Him, RApsody, Joey Badass, Ab soul, and Cole.. Keeping hip hop heart beating ..

      3. ^ You gotta point as far as commercially visible rappers. I think the key for people that enjoy this album or J Coles is to look at the lesser known artists that have been dropping quality stuff for awhile. You got Blu, Fashawn, Homeboy Sandman, Mick Jenkins and even Og Maco outside of his hype tracks. There’s many other new mcs out there with the quality content but you just gotta dig a little… YouTube makes it pretty easy to find em with the suggested videos. Mellow Music group is another good label to look at.

      4. There are plenty of amazing conscious rappers but if you don’t have a wide audience it is not going have the same impact. The reason why artist like Kendrick are praised so much for albums like this is because in the mainstream right now social conscious albums are not pushed much, especially one that is so pro-black and honest like this one. And like it or not Kendrick is one of the few rap artist in this generation that went platinum. Do album sales= talent, no, but they do show that you are being heard by many, and if music like this can reach the ears of millions that’s amazing. Unfortunately no matter how amazing artist like Mick Jenkins are, if the masses aren’t listening his music won’t make as big as an impact as an artist as popular as Kendrick. Plus this album would be amazing even if consciousness was mainstream, because it’s amazing music, period.

With that being said I hope we can all work together to help other amazing artist like Mic Jenkins, Blu, Elzi, etc. to the forefront of hiphop by supporting their music to help more and more get in tuned.

    4. kanye was so inspired he decided to put out a music video and post a bunch of naked kim k pics to try and take some of kendricks shine

    5. I like Kendrick’s new effort but I can see how GKMC fans wouldn’t really appreciate his new offering. It’s not for everyone. But it’s still nice tho!

    6. Apparently if your album doesn’t contain any club bangers or trap beats it’s garbage. Glad to see Kendrick getting recognition from REAL artists.

Drake’s album was him acting like he’s something he’s not spitting elementary lyrics. Dude is soft as baby shit covered in kitten fur.

    7. I’m on my 2nd listen. Anyone who says there’s no replay value is straight buggin. I already have 3 songs I want to listen to on repeat. Anyone who says there’s nothing on here for radio is buggin. “These Walls” and “Alright” can go on the radio without question. If you said his album was wack, weak, or that Lupe’s album was better really don’t know HOW to listen to music. And I’ve been an avid Lupe fan for a long time. Since 2007 at least. You people really need to LISTEN. This is MUSIC. So much more than any genre.

    8. he has individual songs killin good kid on here facts!!! hood politics, how much a dollar cost and momma its better than anything on good kid whole cd has dope vibe!!!! kendrick came wit it but the documentary 2 will be better !!!!!

    9. Pretty much Kdot has the 2 most cohesive albums since MBDTF and WTT. Anybody who says he isn’t lyrical is dumb as fuck. The pure artistry on this album is only second to maybe Kanye. He will be top 10 when its all said and done and the undisputed leader of the new school when it comes to making an album… End of story

    10. I love the idiots, who look at this album with a narrow mind. I agree its not hardcore, i agree they arent bangers, but when has Kendrick ever been that way? Kendrick and Lupe in my opinion are very similar. Lyrically dangerous, educated artists that like to play outside the box of this new day and age of hip hop.

The jazz, the soul, the funk, the hip hop feel to this album bring me back to 1998 with Outkast and their Aquemini album. Usage of George Clinton may have put me to this way, however, there are a few tracks i have a tough time listening thru due to the production. Lastly, this album is impressive

    11. If you’re a fan of GKMC, then won’t like this album; most of you hopped on that bandwagon when GKMC came out. If you’re a long time Kendrick fan, dating back to Section 80 and Overly Dedicated, then you’re gonna love this album.
